CNN, MSNBC Largely Ignore Terror Attack To Focus On Russian ‘Collusion’ Coverage

CNN and MSNBC largely ignored breaking news of a terror attack Monday night in England for nearly an hour to rehash news about President Trump and accusations his campaign colluded with Russia during the election.

Initial reports of explosions at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester came in around 6 p.m. EST, and Fox News began extensive coverage of the attack around 6:50 p.m. By then at least 20 were reported dead and hundreds wounded in what was quickly becoming a clear instance of a major terror attack.

CNN’s Erin Burnett and MSNBC’s Chris Matthews were obviously eager to dive into the Washington Post report at the top of the 7:00 hour, and their segments were literally torn between that news and news of people getting blown up at the concert. WaPo reported that Trump asked two top U.S. intelligence officials to publicly deny the existence of any evidence his campaign colluded with Russia.

CNN and MSNBC briefly cut to news of the attacks before 7 p.m., but both networks opted to devote the bulk of the following hour to a discussion of news regarding the report on Trump and Russian collusion accusations. MSNBC devoted just 26 minutes of that hour to news of the massive terror attack. And CNN covered the attacks for just under 20 minutes.

“Police say there have been a number of fatalities and a serious incident after a concert at Manchester arena,” Matthews said in the opening of his segment. People at the arena are heard screaming in the background of his segment, as a video clip from the arena plays. “A senior U.S. intelligence official tells NBC news there has been an explosion. We’ll get the latest on that in a minute.”

“We begin however, with the shocking news in Washington tonight,” he continued, quickly switching to a topic deemed more important. Matthews spent the next 20 minutes discussing the report on Trump, before briefly getting back to the attack.

Burnett did not even mention the attack at the beginning of her segment on MSNBC. Viewers who tuned in at 7 p.m. would have had no clue the attack was happening until about 17 minutes into her show.

“Breaking news — a stunning report,” she said in her opener, teasing the report on Trump and a silly dispute over whether Melania batted his hand away on their trip Monday, but making no mention of the terror attack.

“I’m going to talk to the Washington Post reporter breaking this story,” she said. “Trump and Israel denying something he was never accused of — did he incriminate himself? And the presidential putdown. Did Melania refuse to take the president’s hand?”

While some of the details of the Washington Post report are new, the thread of the Trump campaign asking intelligence officials to tamp down on media reports accusations of collusion with Russia is old news. Reports circulated as early as February that Trump’s chief of staff Reince Priebus asked the FBI to deny reports that campaign advisers were communicating with Russian intelligence agents during the campaign.

Harvard study: CNN, NBC Trump coverage 93 percent negative

How negative was press coverage of President Trump's first 100 days in office? Far more than that of Barack Obama, George W. Bush, or Bill Clinton, according to a new report from the Harvard Kennedy School's Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy.

The Harvard scholars analyzed the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and the main newscasts (not talk shows) of CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC during Trump's initial time in office. They found, to no one's surprise, that Trump absolutely dominated news coverage in the first 100 days. And then they found that news coverage was solidly negative — 80 percent negative among those outlets studied, versus 20 percent positive.

The numbers for previous presidents: Barack Obama, 41 percent negative, 59 percent positive; George W. Bush, 57 percent negative, 43 percent positive; and Bill Clinton, 60 percent negative, 40 percent positive.

That said, the coverage of some news organizations was so negative, according to the Harvard study, that it seems hard to argue that the coverage was anywhere near a neutral presentation of facts. Assessing the tone of news coverage, the Harvard researchers found that CNN's Trump coverage was 93 percent negative, and seven percent positive. The researchers found the same numbers for NBC.

The Harvard study had plenty of criticism for Trump. "Never in the nation's history," the authors wrote, "has the country had a president with so little fidelity to the facts, so little appreciation for the dignity of the presidential office, and so little understanding of the underpinnings of democracy."

But the authors made clear that journalists are very much part of the problem. "At the same time, the news media need to give Trump credit when his actions warrant it," the study said:

The public's low level of confidence in the press is the result of several factors, one of which is a belief that journalists are biased. That perception weakens the press's watchdog role. One of the more remarkable features of news coverage of Trump's first 100 days is that it has changed few minds about the president, for better or worse. The nation's watchdog has lost much of its bite and won't regain it until the public perceives it as an impartial broker, applying the same reporting standards to both parties. The news media's exemplary coverage of Trump's cruise missile strike on Syria illustrates the type of even-handedness that needs to be consistently and rigorously applied.

The Harvard team is undoubtedly now studying coverage of Trump's second 100 days. (They issued reports on key periods in the presidential campaign, as well.) The question is, will anything change?

The goal of the internal attacks on President Donald Trump that manifest themselves as leaks is not to alter policy, but to subvert the president, former Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, said Wednesday on Hannity.

Kucinich said the actions of the “deep state” — a so-called group of influential government employees trying to manipulate government policy — have the Trump administration “under attack from within.”

Trump’s internal threats result from agencies with their own agendas, said Kucinich, who ran for the White House in 2004 and 2008.

“Well, you have a politicization of the agencies. That is resulting in leaks from anonymous, unknown people and the intention is to take down a president,” Kucinich said.

“This is very dangerous to America. It is a threat to our republic. It constitutes a clear and present danger to our way of life,” he added.

Although the daily deluge of leaks has many asking whether the material is true, Kucinich said the American people should be asking other questions.

“We have to be asking: What is the motive of these people? Who’s putting these leaks out? Why isn’t somebody coming forward to make that charge and put their name and their reputation behind it instead of attacking through the media and not substantiating their position?” he asked.

Kucinich said t was time to set party politics aside, because “our first allegiance is to our country.”

“This isn’t about one president, this is about the political process of the United States of America being under attack by intelligence agencies and individuals in those agencies, yes, as you said there might be good people in there, but there are certain individuals who are lifers who want to be able to direct the policy of the country,” Kucinich told host Sean Hannity.

Kucinich was emphatic that the deep state has no partisan preferences.

Hannity has said that in addition to deep state efforts to undercut Trump, the president faces an alliance between that element and the “destroy-Trump propaganda media” that pushes “tin-foil hat conspiracy theories” revolving alleged Russian collusion.

Ratings just measure numbers, and since the greatest numbers are down the lower end, are we surprised that FOX gets the highest ratings- same applies to newspapers, who has the highest circulations? I consider myself to be a middle of the road conservative. What I have noticed is that the same story is spun in a different light depending on whether their liberal or conservative. Why can't they just report the news without their spin and let me decide what I think.
