Trump official paid president’s campaign $744,000 for experts to pump up her ‘personal brand’: report

In April, President Donald Trump’s Medicare and Medicaid Administrator Seema Verma faced public backlash after a report detailed a $2.25 million contract she awarded to Republican consultants to bolster her own public image.

But the scandal may have been even worse than that. According to Politico, among the 40 outside contractors hired as part of this contract included “eight former White House, presidential transition and campaign officials for President Donald Trump” — who charged up to $380 per hour for “strategic communications” work and relied on the federal government’s convoluted contractor system to conceal what they were doing.

Among the contractors Verma hired were Marcus Barlow, her former spokesman when she was consulting for Mike Pence while he was governor of Indiana. Barlow’s contract allowed him to bill up to $425,000 in one year — which is more than twice the salary of the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Also hired were Ken and Keith Nahigian, who worked for multiple GOP presidential campaigns and the Trump transition team, Brad Rateike, who advised the Trump campaign, and Maggie Mulvaney, a Republican fundraiser who is now working on Trump’s re-election team.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services deny anything improper, with a spokesperson saying, “When the administrator started in 2017, [Verma] wanted to ensure that the agency was communicating with the American people about CMS programs and not just relying on inside-the-beltway health press. At that point, CMS did not have the specialized expertise or bandwidth needed to execute on a strategic communications plan for the agency’s work in ensuring all Americans have access to affordable, high quality health care.”

Verma has long been a controversial figure in the Trump administration. She is the mastermind behind the plan to encourage states to disenroll working-age adults without a job from Medicaid, which resulted in tens of thousands of low-income people — including some who are working — being kicked off the rolls in Arkansas. This work requirements plan is largely stalled in federal court.

Trump official busted inflating her resume to comical proportions — including phony Time magazine cover

A senior State Department official has been caught falsifying her qualifications — and even created a phony Time magazine cover with her own face on it.

Mina Chang, the deputy assistant secretary in the State Department’s Bureau of Conflict and Stability Operations, falsely claimed to be a Harvard graduate and inflated the scope of her nonprofit organization’s work, reported NBC News.

Chang, who joined the State Department in April, was connected to the administration by Brian Bulatao, a top official in the State Department and longtime friend of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Bulatao attended a fundraiser for Chang’s charity in Dallas and donated $5,500, according to a former Chang colleague.

Chang made up a role on a UN panel and claimed to have addressed both the Democratic and Republican national conventions, and implied she had testified before Congress, the network reported.

*She had been under consideration for a promotion until Congress questioned her résumé.

The president infamously posted phony Time magazine covers showing himself at properties owned by Trump Organization.

Chang’s official biography claims she is an “alumna” of Harvard Business School and “graduate” of a program at the Army War College, but it appears she attended brief courses at both institutions but did not earn a degree.

Her LinkedIn account mentions the University of the Nations, an unaccredited Christian school with volunteer teachers that claims 600 locations “on all continents.”

RNC to host winter meetings at Trump's Doral resort

The Republican National Committee (RNC) will hold its winter meetings at one of President Trump's family properties early next year, a spokesman confirmed Thursday.

The annual RNC gathering will take place at Trump National Doral outside Miami. The same property was chosen to host the Group of Seven (G-7) summit next year, but that decision was quickly reversed in the face of bipartisan backlash.

The winter meetings will take place in January. Doral has been the chosen site for some time, as the RNC signed the contract for the venue in March.

Most of the RNC's recent meetings have taken place at locations not owned by Trump, though the organization did hold its 2018 summer gathering at Doral.

Still, a spokesman asserted that the site had more to do with logistics than serving the president's brand.

"The media is obsessed with our spending at Trump properties and has covered it ad nauseam. As we have stated multiple times, we continue to hold events at them because they have fantastic service and secure spaces that fit our needs," RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens said in a statement.

The decision is likely to draw criticism from outside groups that have accused Trump of using the presidency to enrich his family's brand.

The Doral property in particular has struggled to keep revenues up since Trump launched his presidential campaign, according to reporting from The Washington Post.

The White House originally announced in October that the Doral property would host next year's G-7 summit. However, Trump announced days later that he would find a new location amid intense bipartisan backlash over using one of his family's properties for the gathering of world leaders.

He regularly visits his golf club in Virginia during the summer and stays at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in the winter.

Vice President Pence also sparked controversy when he opted to stay at a Trump property in Doonbeg, Ireland, rather than in Dublin, where he was meeting with Irish officials.

GOP demanded $500K donation from Trump Bahamas ambassador during his Senate confirmation hearings

Newly uncovered emails reveal that the Republican National Committee demanded that President Donald Trump’s nominee for the U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas donate $500,000 ahead of his Senate confirmation hearings.

CBS News reports that RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel asked billionaire Doug Manchester for more cash at a time when his confirmation as Bahamas ambassador had seemingly stalled.

“Would you consider putting together $500,000 worth of contributions from your family to ensure we hit our ambitious fundraising goal?” she asked him in an email.

Manchester replied and told McDaniel that he’s “not supposed to” be donating to the RNC at the same time he’s up for an ambassadorship. All the same, he said his wife would send along a check for $100,000.

He then asked McDaniel to put pressure on the Senate GOP to move his confirmation hearing along.

CBS News investigative reporter Jim Axelrod confronted Manchester about the emails and told him that “you know what this looks like.”

Manchester responded defensively and insisted that his wife’s contribution had nothing to do with getting confirmed by the Senate.

“Well — it looks like it to you,” he said. “But it’s not the facts. My wife gave out of separate funds and she in fact loves Donald Trump.”

The RNC said it was inappropriate for Manchester to link the donation to his ambassadorship nomination and added that it has since returned the money donated by the family this year.

Trump-Backed North Dakota Company Gets $400M Border Wall Contract

A North Dakota company received a $400 million contract to build a portion of wall along the U.S.-Mexico border after President Trump urged military officials to hire the firm. Fisher Sand and Gravel Co. will build 31 miles of border barrier along the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge in Yuma County, Arizona, the Defense Department said in a Monday statement, with an anticipated completion date of Dec. 30, 2020. The Washington Post reports that Trump had pushed the Army Corps of Engineers to select the company to win the contract, but had been told Fisher’s bids did not match the required standards. The company’s CEO, Tommy Fisher, has appeared on Fox News to insist that his company would do a better job than the other firms the government had already chosen, according to the Post.

Indicted Giuliani henchmen tried to broker Ukrainian gas deal at Trump’s DC hotel: report

Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, the two associates of Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani who were indicted on election fraud charges earlier this year, reportedly tried to broker a major deal with the CEO of Ukraine’s state-owned natural gas company at President Donald Trump’s flagship hotel in Washington D.C.

Vice reports that the two men pitched Naftogaz CEO Andriy Kobolyev on a deal to export natural gas from the United States to Ukraine at the Trump International Hotel in Washington shortly after former American ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch was recalled after being targeted with a smear campaign.

“Taken together, these events appear to show how Parnas and Fruman attempted to profit from their connections to Giuliani while allegedly helping him search for damaging information about former Vice President Joe Biden in Ukraine,” Vice reports. “Giuliani’s efforts to get Ukraine to investigate the Bidens are now at the center of President Trump’s all-but-certain impeachment in the House.”

Kobolyev’s attorney Lanny Breuer confirms to Vice that his client voluntarily spoke with prosecutors who are investigating Parnas, Fruman, and Giuliani’s dealings in Ukraine.

Giuliani, Parnas, and Fruman were at the center of an effort to get Yovanovitch ousted from her ambassadorship even as they were pursuing private business interests in the country. Yovanovitch testified under oath that she believed the men were trying to push her out so they could personally enrich themselves.

Donald Trump Jr now under federal investigation for killing endangered sheep during Mongolian trophy hunt: report

Donald Trump, Jr. is facing an investigation by his father’s administration over a trophy hunting trip in Mongolia of endangered sheep.

“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said it will review allegations that Donald Trump Jr., may have illegally killed a rare sheep during a recent trip to Mongolia and imported parts of the animal back to the U.S.,” Roll Call reported Wednesday.

“Animal conservation activists said President Donald Trump’s eldest son may have violated a federal wildlife anti-trafficking law after ProPublica reported last week that he shot and killed an argali sheep without proper permits during a personal trip in August,” the publication noted. “The Mongolian government issued a permit for hunting the sheep after the fact, and it’s unclear what happened to the animal after it was killed, according to the report.”

The president’s eldest son was harshly criticized for killing an endangered species.

“A spokesperson for Trump Jr. on Tuesday provided a statement to CQ Roll Call denying allegations of wrongdoing related to the hunting permit. In the statement, which was also provided to ProPublica, the spokesperson said the hunting trip was purchased in 2015 at a National Rifle Association auction before his father announced his presidential campaign and all permits were secured through a third party hunting group,” Roll Call noted. “Trump Jr.’s spokesperson declined to comment on whether any argali animal parts were imported to the U.S.”

The two men, Favorov says, told him that to facilitate a deal in which large quantities of liquified natural gas from Texas would be sold to Ukraine they would have to call on their high-ranking GOP connections to remove two obstacles: Favorov’s boss and the U.S. ambassador in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital. Favorov dismissed the conversation as an idle boast but was astonished when, within a few months, Naftogaz CEO Andriy Kobolyev had been ousted and Trump had recalled U.S. Ambassador to the Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, a career diplomat with a reputation as an anti-corruption crusader. Giuliani has publicly acknowledged pushing to get Yovanovitch replaced, however in a text exchange with the AP on Sunday, Giuliani said he had no interest in efforts by Parnas and Fruman to land a gas deal. “I had no involvement in a deal. ‘Pirate’ Trump PACs have ripped off the president’s supporters to the tune of $46 million: report

While the effort to get President Trump reelected is widespread, some pro-Trump PACs that are unaffiliated with Trump’s campaign are targeting grass roots donors and “reportedly spending little money to help Trump’s re-election.” POLITICO reports.

The groups have raised a combined $46 million through various means, including selling Trump merchandise. But the Trump campaign wants the activity to stop, since it ends up competing with the “pirate” groups for cash.

“It’s taking advantage of people who want to give [money], and a vast majority of this money doesn’t go to the campaigns,” said GOP operative Matt Gorman. “It doesn’t go to the cause.”

In a statement, the Trump campaign slammed any group that “deceptively uses the president’s name, likeness, trademarks, or branding and confuses voters” and encouraged authorities to investigate “all alleged scams for potential illegal activities.”

Watchdog uncovers another ‘wildly corrupt’ Trump scheme of spiking hotel rates to profit off of reelection

A watchdog group claimed this week that President Donald Trump is profiting off of his own reelection campaign in a “wildly corrupt” way.

The details were revealed in a report from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).

CREW staff first noticed “a mysterious spike in the price of available rooms at Trump’s DC hotel for a Saturday night in December.”

“The minimum cost was 13 times the average, but we couldn’t identify a reason for the spike, until photos surfaced of the Trump Victory Committee’s winter retreat at Trump’s Hotel on that exact night, which appears to have sold out much of the venue,” CREW explained.

The report continued:

There’s no question that political spending like the Trump Victory Committee fundraiser has helped make Trump’s DC Hotel one of the few bright spots in his financial portfolio, despite it’s high vacancy rate. CREW has tracked 72 political events held at Trump properties during the Trump presidency, 40 of which have been held at his DC hotel. Trump Victory has been a particularly loyal customer for the DC hotel, hosting fundraisers in June 2017, September 2018, May 2019, and June 2019. The Center for Responsive Politics found that all the political spending at the hotel is paying off, totalling nearly $20 million since the 2016 election cycle.

CREW concluded by calling the scheme to profit off of the president’s reelection “wildly corrupt.”

“Running for president typically involves raising vast sums of money for the campaign, but to be personally making millions off of a reelection effort is both unprecedented, and wildly corrupt,” the report noted. “President Trump has repeatedly claimed that the presidency has cost him business. The repeated rate jumps at his hotel surrounding political events suggest that, at least for his DC property, this couldn’t be further from the truth.”

All the president’s bag men: Here are the Trump cronies who were indicted, convicted or imprisoned this year

President Donald Trump has seen an unusual number of his longtime associates indicted, convicted, or sentenced to prison over the last year.

Many of the convictions of Trump associates sprang from evidence uncovered during former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, but some of them have also been tied to the president’s more recent scandal with Ukraine that has resulted in his impeachment in the House of Representatives.

Below, we’ll recap all the fates of Trump allies who have been indicted, convicted, or imprisoned this year.

1.) Former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Manafort was the man who just couldn’t stop committing crimes.

Even after getting indicted for money laundering, tax fraud and bank fraud charges related to his shady lobbying work in Ukraine on behalf of a Kremlin-backed politician, Manafort proceeded to engage in witness tampering while in prison, and also wrecked his own plea deal by continuing to lie to investigators.

For all his crimes, the one-time Trump campaign chairman was sentenced in March to roughly seven-and-a-half years in jail.

2.) Former personal attorney Michael Cohen.

Cohen, who served as Trump’s longtime “fixer,” was sentenced to three years in prison for making illegal campaign contributions in the form of hush-money payments to two of Trump’s former mistresses, as well as for charges of bank fraud and tax evasion.

Cohen reported to the Federal Correctional Institute in Otisville, New York, in May — but not before he went before Congress and delivered humiliating testimony for the president in which he accused Trump of being a criminal and a racist.

3.) Former Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY).

Collins was the first Republican Congressman to endorse Trump’s 2016 bid for the White House.

Less than four years after Collins made that fateful endorsement, however, he resigned his seat after pleading guilty to insider trading charges.

Collins’s sentencing is due in January, and he has already been permanently barred from acting as an officer or director of any public company. Legal experts believe he faces a likely sentence of five years in prison.

4.) Trump-loving dirty trickster Roger Stone.

Stone, who infamously boasted about his contacts with WikiLeaks in 2016 regarding information on Hillary Clinton’s stolen emails, was found guilty last month on seven counts that included perjury, obstruction of justice, and witness intimidation.

Stone, who got his start as a political dirty trickster working for President Richard Nixon’s campaign and who even has a tattoo of the disgraced 37th American president on his back, is due to be sentenced in February. He faces up to 50 years in prison, although legal experts believe his actual sentence will be far lighter.

*5.) Rudy Giuliani henchmen Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman.

Parnas and Fruman helped Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani in his ill-fated quest to retrieve dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden before getting indicted this past October on campaign finance violation charges.

Prosecutors allege that Fruman and Parnas illegally laundered money from a Russian donor into the United States that was used on Republican political campaigns.

Prior to their arrests, the two businessmen helped arrange meetings between Giuliani and Ukrainian prosecutor Yuri Lutsenko, who at one point claimed to have dirt on the Bidens.

6.) Former Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA).

After getting indicted for fraudulently spending campaign funds in 2018, Hunter claimed that he was the victim of the same kind of “Deep State” conspiracy that was working to bring down President Donald Trump.

One year later, however, Duncan pleaded guilty to stealing at least $150,000 in campaign funds and using them to make at least 30 illegal transactions.

Hunter, who was the second congressional Republican to endorse Trump after also-convicted former Rep. Chris Collins, faces sentencing of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Eric Prince — brother of Betsy DeVos — facing investigation for violating US sanctions during overseas trip: report

One of President Donald Trump’s most controversial allies could be facing an investigation for violating United States sanctions.

“Erik Prince, a major Republican donor and founder of controversial security firm Blackwater, has been referred to the U.S. Treasury Department for possible sanctions violations tied to his recent trip to Venezuela for a meeting with a top aide of President Nicolas Maduro,” the Associated Press reported Monday, citing two senior officials.

“There’s no indication that Prince, whose sister is Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, will be sanctioned for the meeting last month in Caracas with Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez,” the AP reported. “But the fact the visit was flagged underscores the concern of officials in the Trump administration over what appeared to be anunauthorized diplomatic outreach to Maduro. This, as support for opposition leader Juan Guaidó inside Venezuela — if not Washington — appears to be waning.”

Prince has been widely criticized for his mercenary work.

“Little has been revealed about Prince’s surprise trip to Caracas last month. But the mere presence in Venezuela of a businessman with longstanding ties to the U.S. national security establishment prompted questions about whether he was there to open a secret back channel to Maduro on behalf of the Trump administration, something the State Department has strenuously denied,” the AP noted. “It also marks something of a reversal for Prince, who earlier in 2019 was thought to have been pitching a plan to form a mercenary army to topple Maduro.”

The potential investigation into Prince occurs as Trump is being impeached for Rudy Giuliani’s shadow foreign policy for private gain.

“Prince has been accused of acting as a back channel on behalf of Trump before. In 2017, he met with an official close to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Seychelles, islands off the coast of east Africa. Special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on his Russia investigation said the meeting was set up ahead of time with the knowledge of former White House aide Stephen Bannon,” the AP noted.

Alex Jones humiliated as Texas judge orders him to pay $100,000 in court costs for Sandy Hook case

On Monday, The Daily Beast reported that far-right conspiracy theory radio host Alex Jones has been ordered to pay $100,000 in court costs as part of a lawsuit brought against him and his InfoWars network by Neil Heslin, the parent of a child who died in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

Travis County Judge Scott Jenkins rejected a motion by Jones to dismiss the suit, and ordered him to pay $34,000. This is on top of nearly $66,000 that Jones was already ordered to pay for refusing to comply with a court order about providing documents and witnesses.

The decision is yet another blow to Jones in a humiliating case, in which Heslin’s lawyers have argued Jones has consistently defied court orders about preserving information.

Jones is famous for claiming that the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax that used child actors recruited by the government, a claim that caused great anguish to the parents who lost children in the massacre.

New Yorker writer Adam Davidson tweeted Sunday that when Iran leaders set up front companies to try and acquire weapons of mass destruction that the Trump Organization met with one of those front groups.

“One of Soleiman’s chief goals was to acquire WMD missile systems that could threaten Israel and US installations,” Davidson wrote on Twitter Sunday. “He assigned the job to his ally, Mohamed Bagher Ghalibaf. When sanctions began, the IRGC used front companies to handle WMD acquisition.”

He explained that the Darvishi brothers, who served as chief deputies to Ghalibaf, set up one of the largest and most successful fake companies named Azarpassillo. The main partner was Azerbaijan’s Minister of Transport, Ziya Mammadov, who sent his son to the United States to meet with the Trump Organization and other businesses.

“Mammadov sent his son, Anar, to the U.S. in 2010 to develop business ties with U.S. companies,” Davidson tweeted. “He spent lavishly but got no takers. It was well-known that the Mammadovs laundered money for the IRGC and were wildly corrupt. Only one American business worked with them.”

It was President Donald Trump’s company.

“Ivanka worked extremely closely with the Mammadovs on their absurd tower,” Davidson explained. In 2015, the Trump Org acknowledged they knew the Mammadovs were likely laundering money for the IRGC. They kept working with them until after the 2016 election.”

Major Trump Donor Imaad Zuberi Charged With Obstructing Probe Into Inauguration

Imaad Zuberi, a major donor to President Trump’s inaugural committee, was reportedly charged with obstructing a federal probe into whether foreign nationals were illegally giving money to Trump’s inaugural fund. According to the Associated Press, the Los Angeles-based venture capitalist is accused of taking “numerous steps” to block the investigation into where Trump’s inaugural fund got its cash—taking actions like backdating a $50,000 check and deleting emails, prosecutors claimed. Zuberi, who has also donated to Democrats, gave $900,000 to the president’s inaugural committee and recently pleaded guilty in a separate case in which he’s accused of failing to register as a foreign agent, campaign-finance violations, and tax evasion. Zuberi’s attorney reportedly declined to comment.
