every society, even the most easy going democracy needs ground rules. order needs to be maintained. i believe the criminalization of incest should be one of them.

nature does also. that's why incestuously born children are less healthy and subjective to genetic malformations

Guess your not too liberal then, the crime of incest has been pretty much ignored in all western countries. Unless there are other circumstances, such as coercion, force, underage victims, the authorities have not proscecuted many cases in the last 25 years.

The claim that children born of incest are inferior has been largely disproven, unless they're the product of more than a few generations of incest.

 

Incest in nature has been around since the dawn of time. Most animal groups mate with related offspring. It doesn't always follow that their offspring will be malformed and less healthy. Indeed, often the strongest male and female will mate to produce strong offspring.

Bear in mind, also, the incest laws were introduced, primarliy, to reduce the incidents of (what were called at the time) sub-normal children. Health care back then wasn't a patch on what it is now, hence the high occurence of physically and mentally weak children...

I'm not suggesting that because we have better health care nowadays that we should scrap the incest laws! Good heavens, no! However, as others have said, if it occurs between consenting adults, I don't see the harm...

Many incestual relationships involve cousins, uncle/aunt & nephew/niece, adult brother/sister, adult parent/offspring, many of which occur when the participants are not cohabitating. To use the example you have, you stereotype incest as "HillyBilly" lore.

Incestual relationships know no socio-economic boundries.

 

6 billion people in the world why should brothers and sisters be having sex with each other? you see no social instability traits here? and the genetic issues?

First understand I do not advocate incest for personal reasons, however to condemn people who have formed a sexual relationship with a close relative is repulsive to me.

I am also not a homosexual, have no desire to engage in it, but I will not condemn those who do.

The only reason it appears that children are the victims more often, is because, when a particularly bad case comes to light, it's sensationalist fodder for the newspapers and other media, like the case that started this thread.

Incest is not new: not so many generations back our so-called 'noble' families actively engaged in incest in order to prolong the family blood-line...
