Rep. Gaetz: I don’t plan to resign

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said he has no intention to resign. The Florida congressman told The Hill Friday, the rumors he plans to step down from his office “are false.”

These rumors followed reports that Gaetz is under investigation by the Department of Justice for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a minor and violating sex trafficking laws.

Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said if the claims are true, he would remove Gaetz from his committee assignments. Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the Ethics Committee should probe the claims.

She also called for the removal of Gaetz amid sexual misconduct and trafficking allegations against the Republican lawmaker. Pelosi commented on the investigation into Gaetz and said he should be removed from the House Judiciary Committee despite no formal charges being brought against him.

Gaetz was accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and traveling with her across state lines. While he denied these claims and said the allegations stem from a bribery attempt by a federal official, Pelosi emphasized that if Gaetz is guilty his punishment would fall outside the jurisdiction of Congress.

“If in fact, these allegations are true, of course being removed from the Judiciary Committee is the least that could be done,” Pelosi said. “But again, I think from what we’ve heard so far, this would be a matter for the Ethics Committee.”

The Speaker’s comments came after she received criticism for allowing Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) to remain on the House Intelligence Committee despite evidence of his long-standing relationship with a Chinese spy.

In late March, McCarthy slammed Swalwell and Pelosi’s decision to appoint him despite evidence of a clear security breach.

“If you can not get a security clearance in the private sector, you should not be appointed to the Intel Committee,” McCarthy said. “Eric Swalwell, based on everything in public that you know, cannot get a security clearance in the private sector, but only in Congress would he get appointed to learn all the secrets of America.”

McCarthy also introduced a resolution to remove the Democratic lawmaker from the committee. He noted Swalwell has not denied the allegations against him. McCarthy also suggested Swalwell received campaign funds from China.

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) appeared on MSNBC on Saturday to analyze situation in an interview with Alex Witt.

"Let's also not forget the hypocrisy here, Alex," Moulton said. "This is the wing of the Republican Party that's always lording Christian values over all the rest of us -- Matt Gaetz is having one hell of an Easter weekend here."

"These are very serious allegations, and if they are proven, he doesn't need just need to be removed from Congress or from a committee as some people have called for, he needs to go to prison," Moulton said.

"This is disgusting. Will it impact his work? Frankly, he's not a very productive member of Congress in the first place, he just tries to go around supporting Donald Trump," he explained. "But, he needs to go, that's pretty clear to me."

First of all, Trump supporters have never rejected a candidate be he preyed on teenage girls. Morals are something they expect other people to have.

The idea of a candidate being honest, honorable, or follow any particular moral code, die with Donald Trump's election. They recognized that their goals of returning to an American society and economy where white people took preference, could not be accomplished by an honest person. Only a duplicitous person could do it.

A lot of laws have to be rewritten or broken, and that's not the job of an honest person.

That's the key to understanding Trump's appeal. His supporters wanted a dirty rotten bastard who could cheat on his wife, cheat on his taxes, walk away from debt, and deny it all with straight face. Trump's problem was, besides having all those abilities, he's not very smart.

It's easy to see why. Trump's would is actually quite small. For all of his business career, he's surrounded rather small group of people, and he decides who's in the group. He gets elected President and brings the group with him. For the first time in his life, he faced people who had no reason to do it his way and no reason to cooperate. For all his "art of the deal" nonsense, he couldn't accomplish anything.

He was like a guy with a credit score off 400 sitting across from the desk of a car dealers finance manager and didn't have the sense to ask for help.

Gaetz was cast from the mold and he'll soon be back in Florida nursing his wounds, just like Trump.

Appearing on MSNBC's Ali Velshi, former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance claimed the one thing that should keep Rep. Matt Gaetz (R- FL) up at night is if his close associate implicated in possible sex trafficking with him will flip on him in order to avoid a longer prison term.

According to Vance, Gaetz's friend Joel Greenberg is facing a slew of charges that would make him amenable to prosecutors looking to indict the sitting GOP congressman.

'"So at the moment, Joel Greenberg is charged with somewhere higher than 30 offenses, felonies right now," host Velshi began. "What do you think is happening right now? Is this an effort to put pressure on Greenberg to provide testimony or evidence against Gaetz?"

"Right now, it looks like Greenberg is the more culpable of the two," Vance replied. "He was involved in a great deal of conduct over a sustained period of time: false IDs, the trafficking issues, the sort of run-of-the-mill public corruption that someone at his level might engage in."

"It is possible, though, that if he's convicted at trial, in an effort to help himself and spend less time in prison, he might be convinced to cooperate against Gaetz and I expect that is one of the hammers prosecutors have over Gaetz's head right now," she added.
