You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

The death penalty deters violent crime and makes society safer.

    FACT
Evidence from around the world has shown that the death penalty has no unique deterrent effect on crime.
Many people have argued that abolishing the death penalty leads to higher crime rates, but studies in the USA and Canada, for instance, do not back this up.
    In 2004 in the USA,
the average murder rate for states that used the death penalty was 5.71 per 100,000 of the population
as against 4.02 per 100,000 in states that did not use it.

In 2003 in Canada, 27 years after the country abolished the death penalty the murder rate had fallen by 44 per cent since 1975, when capital punishment was still enforced.

Far from making society safer, the death penalty has been shown to have a brutalizing effect on society.
State sanctioned killing only serves to endorse the use of force and to continue the cycle of violence.

      I understand you points ,
but I have to ask ,
how many people were actually executed for murder in the US in 2004 ?

It's hardly a deterant when it's almost never used.
They have a much higher chance of. being murdered than executed.

Individuals are less likely to commit violent crimes, including murder, if they know they will face punishment by execution.

    FACT
This argument supposes that criminals study and anticipate the consequences of getting caught, and decide that a long term of imprisonment is acceptable, whereas execution is not.

Many crimes are committed on the spur-of-themoment, leaving little opportunity for potential punishments to influence whether the crime is committed in the first place as criminals do not believe they will be caught and held to account. The death penalty may even cause further violence.
Execution is the ultimate sanction a state can inflict upon a person. Once criminals have knowingly committed a capital offence, they no longer have any interest in lessening their potential punishment by not committing further murders or other offences. For example, if armed robbery carries the death penalty, the robber loses nothing by committing murders while attempting to flee.

So you're willing to use the death penalty knowing that innocent people will die because of false convictions? Bet you wouldn't be so cavalier if it was your life or someone you loved on the line.

"So then no one should be sent to prison either ..... "
I doubt that you can establish any sort of link between your assertions - it's also a classic example of

      Reductio ad Absurdum

Taking your path the logical conclusion is
      # Execute all convicted of murder ASAP so that they don't have the chance to appeal, to ensure that they never murder again, even if they were innocent in the first place.

      # Send everyone convicted of a crime carrying a possible prison sentence to incarceration for life, without the possibility of an appeal - that will stop them from committing another crime, or bring found guilty of committing a crime of which they were in fact innocent.

    6. Josef.K.
      And then:

      # Execute anyone who might commit a murder in the future before they can actually murder anyone
      # Incarcerate all who may be suspected of possibly committing a crime at some future date.

However, since the Tax take for Banging-up all these possible criminals will be very large - the public may be persuaded to have these prisoners executed to keep their tax bills lower.

How did these murderers in France get their hands on these assault rifles? How did they get into France or even into the EU. Were they home made or did they come from overseas? My point which people are meticulously avoiding is that these incredibly strict laws did nothing to prevent these attacks. To say that well these were just outliers is to miss the point. To say that these were just 2 incidents, so what, is willfully ignorant because it is far more than 2, as I demonstrated in a previous post.

My point again is to say that as long as there is a market for assault rifles there will be a supply.

It is really not hard to understand ,
if you look at the actual facts ,
      and the situation.

Europe is as close to Africa Arabia and the middle east ,
and all the mayhem , war , and organised terrorism in those areas ,
with borders from St Petersburg , all the way round to the Straights of Gibraltar ,
      as
the US is to Cuba , Mexico and Central America .

Just consider yourselves very lucky you have the Atlantic Ocean between you and all of that mayhem.
Otherwise the picture would be a whole lot worse.

Are you serious? Are you thinking about what you’re saying?

The point is to lessen gun violence. You do that by restricting access to guns.

If you’ve got four kids in a sandbox, and one of them picks up a rock and throws it at another kid, the answer is to not give everybody a rock and say throw it whenever you feel like it, the answer is to take all the rocks away.

The fact that gun violence in Europe is an outlier is a clear indication that restrictive gun laws work better there than the open gun laws that are existent in the United States.

      Beg to differ.
If a kid throws a rock you educate the kid about why rock throwing isn't a good idea. If he isn't getting the message you might whack him on his ass. Unless you don't believe in whacking kids on the ass to emphacize a point. Then, you might send him to his room and take away his electronics.

Taking away the rocks just makes them more desireable. And you can never get rid of all the rocks. And even if you could there are sticks and (sometimes) little green apples, or tomatoes.

You just gotta fix the kid, not the rock.
The kid is the problem, not the rock.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you about training the kid.

As a matter of fact, I agree you train the kid not to need a rock, and not to do dangerous things around other kids.

But you sure as hell don’t hand out rocks to all the kids and say, “Get really good at rock-throwing for sport, and always carry a rock with you in case someone is acting in a manner that frightens you.”

    3. shootersa
      Sighs
So, following the analogy, we'd be handing out guns to everyo e.
      We don't.
For the most part people gotta buy a gun.

And it doesn't change the idea that the idiot with the finger on the trigger is the real problem, not the gun.

Now, limiting guns might prevent a tragedy. The problem is, that pesky constitution. Can't cross it, gotta follow the constitution. To get a law passed, congress would have to get off their collective asses, and actually work together. All the yammering about whose fault it is amounts to bullshit politics, and that won't get a gun law passed.

    4. submissively speaking
Maybe you don’t hand out rocks to everyone, but you sure are telling each other the only way you’ll be safe is if every person has a rock.

And the rocks from the rock pile are bigger, heavier, and with a hell of a lot more sharp pointy edges than the rocks that were laying around when that pesky ol’ Constitution was drafted.

Hell, some people were still property back then. Sure seems you can accept and adopt change and advancement in some areas, why not others?

Statistically it can be shown that the death penalty is not effective as a deterrent but why should people who have murdered be allowed to live? Tax payers are doubly victimized and if the murderer has killed before what incentive does he have not to murder again in prison?

      Tax payers are doubly victimized

The death 'penalty', like everything else in your benighted society, has become part of the neo-liberal application of The Market to everything.
Move over morals, principles, religion, democracy etc

      The Market Rules. OK

Only a brainwashed sickening parrot would say something as utterly stupid as mayhem bleeding into the US from other countries when we have blood running like a river in our own streets from young white males born in raised here.

I got your mayhem right here.

The notion of markets is undervalued among liberals. And this is to their peril.

When Ronald Reagan was first elected liberals blamed his winning the election on the fact that the country had become more racist and misogynistic. So the thinking was to verbally attack the very “consumers” necessary to win elections. So of course the part of the electorate needed to achieve election victories felt liberals were saying that they knew better than them and that they were out of touch with their values.

By the 1980s liberals were turning increasingly to the Supreme Court to win their agendas and a large part of the American people again were looking at liberals as people who were not interested in what the electorate wanted because they were turning to the least democratic institution to achieve their agenda.

Fortunately the court is more centrist now.
