The United States is encountering one of the severest economic and health catastrophes not seen in over 1OO years. The Coronavirus crisis has profoundly impacted every single American’s life: from our vulnerable children’s parents to our heroic health care workers and those on the frontlines.

Pelosi: Next round of coronavirus relief will top $1 trillion

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is telling fellow Democrats that the next phase of emergency coronavirus relief will top $1 trillion.

In a conference call Monday with more than 180 House Democrats, Pelosi said the last relief package — a historic, $2.2 trillion infusion adopted less than two weeks ago — is insufficient to help the medical workers, businesses and employees affected by the fast-spreading pandemic.

She and a number of committee heads are busy drafting another round of emergency funding designed both to supplement the assistance already provided and expand it to include more affected populations, particularly rural, low-income and other vulnerable people left struggling to make ends meet as the coronavirus spreads around the country.

Democrats are working to provide more money for medical equipment and personal safety supplies for front-line workers, expand unemployment benefits from four to six months, provide another round of cash payments to individuals and extend food stamps, particularly for children who might miss meals as a result of mass school closures.

They also want to boost the fund providing low-cost loans to small businesses to cover payroll, rent and other expenses as they fight to weather the crisis. The $2.2 trillion package — the third emergency relief bill passed by Congress in the last month — allocated $349 billion for the Paycheck Protection Program, which extends those loans. But banks have grumbled about the lack of administrative guidance as they implement the program, and the sheer volume of applicants, Democrats warn, is threatening to exhaust the fund before many eligible businesses are able to tap into it.

"We've done a great deal, and we just have to get that out," Pelosi told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Monday night. "But as it goes out, we know already that the acceleration of the pace of this virus, and this assault — not only on the lives but the livelihood of the American people — that we must do more. So we're preparing for CARES 2 already."

Fueling the urgency, Janet Yellen, the former head of the Federal Reserve, told Democrats on Monday's call that she expects the number of unemployment applications — which soared to 10 million over just two weeks in March — will jump even higher when the Labor Department releases its latest figures this week.

It's unclear when Democrats intend to release the package, or stage a vote on it. Both the House and Senate are on recess until at least April 20. But as conditions worsen on the ground — both medically and economically — there's a growing pressure on lawmakers to move a fourth package quickly. Pelosi has said she'd like to get it through the House before month's end.

It's equally unclear how the next round of help would be received in the Republican-controlled Senate. GOP leaders in both chambers have been resistant to the idea of moving another bill before the funding is distributed from the $2.2 trillion package, allowing them to gauge its effectiveness. They've also hammered Democrats for proposing a host of provisions the Republicans deem extraneous to the current crisis, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has warned that he won't allow Pelosi to "jam" the Senate with partisan legislation passed by the House.

Still, McConnell over the weekend acknowledged that a fourth package is inevitable.

“There will be a next measure,” he told The Associated Press over the weekend.

Pelosi and the Democrats, meanwhile, are pressing President Trump to appoint a single figure in the administration to assess the country's medical needs and supply chain, and manage the distribution of equipment and funding from the White House.

"You have to have somebody in charge, to manage it," she told Maddow late Monday. "It just doesn't happen to be that it goes politically where somebody might want it to go. It goes where it is needed."

Aides expect Schumer, Mnuchin to reach deal on coronavirus relief

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) are expected to reach a deal this week on an interim coronavirus relief bill that would provide money to businesses, hospitals and state governments.

The deal could lead to legislation being passed quickly through the Senate on Thursday, and through the House no later than early next week.

The House has said it will not return to Washington until at least the week of May 4 given the danger of the coronavirus, which has sent lawmakers in both chambers home.

Democrats say that Mnuchin, who is spearheading negotiations for Republicans, is open to a deal even though Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) doesn’t show much interest in negotiating with Schumer and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Mnuchin, speaking at the White House on Monday, said legislation should focus on small-business programs and that other issues such as funding for state governments and hospitals should be dealt with separately — though he also expressed a willingness to work with Congress on getting money to various needs.

“This was a bipartisan program,” Mnuchin noted at a White House briefing. “We should top up that program now. I know the Democrats want to talk about more money for hospitals and states. Right now we’re just sending the money out to the hospitals and states. They haven’t come close to using that money.”

GOP aides, however, think a deal is likely.

They expect the Small Business Administration to announce this week that funding for the small-business Paycheck Protection Program needs to be replenished immediately, which will put pressure on McConnell to accept Schumer and Pelosi’s demands to add money for hospitals and state governments to the legislation to get it quickly through Congress.

In the Senate, the opportunity to pass a deal will come Thursday when McConnell indicated he may offer another unanimous consent agreement to provide at least $250 billion to the popular small-business lending program.

Democratic leaders say a portion of that money should be set aside for women- and minority-owned businesses in underserved areas and be paired with at least $250 billion for hospitals and state and local governments.

“I suspect what will happen is at some point the Small Business Administration will say they’ve committed the full $350 billion that they’ve got and officially need more and Schumer and Pelosi will say ‘OK, here’s the price to be paid for that,’ and Mnuchin will say, ‘OK, let’s do it’ and then we’ll go to the floor and do a U.C. and pass it,” said a Senate Republican aide, referring to a unanimous consent agreement needed to waive Senate rules to quickly pass legislation.

One House Republican, Rep. Thomas Massie (Ky.), says he will try to force a roll-call vote on an interim package, which if successful would force lawmakers to return to Washington early to get legislation through the House.

But the presiding House chair, a Democrat, could overrule Massie’s objection, just as Rep. Anthony Brown (D-Md.) did on March 27 to get around a similar Massie objection.

Agreeing to an interim deal this week would spare lawmakers from having to come back next week to resume negotiations on coronavirus relief funding.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) announced Monday that he does not expect the House to be back in session next week, signaling a deal by unanimous consent to avoid a shortfall in small-business lending funds is likely this week.

“Members are advised that absent an emergency, the House is not expected to meet prior to Monday, May 4, 2020,” Hoyer’s office said in a floor update.

Hoyer’s office said that rank-and-file House members would be “given sufficient notice” if Congress is unexpectedly required to convene earlier “to take action on critical legislation related to the coronavirus response or other legislative priorities.”

Senate Republicans are starting to realize that Schumer and Pelosi aren’t going to budge from their demands for $100 billion in additional funding for hospitals and $150 billion in additional funding for states and that the Trump administration doesn’t have much appetite for drawing out the political drama any longer.

Schumer and Pelosi also demanded a 15 percent funding increase for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for low-income Americans.

The Small Business Administration reported Monday that it has approved more than 941,000 applications for loans totaling at least $228 billion, 65 percent of the $349 billion that Congress appropriated for the Paycheck Protection Program in the CARES Act. More than 4,500 lending institutions have participated in the program.

Republican governors are also stepping up pressure on GOP lawmakers in Washington to provide significant additional aid for strapped state budgets.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, the Republican chairman of the National Governors Association, released a statement with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) Saturday calling for an additional $500 billion in federal aid for states and territories.

“In the absence of unrestricted fiscal support of at least $500 billion from the federal government, states will have to confront the prospect of significant reductions to critically important services all across this country, hampering public health, the economic recovery, and—in turn—our collective effort to get people back to work,” the statement said.

With requests for additional aid piling up, some Republicans think it might have been easier for McConnell to have agreed to Schumer’s and Pelosi’s request last week for only an additional $150 billion in aid for states.

“They should’ve taken the deal last week and said ‘sure.’ Money for the states, money for hospitals, money for SNAP is a pretty cheap price to pay, considering all the other things Democrats want on the table,” said a Senate GOP aide.

Media outlets have published pictures of long lines of people waiting at food banks around the country as nearly 17 million people have applied for unemployment benefits in recent weeks.

McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced Saturday they would again request a “clean” infusion of more money to the small-business program.

McConnell on Thursday requested $251 billion for the program on the Senate floor, but Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.) objected on behalf of the Democratic leadership.

Cardin, who spoke with Mnuchin on Thursday, warned Monday the Small Business Administration is fast running out of money.

“It’s important that we act, and I hope that we can act this week, and we need to get together as we did on the CARES Act, a 96 to zero vote in the Senate. That’s what we need to do again,” he told Fox News.

Cardin noted the Small Business Administration’s emergency grant and loan program “has already run out of money.”

Several million small businesses are being cut back on their requests — an average of a $200,000 emergency loan to only $15,000 — and the grant program is also oversubscribed,” he said.

“So we need money in the Paycheck Protection Program, we need money in the emergency grant and loan program. We need to get that going,” he said.

Cardin found Mnuchin open to an interim deal when he spoke with him Thursday.

Schumer’s office on Monday evening issued a press release pointing to growing Republican support for some of the changes Democrats have requested to the small-business funding request.

The United States Conference of Mayors sent a letter to congressional leaders Monday to “strongly urge” that supplemental funding for the Paycheck Protection Program also include emergency fiscal assistance for America’s cities.

They said they support the Democratic leaders' call for $53.55 billion in emergency fiscal assistance through Community Development Block Grants.

Schumer’s staff also highlighted a letter signed last week by eight GOP senators highlighting “the economic difficulties facing our hospitals during this crisis” that “threaten significant, long-term consequences.”

The Republican senators, including two in competitive races — Sens. Cory Gardner (Colo.) and Joni Ernst (Iowa) — wrote that Congress should “prevent the unnecessary loss of providers and health workforce” and offered to work with Schumer and McConnell on legislative changes in the funding package for the small-business program.

We've already given the labor force all the incentive they need to stay off as long as possible.
We've already told people to forget paying their rent or mortgage.
We've already told people they don't have to worry about student loans.

Oh, and not to mention a fucking ADDITIONAL $2.2 TRILLION added to the debt, at a time when the economy sucks. So what the hell, add another $1 TRILLION to the debt.

“On April 6, Bharat Ramamurti became the first person named to the Congressional Oversight Commission supposed to police the massive coronavirus relief fund. A former top staffer for Senator Elizabeth Warren, Ramamurti expected to have company — the new law requires congressional leaders to appoint a five-member panel,” wrote Joshua Green. “He’s still waiting.”

Dear Colleague: We Must Insist and Act on the Truth in the Coronavirus Crisis

Dear Democratic Colleague,

This Easter Weekend provided me with a time for deeper prayer and reflection. This is an unbearably sad time with all Americans sharing the same devastating experience: we are grieving for those who have died from the coronavirus, we are fearful for our health and especially the health of our loved ones and we are heartbroken for our children who are unable to be in school and with their friends.

As Americans, we are suffering from pressures of economic hardship. All of us want to resume the precious and beautiful lives that America’s unique freedoms provide. We will overcome this moment, but success requires one fundamental from which all actions will follow: we need the truth. To succeed in this crisis, we must insist on the truth, and we must act upon it!

In order to move forward, we must first understand the truth of what has put us in this position:

The truth is that Donald Trump dismantled the infrastructure handed to him which was meant to plan for and overcome a pandemic, resulting in unnecessary deaths and economic disaster.

The truth is that in January Donald Trump was warned about this pandemic, ignored those warnings, took insufficient action and caused unnecessary death and disaster.

The truth is that Donald Trump told his most loyal followers that the pandemic was a hoax and that it would magically disappear, thus endangering lives and paving the way for economic disaster.

The truth is that we did not have proper testing available in March despite Trump repeatedly claiming that we did; and even now, we do not have adequate tests, masks, PPE, and necessary equipment, which creates unnecessary death and suffering.

The truth is because of an incompetent reaction to this health crisis, the strong economy handed to Donald Trump is now a disaster, causing the suffering of countless Americans and endangering lives.

The truth is a weak person, a poor leader, takes no responsibility. A weak person blames others.

The truth is, from this moment on, Americans must ignore lies and start to listen to scientists and other respected professionals in order to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

Here’s more that is true: the American people want us to work together. In March, Congress passed three bipartisan bills to address this crisis. The first bill passed the House on March 4 and focused on testing, testing, testing.

The truth is, one month later, we do not have appropriate testing. The President continues to obfuscate, saying we have more testing than any other country in the world. The truth is that only 1 percent of Americans have been tested. The failure to test is central to the spread of the virus and its impact on those most vulnerable in our society. The failure to test is dangerous and deadly, and without testing, we cannot resume our lives.

The President has said that we are engaged in a war. Leaders understand that in war, force protection of our troops is the top priority. In this war, force protection means for health care, police, fire, EMS, food and other essential workers to have the protective equipment that they need to save lives without risking their own.

The truth is that we do not have the necessary hospital equipment. Without ventilators and other equipment, our health care workers cannot save the lives of those they serve.

Once we all share the truth of what took place and what is currently happening, including in our minority communities, we can work together to solve these problems.

There are important decisions ahead. We can go forward confident that America, its competent and honest leaders and its people are fully capable of making the right choices and decisions to restore the American greatness that has been squandered.

But if we are not working from the truth, more lives will be lost, economic hardship and suffering will be extended unnecessarily and our children will not be safe, happy and learning. Our future will be healthy and prosperous if we no longer tolerate lies and deceit.

We must recognize the truth, we must speak the truth, we must insist on the truth and we must and will act upon it.

Millions of Americans have been thrown out of work by the government closures in response to the pandemic.

One way of trying to save some of those jobs was the Paycheck Protection Program, which provides loans to small businesses and gives them incentives to keep their employees employed.

As we reported earlier, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is bragging about blocking additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program that’s been saving jobs.

But, no skin off her nose, right? She’s not about to lose her job (well, we can hope, come November, but it is San Francisco so chances are small). What does she care if millions are thrown out of theirs, apparently.

The House beat it out of Washington and wouldn’t be meeting on anything until May 4, “absent an emergency,” says Democrat House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. Not like we’re in the middle of an emergency and people might need that money to help stay afloat.

But just so you know how much she cares, Pelosi gave us a lovely “Let them eat cake” Marie Antoinette moment from her luxurious San Francisco home, with what looks like two refrigerators. Nice to become rich while being in Congress.

If you’ve lost your job or are having trouble getting toilet paper, food or paying your mortgage or rent, what a great thing it is to see Pelosi talk with James Corden about how she keeps her spirits up “during these trying times,” showing off expensive commercial grade appliances jam packed with her $12 pints of designer ice cream in her freezer.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) did an interview from her home in San Francisco with James Corden on “The Late Late Show.”

As we reported earlier, she had her Marie Antoinette moment were she told Corden how she was keeping her spirits up in her luxurious home, eating chocolate, she explained as she sat in front of two uber expensive commercial grade refrigerators. She showed one that was packed with designer ice cream that usually costs about $12 a pint. That sparked a hashtag #LetThemEatIceCream as a recognition of her truly tone-deaf actions in the middle of a pandemic where millions have lost their jobs and are trying to figure out how to live and eat.

On top of all that, she’s the one, along with other Democrats, standing in the way of Americans actually getting help through the Paycheck Protection Program. Pelosi bragged about the Senate blocking the refunding of the program last week. They were given a clean bill, basically saying just put in more money, you already approved the program in the virus relief bill. But the Democrats blocked the refunding with Pelosi saying there wasn’t enough “data” to understand the request. Then they said they wouldn’t be back in session until May 4, “absent an emergency.”

What do they think a pandemic with millions out of work is?

Well the “data” today is that the fund runs out this afternoon, so if you haven’t gotten it yet, you’re out of luck until Pelosi decides to stop eating ice cream and comes back to address the emergency in D.C. and passes the bill.

Well, isn’t it nice she can have the grandkids travel from New York to see her while everyone else is required to stay at home and social distance. Most kids aren’t able to see their grandparents. Isn’t there a stay at home, don’t travel advisory out of New York? Rules for me but not for thee.

Glad this is all a “wonderful opportunity” for them. Pandemics tend not to be wonderful opportunities for most people and perhaps not so much for other kids. Most kids aren’t able to see their grandparents.

Seriously, imagine if President Donald Trump had sad something like that, it would be all over the news about how out of touch and entitled he was. But this wouldn’t even be touched by mainstream media.

Pelosi: President Trump’s decision to halt WHO funding is illegal, will be challenged

Nancy Pelosi said she intends to try and block President Trump’s decision to suspend aid to the World Health Organization (WHO).

On Wednesday, the House Speaker told reporters she’s seeking to strike down the administration’s efforts to withhold funds for the WHO for their role in the coronavirus pandemic. She said this decision is “senseless,” “illegal” and that it “will be swiftly challenged” in Congress.

While taking to Twitter Tuesday, Pelosi claimed President Trump has been trying to blame others for mistakes he’s made amid the U.S. virus outbreak. Top Democrats on the House Oversight Committee are also attacking the president over his proposal to cut the organization’s funding.

In a letter Wednesday, Oversight chair Carolyn Maloney and congressman Stephen Lynch accused the president of failing to address the COVID-19 outbreak. The two Democrats claimed President Trump proposed to defund the WHO to deflect responsibility onto others.

This came after Taiwan released a letter that revealed it was asking the WHO about the virus outbreak back in December 2019. Republican lawmakers have said they are looking at a growing pile of evidence of alleged conspiracy between China and the WHO.

‘He’s a weak leader’: Nancy Pelosi forces Fox News viewers to hear truth about Trump ‘mistakes’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) took the case against President Donald Trump to one of his favorite news networks on Sunday.

During an interview on Fox News, host Chris Wallace asked the Speaker why she had recently referred to Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic as “weak.”

“I’ll tell you why I came to that,” Pelosi recalled. “What I decided was the president has made many mistakes. Okay, let’s have an after-action review of that.”

“But if he continued to put forth proposals that were not science based… what did he say? It’s a hoax, it’s magically going to go away? Okay, put that aside,” she continued. “But to proceed with policies that were not science based, which are not evidence based and to blame others.”

“Name anybody, blame the governors, blame me, blame the World Health Organization,” Pelosi said of Trump. “Leaders take responsibility. So I said he’s a weak leader. He doesn’t take responsibility. He places blame on others.”

The Speaker argued that Trump’s playbook “might have been okay” before the coronavirus pandemic.

“But we cannot continue down a path that is — again — I come back to science, science, science,” she said, “evidence, data on how we could go forward.”
