Actually, it wasn't the 60's that started the empowerment for women, and feminists weren't the first group to try to empower women. That was the suffragettes way back at the turn of the 20th century. They were chaining themselves to fences and fighting for the right to vote, when Germaine Greer's mother was busily fighting for the right for a bedtime story.

In fact even when it came to women working in jobs, feminism wasn't the be-all and end-all of it, either. Truth be told, what caused that to happen was the second world war. With all the men being enlisted, someone was needed to make the tanks, the planes, run the industries and do just about everything else. That someone, was women. And they absolutely loved it! Women engineers, women factory floor workers, women... you name it, they did it. And extremely well.

That situation was reversed to some degree after the war, but naturally, having tasted the freedom of being able to do whatever they wanted, That genie wasn't about to be put back in it's bottle. And rightly so.

Feminism came about in the 60's, and caught hold of a massive social and economic revolution going on at the time. What with the Black Panthers and black power, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, anti-war revolutionaries and freedom loving, drug taking, long hair growing hippies, that decade was a cultural volcano. Feminism, in that era was allowed freedom, as was the gay movement, lesbian movement, and just about everything else that pissed on, or pissed off, the establishment.

Is feminism dead? Absolutely. Every bit as dead as the black panthers and hippies. There are remnants here and there of all of them still active, but that's about it. If you doubt that, ask yourselves the last time any of you went to a consciousness-raising feminist meeting. Anybody?

No, of course you haven't. It was part of it's time. It served a purpose: To make women aware of who and what they were, and to promote and encourage equality. To make every woman think "Anything a man can do, not only can I do, but I should be allowed to do - even if I don't want to do it!"

Is the legacy of feminism still alive though? Again, Absolutely. Ask yourself how long a male chauvinist would last in the company of women nowadays. Women have the confidence and self belief to stand tall and say "I am an equal - and you'd better damn well respect that!"

I have highest regard and respect for women. I always have had. I seek out intelligent, deep women, women with life experience and wisdom, and whenever I need insight, advice or information, those are the sources I turn to first. I've learned so much about life, love, and everything under the sun, thanks to women. And, just as they consider themselves (rightly) my equal, so I consider myself theirs. There's no war of the sexes with me. Just a mutual respect of each others abilities and skills, and a constant exchange of information.

I think one day, man and woman will be smart enough and evolved enough to stop fighting as to who's best. And realize, they both are.

As Stumbly so wisely said, there are no real differences. Men can do anything women can do, from running a home, to changing a baby. Likewise women can do anything men can do, including running their own business, or going out and getting totally drunk with her female friends at a bar.

It's time both sexes grew up, realized that male and female are interchangable, and united. We don't need feminism. We don't need chauvinism. We need unity, two working in harmony, as one.

I think schools should teach both sexes to truly understand, accept and respect the other... and not just that, but whatever sexual persuasion or skin tone you have too. Maybe then, we'll have a world where children can grow up, knowing that, whatever they are, it doesn't matter.

Because they are loved, accepted, and respected... for being who they are... rather than what they are.
