We have this in the west, you know, we're not Iran or Saudi Arabia.

Pretty much all lifes essentials have risen far above inflation since the 50s.

 

Well here we go again.. this merrygoround is makin' me dizzy as a dizzy thing from the planet dizz..

The way I see it is this:

1. As a woman I am automatically a member of the human race. and as such, shouldn't HAVE to stand and fight for my right to be treated as equal to my male counterparts.
2. I don't believe that the cost of todays goods is in direct line with inflation costs since the 1950's.. however.. I DO believe that the advent of higher national debt.. the dwindling reserves of natural resources and the amount of 'wars' 'skirmishes' and such can attribute to the rise we've seen.

If you look at the image of feminists put out by some men.. then we are all butch, hairy, men hating lesbians.. and that is just soo bloody far from the truth that it's insulting!

TCL.. mebbe you should go look at what feminism has acheived for the female gender since the 1800's to get a better idea of what feminism stands for.. for the right to be considered EQUAL.. not below.. not above.. men..

The Fuckin' Pope.. you and TCL should get together and read up on feminism.. and you should also go looking into inflation and the rising costs of living since the turn of the 20th Century.. maybe then you'd have a better outlook on why it is your household can only operate on two incomes.. not one..

 

Ok first off, if you are NOT American, why are you talking about AMERICA in the 1950s? That's where society was different, AMERICA.

Second, I read this entire thread, and every insult thrown, and you threw the first one when you started losing ground in your "argument".

Women working did not change prices and the average cost per household, THE MARKET AND ECONOMY DID. So your argument holds no truth, and you're not discussing at all, you're namecalling and arguing because you're wrong.

Like Kimi said, as far as prices between now and the 50s, they're pretty much the same when you factor in prices over time, job wages, real estate, etc.

And people, keep religion the fuck out of this, I'm tired of seeing religion bashed in every single thread. You wonder why I call you ignorant

 

Baller, if you knew anything about the history of feminism you would know that the struggle for women's rights was only needed because of religion's stance that women are not equal to men. One can not have a serious discussion about the issue without taking religion in to account.

Only thing my religion doesn't allow women to do nowadays is be a preist, and that's only the Catholic Church, and because of tradition.

SOCIETY took the stance that women were unequal to men, not religion. Women fought society in America to get their rights, not the Church.

I don't think so, sweetie...by almost any measure, the standard of living, at least of Americans, has RISEN since 1950. We have bigger houses, more cars, more luxury goods. How would that have been possible if costs for essentials had risen faster than wages?

Nobody on the other side of this argument has presented me with any credentials demonstrating their training in economics. I at least took a course or two.

As far as the debt...that's another phenomenon that has no correlation with women's participation in the work force.

 

It doesn't take a blind man to see that America's economy is soon come to a crashing halt.

I can only wonder at what the world wide effects of that situation might be.

The crash of the World Bank will have an effect on everyone.......male and female alike.

Richard Dryfuss (yes, the actor) got a degree, I think his MS, in Economics from...Oxford? and he gave a very impassioned speech on the importance of understanding this fundamental science on an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher. I don't know if it's available for download or viewing via HBO.com or youtube, but they offer up all his shows free in podcast form on iTunes (it's how I listened in Korea) and it was a great bit. I've never taken a course in it myself, which is why I have refrained from commented on this particular aspect of the conversation, but from listening to that bit by Dryfuss I got the idea that Economics really touches on just about everything we do.

last time I checked, religion doesn't do bad things, PEOPLE do, who aren't the least bit in charge of religion. The only examples of religion doing things bad on a mass level were HUNDREDS of years ago, and had NOTHING to do with you. I fail to see how religion has supposedly slighted you so much that it's automatically evil. Seems to me you provoke it a lot, especially if you act the way you do on here towards people in real life

The Church's abuse of women is just a small issue in the grand scheme of things.

Maybe you missed the whole priest abuse scandal and how the hush money paid out by the Vatican has nearly bankrupted the church? The abuse most likely goes back hundreds of years, involving hundreds or thousands of priests and untold number of innocent children. And your venerable institution merely tries to sweep it under the rug, quietly transferring the priests from one parish to another, doing all it can to keep the priests from seeing the inside of a prison cell and making the abused children and their families sign agreements that they will never ever talk about it again or face the full wrath of the church.

Or we can talk about how the Catholic church withholds education about contraception and other forms of birth control from third world countries with rampant AIDS problems thus fostering the spread of this terminal disease and causing the death and suffering of who knows how many thousands or millions of people.

Or we could talk about the concession of the Holocaust, that's always a big one. Or their hand in the slave trade.

Which one would you prefer?

You will always have good people doing good things and bad people doing bad things but for good people to do bad things it takes religion.

And, incidentally, I first heard about the coach story on CBS news, but when I googled it for you to read that was one of the top links.

You're a Christian apologist, baller and the reason you have to keep apologizing or making excuses for these things is because they do so much that needs apologizing for.
