This will probably surprise some people, but to tell you the truth, Colbert really grates on my soul. I love John Stewart, but I find Colbert unwatchable. I know it's all satire, but I have a lot of trouble seperating him from his ersatz Bill O'Reilly personna, and I tend to think of him as the same sort of egomaniac.

 

I have that same problem, actually. I feel about him kind of like I feel about Family Guy. Funny: but really hard to watch sometimes. There are times when I really want him to put down the schtick and just talk. But I'd still see him as an improvement over almost any candidate out there. I'm soooo tired of the political machine in this country.

Amen to that. I'm also thoroughly annoyed at the way the media covers politics. Watching the debates and the talking heads afterwards, it's all about who got what zingers in, who gained two points in the polls, and on and on, ad nauseum. It's like watching Monday Night Football..."WOW, did you see the hit he put on the quarterback? THAT'S gotta hurt!"

 

I wasn't really around to see it, but from what I hear the debates used to be much different. Hillary's awesome stumble at the last democratic debate was awesome. I can't stand that bitch. But they used to be able to call people on things. If you made shit up they had fact checkers who would verify and then maybe next round say "you know you lied, right?".

Chris Matthews was doing his job, forcing Hillary to confront her double-talk and he was viciously attacked. "How dare you make her answer questions!" etc. The debates are prescripted and the candidates all know in advance what their talking points are going to be and every time you try to get a real answer from them you get "I want to go back to this and talk about this" and you're fed a whole lotta bullshit.

I try really hard to be optimistic, but it just depresses me. We're in a lot of trouble and no one seems willing to stand up and say something.

I hear that "I'll get back to you" routine a lot in Congressional hearings on C-SPAN, too. It's their way of saying "I'm not going to answer that under oath in public, but I'll lie to you privately when I'm free to do so without any repercussions."

But I agree with you that people should be able to say what they like in the debates. I considered the attack on Hillary the other day totally fair game, because she likes to try to have it both ways on a lot of issues. Nothing new there, I suppose. But my REAL beef against her right now is that she seems to be following the Bush playbook (planting audience members, planting questions, stifling dissent, etc.).
