Actually Pelosi did the right thing and recognized the political realities. The first and most important thing is to get the emergency funds approved. And while some House Democrats wanted a lot more this was not the time and the hill to die on. Especially after the Senate bill passed with so many Democrats voting for it. They would look like they were simply obstructing at a time of crisis. They put up a good fight. Pelosi extracted a promise out of Pence to implement the standards. And the majority of Americans are now much more aware of the abuse children and migrants are suffering in Trump's concentration camps.

Its actually things exactly like this that make Nancy Pelosi one of the best Speakers of the House in modern history. She knows how to lead and she knows how to govern.

Yeppers...this sure looks like Pelosi is one of the best Speakers of the House in modern history.

Bringing a bill up to vote that hasn't any damn chance of getting an ounce of attention in the Senate...yeah...a true leader, or a true Governor, how ever you leftists want to call it.

“The administration opposes what the House is going to do,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. “We believe they support what we’re going to do.”

The House and Senate were out of alignment, approving competing bills. The front-runner for final passage, though, was fairly evident: The Senate bill secured more than 60 yeas, making it filibuster-proof, while the White House threatened to veto the House measure.

The House still held out hope, engineering a revised bill on Thursday as the plan came back across the Capitol from the Senate.

But the administration wouldn’t budge. McConnell wouldn’t budge. Things looked bleak for the House bill, even as it was apparent the House could approve the Senate version with most Republicans and many Democrats.

Nancy Pelosi Trashes Left Wing of Democratic House in Interview as ‘Four People’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticized left-wing Democratic congressmembers’ opposition to a border security bill, saying “they didn’t have any following.”

“All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” she said. “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”

Pelosi made the remarks in an interview with New York Times opinion columnist Maureen Dowd, who asked her about Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley criticizing the passage of a Senate version of a bill funding border security initiatives.

“If the left doesn’t think I’m left enough, so be it,” she said. “As I say to these people, come to my basement. I have these signs about single-payer from 30 years ago. I understand what they’re saying. But we have a responsibility to get something done, which is different from advocacy. We have to have a solution, not just a Twitter fight.”

While the House passed the Senate version of the bill, Pelosi also criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, calling him “authentically terrible.”

With all due respect, the press likes to make a story that is more about Democrats divided than the fact that Mitch McConnell doesn’t care about the children,’’ Pelosi said.

Ocasio-Cortez responded in a tweet Saturday night.

FBI, ICE Using State Driver’s License Databases for Facial-Recognition Searches

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement are tapping into state driver’s license databases to conduct facial-recognition searches without the consent of the hundreds of millions of people whose information is at risk, the Washington Post reports. FBI officials have made hundreds of thousands of facial-recognition searches in various government databases since 2011, oftentimes scanning through Department of Motor Vehicles databases. But unlike information taken from suspected criminals, which has long been available to officials, DMV data includes many state residents who have no criminal charges and have not signed off on sharing their information. Law enforcement accessing state databases is “often done in the shadows with no consent,” House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD) told the Post.

In many states, including New York and Washington, D.C., undocumented immigrants can either obtain a full driver’s license or a limited permit. Utah, Vermont, and Washington State also allow undocumented immigrants to obtain full or restricted licenses, and ICE agents are confirmed to have already run searches through those DMV databases, thus making them vulnerable to any scrutiny. Other states have recently pushed for allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driving privileges—a move that a senior associate with Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy and Technology, Clare Garvie, told the Post is “an insane breach of trust” if lawmakers then allow the government to access that information. Lawmakers in Florida and Texas have already introduced legislation to extend driving privileges, and Florida and New York are currently negotiating over FBI access to the driver databases.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has demanded the resignation of Labor Secretary Alex Acosta over his involvement in a case against Jeffrey Epstein that resulted in an extremely lenient sentence. When he was working as a U.S. attorney in Florida in 2007, Acosta negotiated a plea deal that led to two felony solicitation charges and 13 months in a private wing of a county jail for Epstein—and the financier was allowed to work from his office six days a week. His alleged victims were not told about the deal. Pelosi tweeted late Monday a demand that Acosta leaves his role over the “unconscionable agreement” he cut for Epstein. “Secretary Acosta must step down. As U.S. Attorney, he engaged in an unconscionable agreement w/ Jeffrey Epstein kept secret from courageous, young victims preventing them from seeking justice,” she wrote. “This was known by [Trump] when he appointed him to the cabinet.” Epstein was indicted Monday on sex-trafficking charges.

Pelosi: Barr ‘Lied Under Oath’ So ‘I’m Not Speaking’ on Anything He Has to Say

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said today that she will no longer be discussing actions made by Attorney General William Barr because she believes he lied while under oath and testifying before Congress.

“I don’t even want to address him,” Pelosi shot back to a reporter who asked the top Democrat about Barr accusing Democrats of attempting to gin up “some kind of public spectacle” by bringing former special counsel Robert Mueller before Congress.

“He has lied to Congress as the attorney general of the United States,” she added. “He’s lied under oath. I’m not speaking to anything more that he has to say.”

During a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing in April, the attorney general claimed to have no knowledge of Mueller’s team taking issue with some of his public comments clearing Trump of wrongdoing, but it was later revealed that Mueller had called and sent a letter to Barr expressing concern over his remarks.

Pelosi has previously said that Barr “misled” Americans and needs to provide “answers” regarding his testimony on Mueller’s report.

“It’s time for DOJ to release the full report & all underlying docs — and finally allow Mueller to testify. Americans deserve the facts,” she wrote in May. “Barr must stop standing in the way.”

Pelosi: House will vote next week to hold Barr and Ross in criminal contempt over census

The House will vote next week to hold a pair of top administration officials in criminal contempt of Congress for withholding information related to the census, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced Thursday.

"Next week, the full House will vote on a resolution of criminal contempt for Attorney General [William] Barr and [Commerce] Secretary [Wilbur] Ross so we can enforce our subpoenas and get the facts," Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) later clarified that the vote will be Tuesday.

"We will hold this Admin accountable for continued obstruction & oppose efforts to undermine the census," Hoyer tweeted.

The House Oversight and Reform Committee had voted before the July 4 recess to hold Barr and Ross in contempt for defying the panel's subpoenas for documents surrounding President Trump's efforts to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.

Pelosi specified Thursday that the resolution coming to the floor next week would feature criminal contempt — a step that can carry steep penalties, including heavy fines and up to a year in prison.

The move to hold top administration officials in contempt is largely symbolic, however, since there's little chance that Department of Justice (DOJ) attorneys would pursue the Democrats' referrals to bring criminal charges against their own boss. But the vote will escalate the already intensifying fight over Trump's bid to include the citizenship question on the 2020 census.

The DOJ had initially claimed the question is needed to enforce the Voting Rights Act, but the argument was shot down by the Supreme Court, which called it "contrived" and invited the administration to come up with a new rationale.

On Wednesday, Trump suggested he'll take steps to add the citizenship question to the census by executive order. He's expected to speak from the White House on the issue at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Pelosi and other opponents argue that adding the citizenship question would discourage participation by immigrants, not only those in the country illegally but also those living in the country legally. The results, the critics say, could distort the population numbers — and skew the allocation of representatives in Congress — in favor of Republicans.

Pelosi on Thursday noted that several courts have issued injunctions blocking the inclusion of the citizenship question.

"We have been printing the census forms. June 30 was the deadline, so we're printing the forms. We fully expect the census to go forward," Pelosi said. "The president's effort to put the citizenship question on the census will continue to be challenged in court."

Pelosi also pointed out that Democrats are fighting for more census funding as part of the ongoing talks to lift budget caps heading into fiscal 2020.

"One of our issues in the [debate over] lifting the caps is more money for the census," she said.

'She is not a racist': Trump sides with Speaker Nancy Pelosi in spat with progressives

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has an unlikely defender: President Donald Trump.

Trump stuck up for Pelosi on Friday after freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York ramped up her criticism of the Democratic speaker.

Ocasio-Cortez accused Pelosi earlier this week of singling out “newly elected women of color” for criticism. Ocasio-Cortez’s comments and an earlier tweet by her chief of staff injected the possibility of racism into an ongoing spat between Pelosi and the progressive wing of the House Democratic Caucus.

Trump, who has had more than his own share of run-ins with Pelosi, came to her defense.

"I'll tell you something about Nancy Pelosi that you know better than I do: She is not a racist,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday before departing for a trip to Wisconsin and Ohio.

Trump slammed Ocasio-Cortez for being “very disrespectful” to Pelosi. He added, “For them to call her a racist is a disgrace.”

In a series of tweets on Sunday, Trump suggested that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and other Democrats should “go back” to their country of origin.

Pelosi responded to the the president’s tweets by accusing him of trying to make “America white again.”

Pelosi sets spending demands for two-year budget deal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Saturday that a two-year budget agreement with the Trump administration must include equal increases in defense and nondefense spending, plus additional money for a program intended to improve healthcare for military veterans.

"We all agree on the need to address the debt limit, but we also must reach an agreement on spending priorities based upon the principle of parity as soon as possible," the top Democrat in the House of Representatives told U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in a July 13 letter.

Pelosi's office said it released the letter after she and Mnuchin spoke by phone on Saturday evening for 12 minutes.

"The two-year budget agreement we are working to achieve should provide equal increases in the defense base and the non-defense base over the next two fiscal years," the speaker said in the letter.

"But it also must provide $9 billion in additional funds for the VA MISSION Act in fiscal 2020 and $13 billion in additional funds in 2021," she wrote.

The VA Mission Act, which passed Congress with bipartisan support, seeks to revamp healthcare services provided through the Veterans Administration by allowing veterans to obtain private care, expanding assistance for caregivers and incentives for health professionals, and making other changes.

Pelosi told Mnuchin that past agreements on parity between defense and non-defense spending did not take into account the growing cost of implementing the program.
