Monday’s hearing of the House Intelligence Committee was proof positive of the absolute need for both a special prosecutor and an independent, bipartisan commission with subpoena power to conduct a full investigation of the Trump campaign’s connections with Russian intelligence — as well as Russia’s multipronged attack on our elections and Trump’s business connections with that country’s oligarchs.

And it’s proof more than ever that even if we get that prosecutor and inquiry, a free and independent press may be the only real way to ever get to the bottom of what ranking committee member Adam Schiff said may represent “one of the most shocking betrayals of our democracy in history.”

Just as FBI Director James Comey officially revealed for the very first time (finally!) that indeed since late July the FBI has been investigating whether members of Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia’s interference with our elections, Republicans, led by committee chair and Trump enabler Devin Nunes did their best to blow smoke aimed at deflecting attention from what Trump and his team may or not have done. Instead, they asked question after question about the illegality of leaks of confidential material to the media — in particular, leaks about former Trump national security adviser Mike Flynn’s contacts with Russia.

(Note that there was agreement that leaks are illegal but no one mentioned that it’s the media’s complete and constitutionally guaranteed right to report on them. Nor was anyone asked how many times GOP members of the committee have done their own leaking.)

Trump did what he could to distract as well, firing a volley of five heated early-morning tweets just before testimony began, reiterating claims that disgruntled Democrats manufactured charges about Russia’s involvement in the election and contact with Trump aides. There were more during the hearing itself — from Trump or someone at the White House tweeting in his name — twisting the day’s testimony by Comey and National Security Agency chief Mike Rogers. Bizarrely, the two men then were placed in the position of having to rebut Trump’s allegations while they still were in the witness seats, correcting and putting the president in his place — virtually in real time.

Not only did Comey verify that the FBI was actively investigating Trump and his associates, he also flatly denied on behalf of his agency and the Justice Department that prior to January’s inauguration now-former President Obama had ordered eavesdropping on Trump Tower. Under normal circumstances this would seem to neutralize yet another of Trump’s wacky tweet storms, this one from two weeks ago, but as we’ve learned so well, the truth has never been a barrier to the social media madness of King Donald I.

And yet, as presidential historian Douglas Brinkley told The Washington Post, “There’s a smell of treason in the air. Imagine if J. Edgar Hoover or any other FBI director would have testified against a sitting president? It would have been a mindboggling event.”

But here we are, adrift in a Cloud Cuckoo Land of prevarication and incompetence in which little seems capable of boggling or driving our minds agog these days and where the truth shall not set you free but subject you to ridicule from the rabid trolls of the right.

And still there is hope. Even though neither Comey nor Rogers would reveal much of what they are discovering — continually citing the confidentiality they said was necessary to an ongoing investigation — the questions asked, despite the “no comment” answers, suggested ongoing areas of inquiry not only for investigating committees but also for the press.

For it is the free and independent media that continue to provide our clearest window into the extent of the investigation and the possible interface among the Trump campaign, Russia and the right. Late Monday, for example, McClatchy News reported:

“Federal investigators are examining whether far-right news sites played any role last year in a Russian cyber operation that dramatically widened the reach of news stories — some fictional — that favored Donald Trump’s presidential bid, two people familiar with the inquiry say.

“Operatives for Russia appear to have strategically timed the computer commands, known as ‘bots,’ to blitz social media with links to the pro-Trump stories at times when the billionaire businessman was on the defensive in his race against Democrat Hillary Clinton, these sources said.”

McClatchy reports that most of the stories were linked from social media posts and many of them connected to stories at Breitbart and Alex Jones’ InfoWars, as well as Russia Today and Sputnik News:

“Investigators examining the bot attacks are exploring whether the far-right news operations took any actions to assist Russia’s operatives. Their participation, however, wasn’t necessary for the bots to amplify their news through Twitter and Facebook.”

The spin machines are twirling at cyclonic speeds as the White House and the Republican Party counterattack or try to act as if none of this is happening. Like the refugee couple in Casablanca, they pretend to hear very little and understand even less. At the end of Monday’s testimony, intelligence committee chair Nunes actually told David Corn of Mother Jones that he had never heard of Roger Stone or Carter Page, two of the Trump/Russia story’s most prominent and tawdry players. Ingenuous or ignorant? You be the judge.

“Is it possible that all of these events and reports are completely unrelated and nothing more than an entirely unhappy coincidence?” Adam Schiff asked at Monday’s hearing.

“Yes, it is possible. But it is also possible, maybe more than possible, that they are not coincidental, not disconnected and not unrelated, and that the Russians use the same techniques to corrupt US persons that they employed in Europe and elsewhere. We simply don’t know. Not yet. And we owe it to the country to find out.”

During Schiff’s questioning on Monday, Comey seemed to nod toward agreeing that Russia’s hacking of the Democratic National Committee was not unlike the 1972 physical break-in at the DNC. Trey Gowdy claims Nunes never talked to Trump about Russia — even though he admitted he did

A terse Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) snapped at CBS host John Dickerson on Sunday morning, insisting that House Intelligence Committee head Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) did not speak with President Donald Trump about a Russia investigation despite Nunes telling the press he did.

Appearing on CBS’s Face The Nation, Gowdy — who headed up the most recent investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Benghazi — was asked about the propriety of Nunes speaking with president about the investigation.

“Has he shown you any of what caused him to suggest that Obama officials doing surveillance captured some Trump campaign associates and unmasked them in the process of investigating?” Dickerson asked.

After admitting that he hasn’t seen the information Nunes was given, Gowdy insisted that he is just as much in the dark about the intelligence info as Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the senior Democrat on the intelligence committee.

“I’ll just tell you this,” Gowdy continued. “My understanding is Chairman Nunes briefed the commander-in-chief on matters unrelated to the Russian investigation. So, if that’s a big deal in Washington, then we’ve sunk to a new low.”

“I guess Congressman Schiff would say, ‘But the president is the one who is a part of this investigation being done by the committee,'” Dickerson countered. “So then the chairman shouldn’t be talking to him.”

“Well then let me repeat what I said,” Gowdy replied, his voice rising. “The chairman of house intel briefed the commander-in-chief on something that has nothing to do with the Russia investigation. So if the commander-in-chief cannot be briefed by the chairperson of the house intel committee on a matter that had nothing to do with the FBI investigation, then I don’t know what they can talk about, John.”

Gowdy’s remarks at odd with Nunes who told Sean Hannity on Fox News, “I felt I had a duty and obligation to tell him because as you know he’s been taking a lot of heat in the news media. I think to some degree there are some things that he should look at to see whether in fact he thinks the collection was proper or not.”

Nunes later apologized for running to Trump with the information.

REVEALED: Jared Kushner met with head of Russian bank that hosted spy ring busted by Preet Bharara

Senate investigators want to question senior White House adviser Jared Kushner about his previously undisclosed meeting with a Russian bank that hosted a convicted spy.

Kushner, who is President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, met with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. during the presidential transition and then sent a deputy to a second meeting requested by the diplomat, Sergey Kislyak, reported the New York Times.

White House spokeswoman Hope Hicks told the newspaper that Kislyak requested that meeting to “deliver a message” to Kushner, who the ambassador wanted to meet with Sergey Gorkov, the chief of Vnesheconombank — and he later did.

Hicks said nothing of consequence was discussed at that meeting, and she said Kushner had nothing to hide about the previously undisclosed meeting.

The state-owned development bank was placed on the U.S. sanctions list after Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea and began meddling in Ukraine politics.

Vnesheconombank also hosted a spy ring at its New York City offices, according to U.S. investigators.

Evgeny Buryakov, a Russian citizen, pleaded guilty in March 2016 for failing to register as an agent of a foreign government and conspiring to act as an agent without notifying U.S. authorities, reported The Guardian.

The 42-year-old Buryakov posed as a banker while working for Russia’s foreign intelligence service, the SVR, and conspired with two other Russians — Igor Sporyshev and Victor Podobnyy — to recruit New Yorkers and gather economic intelligence related to U.S. sanctions.

They were also accused of helping a “leading Russian state-owned news organization,” which wasn’t identified in court documents, gather information to help the SVR.

The Kremlin has promoted its interests through English-language outlets such as RT and Sputnik, and it also operates the state-run media outlets Tass and RIA Novosti.

Two U.S.-based right-wing websites, InfoWars and Breitbart News, have come under investigation as part of the broader probe of Russia’s possible involvement in the U.S. presidential election.

Both sites favored Trump, and Steve Bannon, the former head of Breitbart News, now serves as the White House chief strategist.

Sporyshev, a Russian trade representative, and Podobnyy, an attaché to the United Nations, were not arrested in connection with the spy ring because they enjoyed diplomatic immunity and have since left the U.S.

Buryakov was prosecuted by former U.S. Attorney Preety Bharara, who was fired earlier this month by the president after refusing the White House order to resign along with 45 other U.S. attorneys appointed by former President Barack Obama.

Senate investigators will question Jared Kushner about talks with Russian officials

Senate investigators intend to question Jared Kushner about his meetings with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. during the presidential transition.

The Senate Intelligence Committee informed the White House Counsel’s Office of their intention to question Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, about his previously unreported meeting with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak, reported the New York Times.

Kushner’s meeting with Kislyak was revealed in newspaper reports weeks after it took place, and he later met with the head of a Russian bank that had been targeted with sanctions after the annexation of Crimea.

White House spokeswoman Hope Hicks confirmed those meetings but said nothing of consequence was discussed.

Hicks said Kushner, now a senior White House adviser, had met with dozens of foreign officials as part of the transition team’s routine meetings.

However, communications and meetings between Trump associates and Russian officials have drawn increased scrutiny as the FBI and several congressional committees investigate the possibility of collusion between the Republican’s campaign and the Kremlin.

Kushner would be the closest person to the president called before any investigators, although there’s no indication he’s under investigation himself.

Dick Cheney: Russian interference in US election may be ‘an act of war’

Former Vice President Dick Cheney described Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election as “an act of war.”

Cheney gave a speech Monday at Economic Times‘ Global Business Summit, where he discussed “the rising number of threats” facing the world, reported Business Insider.

The former vice president said some of those threats — and Russian President Vladimir Putin — threatened “globalization movements.”

“Not long ago, Gorbachev was in power and the Soviets went out of business … but the situation has changed dramatically under Putin,” he said. “I think he has designs on the Baltics … We know he wanted Crimea — he took it.”

Cheney said Putin had interfered with the U.S. election as part of his worldwide destabilization efforts.

“There’s no question that there was a very serious effort made by Mr. Putin and his government, his organization, to interfere in major ways with our basic fundamental democratic processes,” Cheney said. “In some quarters, that could be considered an act of war.”

Cheney took what appeared to be a shot at President Donald Trump and his Republican congressional allies, who have disputed the intelligence showing Russian efforts to influence the election.

“I would not underestimate the weight that we as Americans assign to Russian attempts to interfere with our process,” Cheney said.

Now things are really coming unraveled fast for Trump and his co-conspirator Rep Nunes because they are in full blown panic mode and their just really stupid cover ups and deflections just keep blowing up in their faces and convict rather than help them.

They keep trying to say they have nothing to hide and yet Nunes cancellled a public hearing to keep Sally Yates from testifying. And now Trump and the White House are claiming the don't have a problem with Yates testifying but that dog won't hunt because Nunes has now cancelled the public hearing, a closed door hearing with FBI Director James Comey and NSA chief Mike Roger, and even cancelled all the routine committee meetings so the Intelligence Committee is completely paralyzed and cannot move forward. So their statements and their actions contradict themselves.

But what makes this obstruction and attempted cover up so utterly stupid in the Senate committee is not going to go along with them.

Sally Yates to testify before Senate panel — even if she doesn’t appear before House committee

Sally Yates, the former acting attorney general, will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee about Russian interference in the election.

The Obama appointee was blocked from testifying before the House Intelligence Committee after its chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), canceled this week’s hearings, where Yates had been scheduled to appear.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), the committee’s vice chairman, told CNN that Yates would testify before a Senate panel even if she did not appear before the House committee.

The White House reportedly tried to block Yates from testifying after her attorney notified the Trump administration she would discuss her concerns about former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Nunes abruptly canceled this week’s House Intelligence Committee hearings hours after Yates notified the White House through her attorney about her intention to testify about Flynn, who resigned after lying to the vice president about his contact with the Russian ambassador.

Yates was fired for refusing to defend President Donald Trump’s travel ban, just days after bringing her concerns about Flynn to White House officials.

Trump’s business ties to Russia include alleged mobsters and money-laundering criminals: report

A new USA Today report reveals that while expanding his real estate developments, President Donald Trump and his business partners turned to wealthy Russians who allegedly had ties to organized crime, including mobs.

The information was found while reviewing “court cases, government and legal documents and an interview with a former federal prosecutor.”

According to USA Today, “The president and his companies have been linked to at least 10 wealthy former Soviet businessmen with alleged ties to criminal organizations or money laundering,” which the outlet detailed in its report.

Among them is “a twice-convicted felon who spent a year in prison for stabbing a man,” an investor in Trump’s SoHo hotel who was accused of money-laundering, and three owners of Trump condos in Florida and Manhattan who were accused of membership to a Russian-American mob and worked for a “crime boss” in Russia.

However, Trump has repeatedly claimed he has “no dealings with Russia.” You can find a detailed timeline of Trump’s connections to Russia — and to individuals with alleged involvement in organized crime, including money-laundering and mob activity — starting as early as 1979.

New York City real estate broker Dolly Lenz told USA Today, “I had contacts in Moscow looking to invest in the United States.” She said she had sold nearly 65 condos in Trump World in Manhattan to Russian investors who wanted to meet him.

“They all wanted to meet Donald. They became very friendly,” Lenz said.

Did Paul Manafort launder money for Russia through Cyprus bank?

A Cyprus bank investigated accounts associated with Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump’s former campaign chief, for money-laundering, but instead of cooperating with the investigation, Manafort closed the accounts, NBC News reported.

Sources told NBC Manafort was associated with 15 bank accounts and 10 companies on Cyrpus. Court documents indicate at least one of those accounts received funds from Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, a billionaire friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, NBC said.

Manafort, who resigned as Trump’s campaign manager in June after questions about his relationship with ousted pro-Russia Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, is under investigation for alleged ties to Russia but has denied repeatedly he ever worked for the Russian government.

Most of the accounts were at Cyprus Popular Bank, which asked for more information on them under the anti-money-laundering procedure known as Know Your Customer, NBC said. Instead of providing the information, Manafort closed the accounts just before a 2012 banking crisis that prompted a government takeover of the bank.

Bank of Cyprus assumed control of Cyprus Popular Bank in 2013 and told NBC the assets it took over did not include any accounts associated with Manafort.

Cyprus is known as a hub for moving money in and out of Russia. In a statement to NBC, Manafort said the accounts were set up for “legitimate business purpose.”

NBC said Manafort operated a complex network of businesses on Cyprus, and at least one of them, PEM Advisors Limited, received millions of dollars from Deripaska for a deal to buy a Ukrainian media network. The deal, which led to a falling out between Manifort and Deripaska, fell through, and the money never was accounted for, court documents in the Cayman Islands revealed.

NBC said it traced PEM and several other Manafort-linked companies to a law office in Nicosia, Cyprus, run by the country’s former justice minister.

The Associated Press reported last week Manafort benefited from a $10 million consulting contract with Deripaska in 2005 to influence politics and news coverage to benefit Putin. Deripaska took out a paid ad in the Wall Street Journal Tuesday to deny the AP report.

"I want to resolutely deny this malicious assertion and lie," the ad said. "I have never made any commitments or contracts with the obligation or purpose to covertly promote or advance 'Putin's government' interests anywhere in the world."

‘Follow the trail of dead Russians’ if you want to crack 2016 election interference: Senate intel witness

Terrorism and espionage expert Clint Watts told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday that if they want to understand Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election, then they need to “follow the trail of dead Russians.”

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) asked Watts at the hearing, “How can the committee track this fuzzy line between the Russian oligarchs, Russian organized crime and the Russian government?”

Watts began by pointing out that he is not an expert on Russia, but a counterterrorism specialist, then explained that the Russian attack on the U.S. election had two components, the virtual or internet component and an actual physical real-world component.

The virtual assault, Watts said, came from a “disproportionate number of fake news outlets” in Eastern Europe, “conspiratorial web sites that are run from there that are English-speaking editors that are pro-Russian. Trained in Russia sometimes. How are they funded? That would be one component.”

“My hypothesis, working in the intelligence field,” he continued, “is that there is some sort of Russian intel asset that is funding them in one way or another through some sort of scheme.”

“The other part that I think we should be looking at is: Follow the trail of dead Russians,” Watts said. “There’s been more dead Russians in the past three months that are tied to this investigation who have assets in banks all over the world. They are dropping dead, even in western countries. We have seen arrests in I believe it’s Spain and different computer security companies that are based in Russia, which provide services to the United States. These are all huge openings to understand how they are funded by the Russian government. I don’t have the capability to do that from where I sit, but I think that’s a huge angle.”

Watts is a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute and a specialist in the Islamic State (ISIS) and cyber terrorism.
