Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Wednesday disputed Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) after he suggested that the U.S. military is practicing critical race theory.

Gaetz confronted Austin about the academic theory during a hearing before the House Armed Services Committee.

According to the Florida Republican, critical race theory is the "number one concern" of military officers.

"I've heard those sentiments most frequently from units that are majority-minority," Gaetz claimed. "How should the Department of Defense think about critical race theory?"

"I don't know what the issue of critical race theory is," Austin replied. "We do not teach critical race theory. We don't embrace critical race theory. And I think that's a spurious conversation. We are focused on extremist behaviors and not ideology, not people's thoughts, not people's political orientation."

"And thanks for your anecdotal input," he continued. "But I would say that I've gotten ten times that amount of input -- 50 times that amount of input on the other side that has said, 'We're glad to have had the ability to have a conversation without ourselves and our leadership.'"

Gaetz interrupted: "It may be that you're receiving that input in the ratios you describe because it was your directive. It may be people are concerned about criticizing your decision."

The congressman then accused Austin of "hiring a critical race theorist" as an adviser.

"This is the first I've ever heard [Bishop Garrison] being described as a critical race theorist," Austin responded. "Let me just share one thing you brought up, Congressman, about the input that comes to me. I trust my leadership from top to bottom that they will give me fair and balanced and unvarnished input."

"And for you to say people are telling me what I want to hear, I get it," he added. "You know, maybe they are telling you what you want to hear."

Matt Gaetz tried to delete a tweet saying the FBI should be defunded — it just drew more attention to it

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) isn't having a very good press day this Wednesday. This morning, news of Gaetz being schooled by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spread across the web. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley was even more annoyed, bringing down the right-wing think tank-created culture war issue of "critical race theory."

But then things got worse. VICE News quoted Gaetz, "If Democrats want to defund the police, they should start with the FBI." He then deleted it in about one minute.


Gaetz's spokesperson claimed that the congressman "felt it appropriate to remove a jocular tweet taken from a speech some time ago because he takes oversight of the FBI so seriously." It's unclear why Gaetz made the statement, to begin with, if he takes his role so seriously.

Gaetz's office then demanded that VICE News use the full statement from his office or not at all. The rambling statement went off on a rant about the FBI investigating Chinese labs and a Chinese defector.

A search of the quote, "If Democrats want to defund the police, they should start with the FBI," doesn't appear anywhere online linked to a speech from Gaetz. So, if he's said it before it was ignored by every newspaper, cable news outlet, campaign observer, Twitter follower and more. Without any evidence of his previously having said it, it's unclear when Gaetz made the comment and where.

Regardless, it isn't a good look given Gaetz is being investigated by the FBI for his possible role in illegal actions by his close friend Joel Greenberg. He recently pleaded guilty to lesser charges in a deal with prosecutors.

While Gaetz deleted the tweet, it is now being spread across Twitter because he deleted it so quickly after posting it.

Congressman Matt Gaetz attacked the U.S. Armed Forces on Wednesday, suggesting America doesn't win wars because of Generals like the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley. General Milley, who has worn an Army uniform since before the Florida Republican congressman was born, is being heralded for delivering a strong and intelligent rebuke of Gaetz's attack on critical race theory and criticizing the U.S. Military for being "woke."

Gen. Milley told Gaetz during a House committee hearing that he would like to better understand both critical race theory and “white rage," which he implied was connected to Donald Trump's January 6 insurrection.

“I personally find it offensive that we are accusing the United States military, our general officers, our commissioned and noncommissioned officers of being quote 'woke,' or something else because we're studying some theories that are out there," Milley told Gaetz.

Gaetz, whose district has a huge military presence including one of the largest air bases in the world, did not wait long to strike back, attacking General Milley:

According to a report from the Daily Beast's Matt Fuller, very few House Republicans are willing to go on the record about the multiple investigations swirling around Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), with the exception of a few who reside on the extreme rightwing fringe of the party.

With Gaetz courting controversy on an almost daily basis -- including now taking on the Pentagon -- House members confronted about the allegations he has been paying underaged girls for sex are unwilling to talk about him.

According to Fuller, "... all around Gaetz, members of Congress—Democrats and Republicans—are pretending nothing is wrong, that their colleague isn't credibly accused of paying for sex with a minor, " adding, "More broadly on the GOP side, the affected ignorance is stunning. When The Daily Beast asked Republicans about Gaetz staying on his committees, the usually talkative Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) sharply said he didn't have any comment to make about Gaetz 'one way or the other.'"

Reps. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), David Schweikert (R-AZ), and Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN) also begged off, with Fleischmann remarking, "That's something that every member of Congress has to deal with on an individual level, so I prefer really not to comment. I have not followed that situation."

One lawmaker willing to go on the record is Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) who backed Gaetz remaining in his committee posts and dismissed questions about his future saying he doesn't see anything controversial about his remaining while the investigations continue.

One GOP lawmaker, who didn't want their name used, claimed no one is comfortable talking about Gaetz, with Fuller reporting, "we would be hard-pressed to find any 'sane member of the conference' who would defend Gaetz.

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA), on the other hand, had no problem talking about the Florida Republican bluntly stating, "It's embarrassing. It just degrades the entire institution and confirms the worst perceptions people have of Congress and politicians, when a schmuck like that continues to hold the office and sit in a committee room," before adding Gaetz is a "world-class sleazeball."

"I have no doubt that he will not be in Congress for long," he added.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) suggested recently that Russia has a military advantage over the United States because the country's white people don't feel guilty about racism.

In comments made to The Spectator, Gaetz seemed to be annoyed by Gen. Mark Milley, who schooled the congressman in a hearing last month about the importance of studying critical race theory (CRT) and "white rage."

"Nobody in Russia is quivering over their 'white rage' — whatever that is,' Gaetz said. "In China, they spend money modifying submarines, not the genders of service-members."

"And I'm going to battle against this," he continued. "Only a Benedict Arnold would surrender the Pentagon to the Woketopia without a fight."

Gaetz added: "We should leave the CRT curriculum books in Kabul when the last US plane pulls up its landing gear on the way out.

Joel Greenberg, the disgraced former "wingman" for Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), pledged to cooperate with federal law enforcement officials earlier this year when he pleaded guilty to a bevy of charges -- and he apparently has a lot to say.

According to CNN's Jim Sciutto, Greenberg has asked for a delay in his prison sentence "so he can continue to speak to investigators in a sprawling sex trafficking probe."

This past May, Greenberg pleaded guilty to sex trafficking, wire fraud, identity theft, and other offenses as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Greenberg over the last year had been hit with 33 different criminal charges, so pleading guilty to only six will almost certainly reduce the time he'll have to spend in prison.

While no further indictments have so far come from Greenberg's cooperation, multiple reports have claimed that he will likely implicate Gaetz, who reportedly could be charged as early as this month.

A Florida judge granted a request by former Seminole County tax collector Joel Greenberg to delay his sentencing while he continues cooperating with federal investigators.

The 36-year-old Greenberg will now be sentenced Nov. 18 after pleading guilty to six crimes, including sex trafficking of a child, identity theft, bribery of a public official and stalking, as part of an agreement to testify against others -- such as Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) -- allegedly involved in a sex trafficking ring, reported the Orlando Sentinel.

"Said cooperation, which could impact his ultimate sentence, cannot be completed prior to the time of his sentencing," said his attorney Fritz Scheller in the request.

Greenberg had been scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 19 but his attorney asked for a 90-day delay while he cooperates with investigators, and prosecutors have said they would recommend fewer years than the 12-year statutory minimum for his crimes if he provides substantial assistance.
