Republican-controlled states have higher murder rates than Democratic ones: study

Republican politicians routinely claim that cities run by Democrats have been experiencing crime waves caused by failed governance, but a new study shows murder rates are actually higher in states and cities controlled by Republicans.

“We’re seeing murders in our cities, all Democrat-run,” former President Donald Trump asserted at a March 26 rally in Georgia. “People are afraid to go out.”

In February, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., blamed Democrats for a 2018 law that reduced some federal prison sentences — even though it was signed by Trump after passing a GOP-controlled Congress. “It’s your party who voted in lockstep for the First Step Act that let thousands of violent felons on the street who have now committed innumerable violent crimes,” Cotton said during a speech in the Senate.

Last December, Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, told Fox News viewers, “America’s most beautiful cities are indeed being ruined by liberal policies: There’s a direct line between death and decay and liberal policies.”

But a comparison of violent crime rates in jurisdictions controlled by Democrats and Republicans tells a very different story. In fact, a new study from the center-left think tank Third Way shows that states won by Trump in the 2020 election have higher murder rates than those carried by Joe Biden. The highest murder rates, the study found, are often in conservative, rural states.

The study found that murder rates in the 25 states Trump carried in 2020 are 40% higher overall than in the states Biden won. (The report used 2020 data because 2021 data is not yet fully available.) The five states with the highest per capita murder rate — Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Alabama and Missouri — all lean Republican and voted for Trump.

There are some examples of states Biden won in 2020 that also have high per capita murder rates, including New Mexico and Georgia, which have the seventh- and eighth-highest murder rates, respectively. And there are Trump-supporting states with low murder rates, such as Idaho and Utah. Broadly speaking, the South, and to a lesser extent the Midwest, has more murders per capita than the Northeast, interior West and West Coast, the study found.

Those findings are consistent with a pattern that has existed for decades, in which the South has had higher rates of violent crime than the nation as a whole.

“We as criminologists have known this for quite some time,” Jennifer Ortiz, a professor of criminology at Indiana University Southeast, told Yahoo News. “States like Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama have historically had high crime rates.”

Criminologists say research shows higher rates of violent crime are found in areas that have low average education levels, high rates of poverty and relatively modest access to government assistance. Those conditions characterize some portions of the American South.

“They are among the poorest states in our union,” Ortiz said of the Deep South. “They have among the highest rates of child poverty. They are among the least-educated states. They are among the states with the highest levels of substance abuse. All of those factors contribute to people engaging in criminal behavior.”

“I thought that was a very good study,” Richard Rosenfeld, a professor of criminology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and former president of the American Society of Criminology, told Yahoo News about the Third Way report. “In Republican states, states with Republican governors, crime rates tend to be higher. I’m not certain that’s related to the fact that the governor is a Republican, but it’s a fact nonetheless.”

(While the Third Way study divided states by presidential vote in 2020, using gubernatorial party affiliation leads to similar results because most states have recently chosen the same party for governor and for president. Based on presidential vote, eight of the 10 states with the highest murder rates lean Republican, versus seven of the top 10 if one uses the governor’s party.)

Although murder rates tend to be highest in the South, the biggest increases in 2020 were found in the Great Plains and Midwest, according to Third Way. The largest jumps were in Wyoming (91.7% higher than in 2019), South Dakota (69%), Wisconsin (63.2%), Nebraska (59.1%) and Minnesota (58.1%). Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska all voted for Trump and have Republican governors. Wisconsin and Minnesota voted for Biden and are led by Democrats.

Few large cities are governed by Republicans — only 26 of the 100 largest U.S. cities have Republican mayors — making apples-to-apples comparisons difficult. But cities that do have Republican mayors do not have lower murder rates than similarly sized Democratic-led cities, the study found.

Some experts warn against the impulse to use crime data to score quick political points.

“Being a Republican or Democratic state or city is correlated with many other issues,” David Weisburd, a professor of criminology and executive director of the Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy at George Mason University, wrote in an email to Yahoo News. “That means that the murder rate may be due to the state being Republican, or it may be due to the fact that Republican states have many other risk factors related to crime or murder rates. Even with a very comprehensive modeling of all of these factors, it is very difficult to get a valid causal result for explaining crime rates.”

That argument cuts both ways, however. Weisburd also thinks the claims of Trump and other Republicans who say Democrats have caused a crime wave in the cities and states they govern are unfounded. “I don't think this argument can be supported no matter which way you go,” Weisburd said.

Murder rates in the U.S. rose dramatically in 2020 from record lows, and the increases are similar across states — regardless of partisan preference. For homicides in 2020, Third Way found a 32.2% uptick in Trump-backing states versus a 30.8% rise in those that voted for Biden. Some states with large cities, such as New York and Pennsylvania, saw larger-than-average increases: New York went up 47% and Pennsylvania is up 39%. But the largest increases were in rural, Republican-led states, including Montana (+84%) and South Dakota (+81%).

The higher national murder rate is naturally causing public concern, although violent crime does remain far below its early 1990s high point. “Using the FBI data, the violent crime rate fell 49% between 1993 and 2019,” from 757 incidents per 100,000 people to 379 per 100,000, the Pew Research Center noted last November. Between 2019 and 2020, the murder rate jumped from 6 homicides per 100,000 people to 7.8 homicides per 100,000, but that was still 22% below the rate in 1991 of 10 homicides per 100,000.

That's because in those states, violent lawless Democrats control the crime riddled cities...

Analysis: Democrats at the helm of 11 of the 15 deadliest cities in U.S.

The cities largely run by Democrats are St. Louis, Baltimore, New Orleans, Detroit, Cleveland, Newark, Chicago, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and Pittsburgh.

All but three cities on the list have Democratic mayors. Democratic district attorneys are also in charge of prosecution in 12 of the 15 cities.

Progressive prosecutors, which hold office in nearly all of the 15 cities, have come under fire lately for weakening their prosecutorial standards.

Cook County, Ill. State's Attorney Kim Foxx has reportedly dismissed thousands of felonies that would have been pursued in the past, according to the Marshall Project.

Murder rate per capita? Or overall murder rate?

Attempted Robbery Gone Wrong Proves Gun Rights Are Women’s Rights
A CLOSED-CIRCUIT VIDEO OF AN ATTEMPTED ROBBERY GONE WRONG PROVES ONCE AGAIN THAT WOMEN’S RIGHTS ARE DIRECTLY CORRELATED WITH GUN RIGHTS.

A closed-circuit video from 2019 has been making the rounds on social media recently. The video shows a man stopping his car, getting out, and approaching a woman who promptly shoots him. Although this is not a new video, and also not quite what it seems, it still demonstrates how women’s rights are strengthened by gun rights.

Footage Demonstrates That Gun Rights Are Women’s Rights
The incident occurred in March of 2019, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In the video, a car enters the security footage and stops, just as a young woman walks down the street. Immediately after stopping, a man exits the vehicle and approaches the woman, reaching out for her. It is hard to tell from the video whether he is reaching for her or her purse. However, it is clear that his intentions are nefarious in nature.

Unfortunately for the would-be robber/abductor, the woman he targeted was carrying a concealed pistol. As he approaches, the woman backs up, draws her pistol, and shoots center of mass—immediately dropping the assailant. As luck would have it, he picked an off-duty Military Police officer.

There are not many details about the video, other than the video itself. However, it has been making rounds on social media, sparking new conversations.

Wyoming Enacts the Second Amendment Protection Act (SAPA)
Although it is the federal government’s job to protect the Constitution, it is instead trying to dismantle it. As we recently reported, even part of President Biden’s State of the Union Address took aim at the Second Amendment. It is a scary time when a country’s own government targets the rights of its citizens.

Fortunately, we see states taking steps to protect their citizens from a federal government not concerned with their best interests. The signing of the Second Amendment Protection Act in Wyoming is more evidence that states reject federal anti-gun legislation.

According to the Laramie Boomerang, “The bill passed during the Wyoming Legislature’s recently concluded 2022 budget session. It is designed to protect Second Amendment rights, as well as prevent federal regulation of firearms, accessories, magazines and ammunition. Sheriffs, officers, gun rights advocates and lawmakers said the legislation was needed as President Joe Biden’s administration pushes for such control.”

The bill replaces a first draft called the Second Amendment Preservation Act. Some argued the original bill would put members of law enforcement at risk of civil actions by citizens. However, others argue that the final bill would be up to local prosecuting attorneys to enforce the bill in court.

According to KGAB AM, “Supporters of the Second Amendment Preservation Act–Senate File 87– wanted private citizens to be able to take legal action against local or state agencies who violate the Second Amendment. They say they have little confidence in one governmental office reigning in another local or state agency, especially at the local level where the two agencies may have an ongoing working relationship.”

    The Second Amendment Protection Act
In short, the bill prohibits public officers from enforcing, administering, or cooperating with an unconstitutional act of any kind. In addition, it sets one of the harshest punishments for a violation in the nation. Specifically, anyone who violates the act is guilty of a misdemeanor. As a result, it’s punishable by imprisonment for up to a year, a fine of up to $2,000, or both.

    The act says in part:

“(a) This state and all political subdivisions of this state are prohibited from using any personnel or funds appropriated by the legislature of the state of Wyoming or any other source of funds that originated within the state of Wyoming to enforce, administer or cooperate with any unconstitutional act, law, treaty, executive order, rule or regulation of the United States government that infringes on or impedes the free exercise of individual rights guaranteed under the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.”

The act does not limit or restrict an officer from providing assistance to federal authorities. Likewise, it does not prevent them from accepting federal funds for law enforcement purposes. As a result, the act is the culmination of efforts from law enforcement, gun owners, the Shooting Sports Foundation, and Second Amendment supporters.

Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police Executive Board President and Rock Springs Police Chief Dwane Pacheco told the Laramie Boomerang, “We stand strong together to hold ourselves and our officers accountable to not enforce, administer or cooperate with any unconstitutional acts. This is one of the most important legislative actions on a personal and professional level that I have seen in my career.”

As the federal government pushes to do away with our constitutional rights, states have to push back. It is the only way a constitutional republic can survive.

African American Women Represent Largest Rise in Gun Ownership
While many Democrats purport to fight for minority groups, their actions often reflect the opposite. As we recently reported, Democrat-run cities are surging in violent crime. Many reports show that this typically has a negative effect on the African American community. For this reason, many are becoming first-time gun owners.

However, the statistics paint a difficult picture for Democrats to overcome. According to a report from the NSSF, over 33 percent of first-time buyers were women. Likewise, 44 percent of retailers saw an increase in African Americans purchasing firearms. In another report from 2020, African American men and women presented the highest firearm sale increase, up 58%.

Although the rise covers both men and women, according to the National African American Gun Association, women outnumber men. By a long shot.

According to the NAAGA website, “In 2012, the Pew Research Center conducted a national survey and found that only 29% of African-American households viewed guns as positive. In 2015, that same survey showed a dramatic jump to 59% where now a majority of African-American families see guns as not only a positive thing but, in many cases, a necessity.”

They go on to say, “Single Black women are now one of the fastest-growing demographic groups in the African-American community who are purchasing guns for protection.”

Thomas Cunningham, who opened a NAAGA chapter in Columbus, told NBC 4 Columbus that “of the 2,500 African Americans who came through classes last year, only five were men.”

He went on to tell the news outlet, “Right now, gun ownership in our community has risen, probably quadruple the numbers, because of all the unfortunate events.”

    Round Table
NBC 4 Columbus recently hosted a round table on the topic of gun ownership, with four African American women. The women make up multiple walks of life, with one in the legal community, a nurse, an entrepreneur, and founding principal of a school.

When asked why they are members of a gun club, two answered and their answers mirrored the pro-gun argument succinctly.

Rosalind Phipps-Jones, 42, answered, “Me being an entrepreneur, I wanted to protect myself. [So,] I chose to go and get a gun because I’m out late at night. I wanted to protect myself so that I don’t live in fear, I’m living in awareness.”

However, Alexis Wymer, 34, sides with safety, “I lost a cousin to improper handling of a firearm, and he was a teenager. I lost a high school friend due to the same thing. And it’s just something that continues to happen in the Black community.”

She finished with, “Be properly informed if you’re going to make the decision to own a firearm. Understand the regulations surrounding owning a firearm and handling a firearm.”

    Ohio Approves Permitless Carry Bill
The conversation follows on the heels of the new Ohio legislation, eliminating the concealed carry permit requirement.

According to another report from NBC 4, “Gov. Mike DeWine signed into law Monday a bill that would eliminate a concealed carry permit requirement for Ohioans 21 and over who are legally eligible to own and carry a firearm in the state, according to a news release from DeWine’s office. With the governor’s signature, the law will take effect in 90 days.”

When asked about the legislation, there were mixed feelings. However, Alexis channeled the “armed society is a polite society” adage very well:

“The more free people are to conceal carry, the higher possibility of a pause…to think: This person could be carrying. I don’t know what this person’s mental state is. Do I want to provoke this person in any kind of confrontational manner? That creates the opportunity for people to take a few steps back and do a mental check.”

Whatever the case, midterms are coming up and Democrats keep demonstrating how tone-deaf they are. Their cities are becoming crime-ridden hellscapes and they insist on taking firearms out of the hands of law-abiding citizens.

Although statistically, the African American community dominantly votes Democrat, actions like this could cost them dearly in the midterms.

That is quite the laugh when he says that people should have training before being able to buy a gun. Only six states have any requirements for some kind of training and the NRA and "Second Amendment" advocates are trying to get all state gun laws including training requirements struck down.

But see, shooter wasn't talking about the law, or what the law says was he?
Shooter was talking about what ought to be if one wants to own a gun.

Theres the fundamental difference between a despicable and a deplorable.

A despicable wants government involvement and control of all things.

A deplorable wants individual responsibility over government control.

Missouri SWAT Officer’s Stray Bullet Kills 2-Year-Old Girl

A Joplin SWAT officer accidentally killed a 2-year-old girl as he opened fire on the toddler’s father in Baxter Springs, Missouri, police confirmed Monday. The little girl, Clesslynn Crawford, died after police responded to a call about a domestic disturbance on March 26, between her father, Eric Crawford, and her mother, Taylor D. Shutte. When police got to their camping trailer, Shutte tried to escape through the front door, and Crawford allegedly shot her multiple times in the back. His shots prompted police to shoot at him, and after exchanging multiple rounds of gunfire, one of the bullets struck Clesslynn, killing her. Shutte died at the scene from her wounds, while Crawford died from an apparent self-inflicted bullet to the head. “This is a horrific outcome to what had already started as a very tragic incident,” police Chief Sloan Rowland said in the statement. “We ask that you pray for the victims and everyone involved.”

2-year-old picks up gun and accidentally kills 4-year-old sister in Pennsylvania, police say

    The Philadelphia Inquirer
    April 05, 2022

PHILADELPHIA — A 4-year-old girl was killed by her 2-year-old brother in an accidental shooting outside a Chester gas station Tuesday morning, police said. The child, whose name was not released, was found shot just before 11 a.m. inside a vehicle parked at the Eagle Save Mart at Ninth and Kerlin streets in Chester, according to investigators. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Investigators believe the 2-year-old had been handling a gun left unsecured inside the vehicle while the gun’s owner was inside the gas station’s mini-mart. An adult who was pumping gas ...

The Government of Ukraine is Requesting Aid from the Firearm Industry in the United States
As we recently reported, the government of Ukraine has been handing out firearms to citizens willing to defend the country. However, that can take a serious toll on munition supplies. Not to mention the number of foreign fighters coming to the aid of Ukraine.

According to a Washington Post report, “Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in a news conference on Sunday that the number of foreigners who have signed up to fight for Ukraine in its war against Russia is “approaching 20,000,” and that the volunteers are from 52 countries.”

Likewise, a report on the New York Post states, “Ukraine’s Defense Ministry also put out a call for foreign volunteers on Facebook, asking for applicants with combat experience who have ‘citizenship other than Ukrainian, but … are standing with Ukraine against [the] Russian invasion.’”

Consequently, supporting this kind of effort requires a lot of munitions. As a result, the Ukrainian Embassy is requesting donations of the following rifles, pistols, and ammunition:

    • 7.62х39 mm
    • 7.62×51 mm
    • 7.62x54mm
    • .308 WIN
    • 5.45х39 mm
    • 5.56х45 mm
    • Sniper rifles chambered in .308 WIN or 7.62х51 mm and ammunition (including bipod and scope)
      • If donating a non-.308 “sniper type” rifle, e.g., .338 Lapua or similar, Ukraine requests that manufacturers provide ammunition with the rifle.
    • Pistols and ammunition chambered in 9х19 mm
    • Extra magazines
    • Spare parts
