Senator: Flynn ‘flagrantly’ violated federal law and must be prosecuted for hiding Russia payments

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) flatly accused disgraced national security adviser Mike Flynn of breaking federal law by accepting payments from Russia without properly notifying government officials.

A group of Democratic lawmakers, led by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), laid out evidence Thursday morning that showed Flynn had failed to report payments for a speech he gave at an event celebrating the state-run RT network.

Cummings produced letters that showed Flynn, a retired Army general, was warned against accepting foreign money by the Department of Defense, but did so anyway without permission and then failed to report the payments, as required by federal law.

“The evidence that Rep. Cummings just outlined is powerful, mounting, incontrovertible evidence that there has been a violation of criminal law,” Blumenthal said.

The Connecticut Democrat said Flynn’s actions had violated “significant” federal laws and undermined national security.

“The (Defense Intelligence Agency) letters, the (Department of Defense) letters, the Inspector General letters all testify to a flagrant violation of federal criminal statute that must be investigated and prosecuted,” Blumenthal said.

Blumenthal is the first senator to publicly accuse Flynn, who was fired after 24 days on the job for lying to the vice president about his contacts with the Russian ambassador, of breaking the law.

Elijah Cummings just released new docs that destroy Mike Flynn’s defense for taking foreign cash

Newly released documents reveal that the Department of Defense warned former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn against taking money from foreign governments — but nevertheless, he persisted.

CNN reports that the new documents show Flynn was warned by the Defense Intelligence Agency to not accept cash from foreign governments in 2014 as he entered retirement. Flynn nonetheless took money from both the Russian and Turkish governments for paid speeches and for lobbying work, respectively.

“These documents raise grave questions about why General Flynn concealed the payments he received from foreign sources after he was warned explicitly by the Pentagon,” said Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), who released the documents on Thursday. “Our next step is to get the documents we are seeking from the White House so we can complete our investigation. I thank the Department of Defense for providing us with unclassified versions of these documents.”

In a press statement on the documents, Cummings also noted that the newly revealed DIA letter “counters the suggestion by Flynn’s attorney on Tuesday that Flynn followed appropriate procedures for accepting foreign funds for his trip to Moscow.”

Both Cummings and Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) this week said that it appeared that Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, might have committed a felony by not disclosing payments he received from foreign governments before he assumed the role of national security adviser.

Jeff Sessions: I will recuse myself from felony investigation of Mike Flynn

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said on Friday that he will recuse himself from investigations of President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn.

Politico reported Friday morning that Sessions told the “Today” show, “My recusal deals with the campaign issues. But I would expect not to be involved in this one.”

“Today” co-host Matt Lauer asked, “You would recuse yourself from any decision dealing with general Flynn?”

“Yeah,” Sessions replied.

Sessions was a member of Trump’s transition team along with Flynn and both men have been revealed to have been dishonest about their meetings with Russian government officials and dealings with foreign governments during the 2016 campaign and subsequent transition.

In March — after getting caught lying about meetings with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak — Sessions recused himself from the federal probe of Trump’s ties to Russia.

That recusal now appears to extend to matters pertaining to Flynn — who was forced to step down when his lies about Russian connections came to light and is now potentially being charged with a felony for accepting payments from foreign governments without approval from the Pentagon.

On “Today,” Sessions said he’s unaware of any specific investigation of Flynn.

“I really don’t know whether there’s an investigation or should be,” Sessions told Lauer. “And we don’t confirm investigations of – you know, in the Department of Justice.”

UK spy documents: Trump Organization paid Russian hackers who took orders from Putin

Last December, the U.K. government was reportedly given extensive records of Trump campaign officials’ interactions with the Kremlin.

The Guardian reported former MI6 agent Christopher Steele’s infamous dossier about possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia was first given to the UK intelligence services. These documents reportedly contain records of payments from the Trump campaign to banks of Russian cyber trolls tasked with spreading disinformation ahead of the 2016 election.

Court filings confirmed earlier this month that Steele passed along the information because he felt it was “of considerable importance in relation to alleged Russian interference in the US presidential election.”

Steele outlined how four Trump campaign representatives traveled to Prague in the Czech Republic in August or September to have “secret discussions with Kremlin representatives and associated operators/hackers.” The group discussed how they would pay hackers for breaking into the Democratic Party’s computers and developing a “contingency plans for covering up operations.”

The memo reported that hackers were paid by the Trump Organization, however, the hackers were under the direction of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

BUSTED: Montana GOP candidate Greg Gianforte has financial ties to Russian companies under US sanctions

Only days before absentee ballots will be mailed to Montana voters, the only statewide congressional election of 2017 has been thrown into pandemonium following revelations that GOP nominee Greg Gianforte invests in Russian companies under U.S. sanctions.

“The race to fill Montana’s vacant congressional seat has a huge shakeup,” ABC-Fox anchor David Winter concluded while introducing a story by reporter Kolby Crossley. “ABC Fox Montana has learned that Republican Greg Gianforte has financial ties to two Russian companies that have been sanctioned by the United States.”

“Gianforte owns close to 150 thousand dollars’ worth of shares in Vaneck Vectors Russia ETF and more than 92 thousand dollars in the IShares MSCF Russia ETF fund” which have significant holdings in Gazprom and Rosneft.

With absentee ballots for the May 25 special election going out on Monday, the timing of this Russian investment scandal couldn’t come at a worse time for Gianforte.

“It plays directly into the narrative that Gianforte’s campaign doesn’t want to unfold: that Gianforte is a wealthy person from New Jersey, who moved to Montana to build a trophy home and fence off public land while getting rich by outsourcing and other money schemes like these Russian ties,” explained an analysis at the anonymous Montana Cowgirl Blog.

“And it’s made even worse by the fact that he tried to hide this money,” continued the analysis, while pivoting to similarities with Donald Trump’s scandals. “Just like the current administration’s illegal ties to Russian spies, Russian Money and Russian influence, the cover-up is almost a bigger story.”

Gianforte is facing Democrat Rob Quist, who is an iconic figure in Montana.

Montana’s lone congressional seat was vacated when Ryan Zinke was confirmed as Interior Secretary. Republicans have held the seat since former Democratic Party Congressman Pat Willians announced he would retire after winning his 9th term during the 1994 GOP landslide.

Republicans are nervous about holding the seat and have been, “sounding the alarms” with the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) investing $1.2 million in tv ads with the Congressional Leadership Fund Super PAC investing another $800,000 in ads.

While Republicans are going all-in to hold the seat, Politico reporter Elena Schneider had a bombshell report on national Democrats withholding cash from Montana’s special election. This despite the surge beyond traditional support that Democrats saw with James Thompson in the Kansas special election and Jon Ossoff in the first round of the Georgia special election.

While the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committe (DCCC) may be largely surrendering in Montana, independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has promised to visit Montana to campaign for Quist. Both Sanders and Quist are supporters of Single Payer Health Care reform.

Gianforte’s financial ties to US-sanctioned Russian companies were originally unearthed by Ben Jacobs, a Washington, DC political reporter for the Guardian.

The Quist campaign is hammering Gianforte’s Russia connections.

Quist campaign spokesperson Tina Olechowski told the Guardian, “Montana voters deserve to know why Greg Gianforte held on to his shady Russian investments after Putin invaded Ukraine, and again when Russia was accused of interfering in the presidential election.”

“Instead Gianforte kept his Russian ties secret during his failed run for governor last year,” she continued. Gianforte was the only statewide Republican candidate to lose in Montana last year, when Donald Trump carried Montana by over 100,000 votes.

In fact, when the NRCC attacked Quist for performing at a nudist resort in Idaho, the Quist campaign told USA Today reporter Jessica Estepa, “This is just a naked attempt to distract voters from (Republican rival) Greg Gianforte’s shady Russian investments.”

Not only are absentee ballots being mailed on Montana, but Saturday night Q2 news anchor Jay Kohn, Chief Political Reporter Mike Dennison and Mikenzie Frost will be hosting a candidates debate that will almost certainly focus on Gianforte’s Russian connection. The debate will be broadcast live on KTVQ in Billings, KBZK in Bozeman, KXLF in Butte, KRTV in Great Falls, KTVH in Helena and KPAX in Missoula. The debate will also stream live on all Montana Television Network websites and begins at 7PM local time.

Trump says China could have hacked Democratic emails

President Donald Trump said China may have hacked the emails of Democratic officials to meddle with the 2016 presidential election, countering the view of U.S. intelligence officials who have said Moscow orchestrated the hacks.

In an interview transcript published on Sunday, Trump gave no evidence backing his allegation, first made on the eve of the Nov. 8 presidential election, that China could have hacked the emails of his rivals.

“If you don’t catch a hacker, okay, in the act, it’s very hard to say who did the hacking,” the president said in an interview with CBS “Face the Nation.” “(It) could have been China, could have been a lot of different groups.”

The hackers roiled the presidential campaign by making public embarrassing emails sent by Democratic operatives and aides to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. One email showed party leaders favoring Clinton over her rival in the campaign for the party’s internal nomination contest.

Trump has been dismissive of the statements by intelligence officials that Moscow hacked the emails to help Trump win the election. During the Sept 26 presidential debate with Clinton, Trump said China was one of many actors that could have been behind the hack, including “somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds.”

Like Russia, China is a longstanding cybersecurity adversary of the United States. Trump in recent weeks has softened his criticism of Chinese trade policies as Washington seeks Beijing’s support in diffusing military tensions with North Korea.

Before Trump was elected, he pledged to improve relations with Moscow. Russia has denied any involvement in the hacks. Lawmakers are currently investigating whether Trump’s campaign team had ties with Russia.

FBI, NSA Directors to testify about Russia

FBI Director James Comey and National Security Agency Director Admiral Michael Rogers will testify again before lawmakers on Thursday about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, according to a congressional aide.

Thursday’s House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence hearing will be the first since March 20, when Comey testified that the FBI is investigating Russia’s tampering with the presidential election and possible collusion with associates of President Donald Trump. The hearing will also be the first since Representative Devin Nunes, chairman of the committee, recused himself from the Russia probe after the House Committee on Ethics said it was investigating accusations against him.

The House Intelligence Committee, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the FBI are each pursuing investigations into Russia’s election tampering. In January, the U.S. intelligence community published a declassified report detailing the Russian interference, and last October, the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued a statement confirming the subject. Newsweek learned that Comey had tried to go public earlier about Russia’s tampering and proposed writing an op-ed on the topic prior to the October statement.

Comey took the unusual step of corroborating the existence of the ongoing investigation, to the House Intelligence Committee. “I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election,” Comey said on March 20. “That includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts.” Unlike the open March 20 hearing, the May 4 hearing will be closed.

The FBI investigation falls under its counterintelligence program, which aims to protect American secrets and foil foreign spies. Such investigations are among the most challenging, especially when politics are involved, Frank Montoya, Jr., the bureau’s former national counterintelligence executive, has told Newsweek. The investigation could take years and may result in intelligence gathering, not criminal charges, according to Montoya.

The House Intelligence Committee probe will look at whether Russia directed cyber efforts against the U.S., whether Russia colluded with people involved with U.S. political campaigns, whether the U.S. government’s response to Russian efforts was adequate and what leaks took place related to intelligence.

Since the March 20 hearing, the House Intelligence Committee has faced a shake-up. On April 6, Nunes recused himself from the Russia probe after opponents alleged he had shared investigation information with the White House, leading to the ethics investigation. “The charges are entirely false and politically motivated, and are being leveled just as the American people are beginning to learn the truth about the improper unmasking of the identities of U.S. citizens and other abuses of power,” Nunes said in a statement. He added that he would seek to end the ethics investigation.

The House Intelligence Committee had first invited Comey and Rogers in April to appear on Tuesday. The committee also invited former CIA Director John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates to testify. They are not scheduled to appear on Thursday, according to the Congressional aide.

Comey is also scheduled to attend two upcoming Senate Committee on the Judiciary hearings. On Wednesday, he is scheduled to take part in a full committee hearing on oversight of the FBI. Then on May 8, he will speak before the Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism about Russia’s election tampering.

Former AG Sally Yates to testify she gave ‘forceful’ warning on Flynn, contradicting White House: CNN

CNN’s Jim Sciutto is reporting former acting Attorney General Sally Yates is preparing to tell congressional investigators that she gave a “forceful warning” to the White House about former NSA head Michael Flynn.

According to CNN:

In a private meeting January 26, Yates told White House Counsel Don McGahn that Flynn was lying when he denied in public and private that he had discussed US sanctions on Russia in conversations with Russian Ambassador to the US Sergei Kislyak. Flynn’s misleading comments, Yates said, made him potentially vulnerable to being compromised by Russia, according to sources familiar with her version of events. She expressed “serious concerns” to McGahn, making it clear — without making a recommendation — that Flynn could be fired.

Yates is expected to appear before investigators on May 8.

As usual you simply post stupid lies shootersa. Trump fired Yates because she said his Muslim ban was unconstitutional and she could not defend in its present form. Which was also what multiple courts have also concluded. Which is why it remains blocked from the courts.Her firing had nothing to do with allowing immigrants to stay in the country illegally so you should stop telling that lie.

And what Yates is reportedly going to testify to is that Trump and the White House are lying on two counts about Flynn. One being that Yates just gave them "heads up about Flynn." When reportedly what Yates will testify to is that she met with White House Counsel and actually gave them a very forceful warning that one Flynn was lying about his contacts with the Russian Ambassador and could be subjected to Russian blackmail and he represented a National Security risk. And the second thing the White House is lying about is the timeline between the time Yates informed them about Flynn and when they fired him which they claimed was "very short" when the reality is there where three weeks between the time Yates told them about Flynn and when they finally fired him. And that was only after the fact Flynn had lied was published in the press.

Appearing on “Hardball” with host Chris Matthews, the senior Democratic member of the House Oversight Committee said former acting-Attorney General Sally Yates’ upcoming testimony may expose when and how much President Donald Trump knew about former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn’s Russian dealings.

Tuesday afternoon, CNN announced that Yates has stated that she gave a “forceful warning” to the White House about Flynn that went unheeded. Flynn was later forced out after the Washington Post reported he privately discussed U.S. sanctions against Russia with that country’s ambassador to the United States during the transition period.

Addressing Yates’ upcoming testimony, MSNBC host Matthews called it “the ball game.”

“She alerted White House Counsel Don McGahn about discrepancies between the administration’s statements on Flynn’s contact with the Russian ambassador and what really transpired,” Matthews explained. “It turns out, according to McGahn, that Flynn was caught having substantive conversations with the Russian envoy, the ambassador to this country, about sanctions. That’s the serious business of this whole — this is the ball game. If you can show that he was dealing with him on the sanctions issue as part of their whatever in-cahoots deal.”

“The question is, Chris, why would he have been talking to the Russians about the sanctions?” Cummings replied. “And what did the president know about that? I mean, keep in mind he fired him. That is the president fired him. But he fired him three weeks after he knew it, after the president knew it, so why is that?”

“I think every day, there’s a new question that opens up, and then of course the president cozies up to Putin,” Cummings added. “So we’ve got to figure it out. and i think, again, this is a fight for the soul of our democracy.
