I think maybe I just assumed people knew me better than they actually do. Maybe that's a good lesson.

 

Forced sterilization seems a little harsh. But then again, in my more exasperated moments, I find myself wishing there was such a thing as a parenting license. Not sure how one would enforce it though.

I'm all for birth control, population reduction, parenting classes (I can't believe or stress enough how much needed and helpful they are) adoption and more stringent child protection laws.

But before we turn in to a fascist totalitarian society I've got a much easier solution which we can learn from Native Americans.

See if you can feature this. You're sitting in a gym full of people and a little toddler suddenly feels lost or even sad. The nearest person (adult or older child) to the toddler reaches out and holds and comforts the child while they begin the immediate search for the child's parent or family members. Several may jump to the child's immediate aid.

Or a toddler suddenly wonders out on the basketball court. The game immediately stops until the toddler is coaxed off the basketball court. Not jerked off the court, not yelled off the court, not even picked up and rushed off the court. Instead the toddler is encouraged off the court and then play resumes.

It might sound strange to us but not to Native Americans who see children as something incredibly precious and know it takes a village to raise a child. That's were we are making our mistake. We don't really care about the happiness and comfort and well being of the child. We just want to punish the child and their parents.

Besides the obvious moral and ethical questions over individual freedom (which is still paramount in a 'free' society), the potential for mis-use and permanent damage is simply too high a risk in comparison to the relatively small societal advantage you might gain. You want to push "un-earned" baby-making underground and divide society even more dramatically than it already is . . . I think you've found a fine way to do it.

Explain to me again why this is being discussed in a remotely serious way? I think you've got your hands full just managing your hardline atheistic world-view, eh?

 

As you may have read somewhere in this interminable thread, I made a half-serious proposal along those lines. But it wasn't widely supported.

Who decides

The problem with this whole thread, is the question of who decides? Every special interest group has people they do not like? Every religion has people they do not like. Bringing this home to the people that frequent this site. Do you think the fundamentalist religious people (and I don't mean just Christians, other religions think porn is a sin) want our kind of people to reproduce? In most cases the only thing that ties the peeps of this site together is our open attitude about matters sexual. Do you want to be told that you can not have kids because you like anal sex or because your into BDSM etc. On the surface Sterilization sounds like a good idea, but again

*laughing* Old Tool is right once in awhile...say 1 in 25. You should say it, it's good therapy.

 

This actually and literally gets people killed in my profession tenguy. Someone changes one thing on the rig but since the rig is actually a few thousand pieces of the same machine it has to have an effect somewhere else and sometimes that is literally deadly. So instead we have to use logical extension in our problem solving. In other words if I change this what effect will it have on not just the overall machine but the entire drilling operation. Just taking one thing at a time into account is a piss poor way to solve a problem.

No, it was a light-hearted topic, I said that before; it was slightly tongue-in-cheek. But it did take a more argumentative tone as it progressed. I also said I don't see this whole forced-sterilization thing as a real possibility, but if it was ever put forth, I would most likely support it, depending on the conditions.

People have a strange habit of ignoring or forgetting those parts of the things I've said, though.
