Ronald "Dick Head" Reagan tops my list as the worst presidents in history and probably always will. The reason for that is because he sat the stage for the Bush's and was the first one to begin ignoring the protections of the constitution and got the American public to think that was OK.

He's the one who started using the US Military for a world police force. He's the one who made it ok to outsource our jobs to third world countries. He's the one who acted as the original front man and actor for major us corporations and he's the one that elevated whaco Evangelicals to a place of prominence in the American political scene.

He's the one who managed to stack the Supreme Court with a Conservative majority, and he's also the one who committed the highest crimes and misdemeanors of any president in our history and got away with it scot free. And Ronald Reagan was also the one who proved any idiot can be president of the United States of America as long as they have the right handlers and PR people.

My friend, I lived through his reign, in fact served the military and was serving at the time of the Cuban Missle Crisis. Kennedy only cared about civil rights as far as it would carry his own cause. Look at the history of his daddy's money, look at the truth behind the Kennedy's and they make George Bush look pure and clean. Reading the history that is in print is one thing, living during his terrible reign is another. Kennedy was not shot due to his civil rights activity, I would be more inclined to believe it was a result of his illegal activities and the shame he brought on this country.

Doing a little rewrite of history there TJ. I was also alive during the Cuban missile crisis when Kennedy made the Soviets Blink first and opened the door to detaunte between the two nations including the famous Red Phone. I was there when he gave a tired nation new hope and put real effort behind the civil rights movement that Eisenhower started. I was also there when he was lied to by the CIA concerning Cuba and the Bay of Pigs invasion. And I was there when the Secret Service failed to protect him, most likely because he said during his next term he would splinter the CIA because it was no longer needed and had become a secret government within a government. I was also there when he sent the memo to his defense secretary Robert McNamara instructing him that when he got back from his trip to Dallas he wanted a list of all possible options concerning South Vietnam including "How to get the hell out of there."

That's why Kennedy was shot because he actually could see what needed to be done and surely would have been elected. In the meantime since you were living then I suppose you can tell me what George H. Bush was doing on the day Kennedy was killed. Well maybe not. We was working for the CIA stationed in Dallas Texas.

Actually, you could argue that the civil rights movement began with Truman, when he integrated the U.S. military. Not a popular stance at the time, as you might imagine.

As for the reasons for the asassination, your guess is as good as mine. It's only the official story that I find hard to swallow.

I can agree with that and now that I think about it, that was the first crack in the wall of segregation. And I have forgotten exactly what took place and who was responsible for it but after desegregating the Military there was a fairly health black press in existence that picked up the banner and began to champion the cause. If I have my history correct the government essentially put them out of business.

The irony of the collapse of the Soviet Union, which, by the way, I do NOT attribute to anything Ronald Reagan did, is that the right wing has been searching for a new bogey-man to take their place ever since, in order to justify having a military budget bigger than that of the rest of the world combined and keep the military-industrial complex fat and happy.

They seem to have found one in the so-called "Islamo-fascists".

    You may be right.

I happened to pay a visit to the Truman Library in Independence, MO a few years ago, and there's a section dealing with civil rights. Very interesting experience, if you're ever in the neighborhood.

Well, you know, if they hit oil or gas out there I might just make it.:)

Really though I think I would like to visit Truman's Library, if for nothing else than to see the actual headlines where it claimed Dewey had won the presidential election. I always get a kick out of that picture of Truman holding up the newspaper proclaiming Dewey the winner of the presidential election (based on a phone survey) and Truman saying "That ain't the way I heard it."

[IMG] New poll numbers show bad news for president Bush.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A new poll suggests that George W. Bush is the most unpopular president in modern American history.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Thursday indicates that 71 percent of the American public disapprove of how Bush his handling his job as president.

"No president has ever had a higher disapproval rating in any CNN or Gallup poll; in fact, this is the first time that any president's disapproval rating has cracked the 70 percent mark," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

"Bush's approval rating, which stands at 28 percent in our new poll, remains better than the all-time lows set by Harry Truman and Richard Nixon (22 percent and 24 percent, respectively) but even those two presidents never got a disapproval rating in the 70s," Holland added. "The previous all-time record in CNN or Gallup polling was set by Truman, 66 percent disapproval in January 1952."
CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider adds, "He is more unpopular than Richard Nixon was just before he resigned from the presidency in August 1974." President Nixon's disapproval rating in August 1974 stood at 67 percent.

    Ulysses S Grant

simple-minded drunkard, horribly inept administrator, an white house full of corruption (including a scandal wherein $3 million in cash was stolen from the US treasury  - they didn't even try to disguise it as "commerce" - just took it), anti-semite, endless string of fiscal mismangement, nearly caused the country to regress BACK into the civil war that was recently completed . . . other than being a recognizable name due to his participation in the war, had zero credentials for high office - this guy was the worst! :)

Oh God how it pains me to say this but you may have a point. Throw in his commission of George Armstrong Custer, and his treatment and violation of Native American treaties and we may have a winner I never even thought of.

Won't stop my Reagan/Bushes bashing but it would not be the first time I didn't allow facts to get in the way of my opinion.

I think with solid historical perspective, alot of the presidents immediately preceding and following Lincoln were singularly horrific. James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson (only president to be impeached and escaped from being tossed out of office by just one vote!) . . . Warren Harding was another doozey (although he was 1920s).

These guys operated in a way that would make the Bushes and/or Reagan look like stark amateurs - we created anti-corruption laws in direct response to some of their behaviors as presidents, YIKES! Not to say that either Bush or Reagan were tops as presidents, far from it, but I believe we have had much worse in our history.

The worst ever has to be FDR. He's the 1st pres, to "give" away money. The Supereme Court stopped him numerous times. What did he do - he stacked the deck, he loaded the Court to get what he wanted. He started the world's largest Ponzi scheme. Called Social Security.
Second worse was LBJ. With his "War on Poverty". It's cost us Billions! We're still losing by the way!!

Both Presidents spent our money to "BUY" votes for the Democrats to stay in Power!!

This kind of bullshit always just cracks me up. FDR and the New Deal brought the nation out of a depression that was starving people and nearly ruined the country. For one thing the most notorious crime spree in our history was spawned by the depression and it would not have taken much more for the country to turn into anarchy. And you know what I never figured people who care more for their money than they do for other humans would fair well in anarchy.

FDR also guided this nation through world war II and I sincerely you'd be even around let alone able to run off at the mouth if it was not for his leadership during the most dangerous time the world has seen.

And since I didn't even bother to check your profile I don't know how old you are but if you are old enough to remember what is was like before the War on Poverty you must be blind or stupid not to remember what it was like back then. The war on poverty actually put money in the bank and elevated the US to a much better country. And you think your money is more important than that. Bullshit. Those things also cost my money and I think every dime of it was well spent. Well except here lately when my social security contributions have been borrowed against by conservatives like Reagan and Bushes.

If you think those things were a waste of money just wait until you finally see what we bought with all the money spent on the War on Terror.
