Yeah, that happens to me a lot too.
I'll have a good rating, and then get enough negative votes to knock me off the front page, but I get voted back up again, only to be knocked down once more.
It take only one, or two votes to take you down, but a lot more to build you back up, and I always end up coming back up.
What I've chosen to take from this is that more people than not like what I write enough to click a button.

 

Oh fuckit who really cares the people who like our work typically seek out our work anyway and read it reguardless of weather or not it's in the top 10.

 

I mostly agree with you, but being in the "Top Rated - Last 30 Days" list makes a huge impact on the number of people who read the story. If you can get your story on the list for two or three days, you'll have ten times the number of reads, and a corresponding increase in comments. I can tell you this from experience. I've had stories ranging all over the scale. Some managed to stay almost the entire 30 days on the list. Some dropped off immediately. If you look through the list of my stories and examine the read counts, you'll be able to tell which are which.

 

However, there are exceptions. My stupid little story written for the ejls competition was on the 'top rated - last 30 days' list for almost the entire 30 days, but the read cound did not even come close to the number of reads enjoyed by stories by you, JackassTales, Mark Twayn, ejls, etc.

The author of the story matters more, certainly for my reading habits, that does the position on the list.

 

I have a very small, but dedicated following, and besides myself, of course, these are the people I write for.
It's really cool, and kind of humbling, that every time I get a hateful comment these days, I get at least three comments telling the hater to fuck off.:excited:

Top Rated Last 30 days

What everyone is saying about this being where we get high reads and comment is spot on. And the higher you are makes a huge difference. Within that it'll depend on the title and tags to attract readers and the quality of the text to keep them reading.

xnxx has never divulged, as far as I know, what constitutes a read. Does simply clicking on it count? Or do they measure how long a reader stays or how far they scroll down? Some sites which break stories into short pages will only count a "read" if the reader goes to the second page.

I am absolutely convinced that xnxx manipulates the votes. This comes from spending far too much time watching my stories and those of a few other authors. Negative votes often aren't used in the calculation and are often deleted. Stories which vanish from the front page get resurrected. A year ago falling off the front page meant almost certainly that the story has lost its time in the sun.

The same manipulation of votes appears to be happening in top rated of all time. xnxx will change the stories at the top to enliven the list but will bring back the old favorites.

I'm not complaining. One of my stories has been receiving this "kind" treatment for quite a while.

Why would they do it? Maybe it's just a software glitch. Maybe they have their own ideas of what stories will make the site more attractive to readers and adjust vote % ages accordingly.

 

It does help to be in the top rated for 30 days for at least a short time in order to get exposure; maybe a day at minimum.

Though an author that wrote one good story, many good stories, or possibly does little more than showing potential can create a following behind him/her.

To be honest keeping the same user name does much the same effect

 

I wish the new stories section was larger, so that we really could see what has come out that day. Too many times a story is buried before it has a chance to be read. I find myself starting there now, instead of top rated.

 

When you click on 'More..' at the bottom of the 'Latest Stories' section you will find in order all of the latest releases. I always use this capability and almost never look at top rated.

 

Writing as the opposite sex - Gentlemen, have you written from the woman's perspective? Ladies, have written from the man's perspective. Straight people, have you written a gay/lesbian story and vice versa. How had was it for you?

The closest I came was my first Nora story, which I tried to tell from Phillip's point of view. It wasn't first person from him, but it was a mild attempt. In that case, because Nora was such a strong character, it wasn't that hard. But then, I'm not sure that anyone caught that I wrote it that way.

 

I have written from the female's point of view first person. I am working on a story where I am trying to write from the female's point of view third person.

Not easy but interesting.

In both "Becky's after school surprise", and "Emma awakened" I write from the first person perspective of fifteen year old girls.
As to how well I pulled it off, I leave to the readers to decide.

 

My entry for the contest was written from the viewpoint of the 12 year old girl. Of course, there were no feelings to express, just lust and being sneaky. Easy, even I could do that.

 

Or perhaps stretching myself a little in a new story. I never know what I'm going to write until it comes out of my fingers.

 

maybe that is the same one that in one day put 124 negative votes on my story that was 97% after several hundred reads, and put 24 on another newer one. The reason I haven't posted any more.

 

It seems that several of us have stopped posting stories. Why bother when they are trashed for no reason?

LOVE your stories. Post them here on the forum! To hell with the story area. It's for suckers! Put your stories right here where we can all enjoy them and comment on them and nobody's going to give them a low rating because it doesn't work that way here.

Putting a story in the story area is just giving free material to the unwashed masses and gets you NOTHING in return.

Post your stories here and, after a time, toss it to the story area if you feel like it.
