First donors started abandoning DeSantis for his book banning and extreme anti abortion moves and now it looks like treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans in the legislature have had enough of DeSantis and his insane war with Disney for simply disagreeing with him.

'Fed-up' Florida GOP stall DeSantis agenda after he revives war on Disney

    April 20, 2023

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may be losing his grip over the Republican legislature at the end a session that has been spent pushing through his agenda.

GOP legislators have spent hours and hours debating and passing bills seemingly aimed at supporting his presidential ambitions, but his announcement that he wanted them to revive a war on Disney has privately frustrated many of his Republican allies, reported Politico.

“We’re not the party of cancel culture," said one GOP legislator. "We can’t keep doing this tit for tat.”

The whispers are growing louder in the statehouse, and Republicans are stalling some of his remaining legislative priorities as this year's session winds down, but so far none of them are willing to speak out publicly -- but at least one House Republican has told a former colleague that he was prepared to resign in frustration.

IN OTHER NEWS: Ralph Yarl shooter's grandson recalls him saying 'weird racist' things

“People are deeply frustrated,” said former state Sen. Jeff Brandes, a St. Petersburg Republican who's been in contact with his former colleagues during the session. “They are not spending any time on the right problems ... Most legislators believe that the balance of power has shifted too far and the Legislature needs to re-establish itself as a coequal branch of government.”

Many GOP legislators told Politico they still support DeSantis' priorities but complained their own bills have been set aside by legislative leaders working with the governor's office, and some of them said the Republican supermajority made it easier for leaders to ignore their complaints.

“I think our Republican colleagues are done,” said state Sen. Jason Pizzo, a South Florida Democrat. “I think they are fed up. There’s obviously still some true believers and there’s some very loyal and allegiant individuals and groups … They would like him to hurry up and announce and start focusing exclusively on other stuff other than here.”

This was actually pretty funny. Florida created their own gasoline shortage. They thought there might be one so people in Florida went rushing to the pumps to by more gas than usual and created an actual shrotage.

Ron DeSantis Went to South Carolina to Talk About Wokeness While His Florida Constituents Face a Fuel Shortage

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) traveled to South Carolina to speak about fighting “woke” while South Florida attempts to recover from last week’s severe flooding after torrential rains wreaked havoc on his home state.

As Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida noted several hours after DeSantis spoke on Wednesday, there is a fuel shortage in the region.

DeSantis, who is reportedly gearing up to announce a bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, has barnstormed across the country in early caucus and primary states such as Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina to burnish his conservative credentials – in large part by touting his war on “wokeness” in Florida.

“So, because the woke represents a war on truth, we have no other recourse but to wage a war on woke,” DeSantis told a gathering in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Wednesday. “We fight the woke in the schools. We fight the woke in the legislature. We fight the woke in the corporations. We will never ever surrender to the woke mob. Florida is where woke goes to die.”

The Florida governor’s speech in South Carolina did not manage to assist his constituents in their attempt to fill up their automobiles two states away.

In a video posted on Twitter Wednesday night, Rubio addressed the fuel crisis in South Florida. Though he did not mention DeSantis by name, his words could be understood to imply that the governor – and other officials in the state – should take action:

What’s happening right now in Miami and Fort Lauderdale with gasoline is crazy. You can’t find gasoline anywhere. This has been going on since Sunday. And they’re blaming it on the floods that impacted the port, and I know that was a factor. But it’s been four days. This should’ve been figured out by now, and they’re blaming it on consumer panic. Yeah, people are panicked because they gotta get to work. They got places to go, and you either can’t find gas or you have to wait in line for like two hours down the street where you’re probably gonna run out of gas while your waiting. So, yeah, people are panicked.

Rubio concluded by saying, “They gotta get this thing fixed. This is crazy.”

If DeSantis does run for president, he will face an uphill battle to topple former President Donald Trump, who has already declared his candidacy. Trump endorsed DeSantis for governor in 2018 and has taken credit for the governor’s rise to Republican political stardom.

A recent Fox News poll shows DeSantis trailing Trump by 30 points.

Hey Ron whatever happened to telling the federal government to stay out of Florida?

All DeSantis does is attack the federal government and despotically President Biden. But then turns right around and runs crying to President Biden to bail him out

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced he will request a Major Disaster Declaration for Broward County due to the catastrophic impacts of unprecedented flooding in Southeast Florida. If granted by the White House, a Major Disaster Declaration will provide a wide range of federal assistance programs for individuals and public infrastructure damaged by the floods.

On Monday, April 17 Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) Executive Director Kevin Guthrie requested Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA) teams deploy to Broward County for in-person PDAs. Joint State & Federal Teams have been in the field conducting damage assessments in impacted flood areas since Wednesday, April 19 and are estimated to complete physical assessments this weekend. In less than three days, teams have assessed over 1,300 homes and identified over 1,000 with major damages.

In response to the significant flooding in southeast Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis has also activated the Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program, making $5 million available for businesses impacted by flooding in Southeast Florida.

Businesses in Broward County, including sole proprietors, are eligible to apply. Florida’s small business owners in need of assistance are encouraged to visit FloridaJobs.org/EBL to apply for the Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program.

On April 13, less than 24 hours after flooding began, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 23-65 declaring a State of Emergency in Broward County. The State Emergency Response Team (SERT) remains in communication with areas impacted by devastating flooding and continues to deploy state resources and assistance as requested, including 1-million gallons of fuel in response to fuel distribution delays.

On Wednesday, April 12, the National Weather Service in Miami issued a Flash Flood Emergency for the areas of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. The heaviest rainfall was observed in Broward County, with 25.91 inches of rain measured at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. In addition to the extensive flooding, the National Weather Service in Miami confirmed areas of damage were consistent with two EF-0 tornadoes in Broward County. One tornado in Dania Beach produced metal siding and roof damage through a mobile home park, and the second tornado caused tree damage near West Hollywood

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ global trade mission this week is being funded by an organization that fellow Republicans have been trying to eliminate, raising questions about whether at least some taxpayer money will be used for his ambitious round-the-world trip to Japan, South Korea, Israel and the United Kingdom.

Launched in 1996, Enterprise Florida is a public-private state agency that aims to attract businesses to the state and promote it for economic development. It has been controversial for years — and it became a sticking point between Florida House Republicans and former Gov. Rick Scott, who viewed it as an effective way to create jobs. Back then, Enterprise Florida survived, but with less funding. Private donations have typically defrayed the cost of previous trips.

DeSantis continues to travel extensively outside Florida in advance of a potential 2024 presidential bid, and he has received some criticism, including from within the GOP, over his statements about foreign policy.

Donald Trump raised the funding issue in a post on his Truth Social platform Monday, saying DeSantis would be using taxpayer money for his "emergency Round the World tour … in order to up his game and see if he can remove the stain from his failing campaign."

“Perhaps he can, and perhaps he can’t, who really knows, but he’ll have plenty of time to think as he sits alone, on his tax payer funded airplane, riding it out and thinking, WHY???” Trump added about his likely competition in the 2024 presidential race.

In 2019, DeSantis traveled to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem with a delegation of nearly 100 people as part of a trade mission organized by Enterprise Florida.

“Just like the last one, [this trip] is not paid for at the taxpayers’ expense,” Bryan Griffin, the governor’s spokesperson, told NBC News.

But taxpayers did appear to foot at least some of the cost for the previous trip, according to the News Service of Florida, citing documents released by the state’s economic development agency. The six-day trip totaled $442,504, and private donors paid for more than two-thirds of the bill, the documents showed, but Florida taxpayers paid about $131,000, the news outlet reported.

That covered lodging, airfare and other travel costs for several state officials, as well as security provided by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The News Service of Florida also reported that a major source of the funding came from 12 private donors, including legal and lobbying firms, according to the same documents.

This time, too, private donors will be paying for at least part of the trip through Enterprise Florida, which has not disclosed where exactly the money will be coming from.

A spokesperson for Enterprise Florida declined to comment about the trade mission, instead referring questions to the governor’s office.

For years, some Republican legislators have railed against Enterprise Florida, arguing that the agency gives tax breaks to big businesses that really don’t need it and would have come to Florida anyway. The agency’s critics have said that it unfairly picks winners and losers — and that the money reserved for it could be better spent elsewhere.

Republican Florida House Speaker Paul Renner reiterated his desire to eliminate Enterprise Florida in an interview last week.

    says
“I don’t believe that taxpayer money should be used to fund corporate welfare,” he said. “We do not need to spend taxpayer dollars that could [instead] be spent on K-12 education or higher education.”

House and Senate budget negotiators are moving to eliminate funding for the program in the 2022-23 state budget, which is currently being hashed out.

A bill filed last month, HB 5, proposed shifting Enterprise Florida’s funding to the state Department of Economic Opportunity. Renner has said the funding for Enterprise Florida could be better used in other areas.

On Friday, the House Appropriations Committee voted 19-7 to approve the bill, which would also change the name of the Department of Economic Opportunity to the Department of Commerce. The bill would put the commerce secretary in charge of recruiting businesses.

And on Monday night, a Florida Senate budget negotiators agreed to the House position to remove $12 million in state funding for Enterprise Florida and remove the program from state law.

Renner said he opposes Enterprise Florida for the tax breaks it offers to only some corporations — for example, using taxpayer money to attract an Amazon headquarters in 2017. He argues that Florida’s lack of a state income tax and other business-friendly policies should be incentive enough to attract companies.

For some of DeSantis’ critics, the timing of the trip is suspect.

“It doesn’t square,” said Rep. Fentrice Driskell, the Democratic leader of the state House, adding that it was her “strong presumption” that at least some taxpayer money would be used given the number of government officials making the journey, in addition to the governor’s security detail. Driskell is questioning why Republicans aren’t opposed to DeSantis’ trip’s using an agency they want to dismantle.

“It’s very hypocritical,” she said. “They’re happy to change the rules when it suits them.”

In his interview, Renner defended DeSantis’ busy travel schedule in the middle of the legislative session.

“This is a governor that gets things done,” Renner said. “And the fact that he can get things done and still travel out of state — I’m sure it’s frustrating for people, but it doesn’t change the fact that this governor is fully engaged in the issues and affairs of the people of Florida.”

Some red states have laws that say if you hold an elected office and want to run for another elected office you have to resign. But those laws actually just apply to Democrats. Because if a Republican Senator or Governor wants to run for president they will just change the laws so they don't lose their job if they don't get elected.

Florida Lawmaker Introduces Amendment to Allow DeSantis to Run for President without Resigning

Ron DeSantis could run for president without resigning his post as governor of Florida, according to an election bill amendment filed Tuesday by a Republican state senator.

The amendment to the elections bill, SB7050, would clarify qualification requirements for political offices and exempt “Persons seeking the office of President or Vice President of the United States” from state rules that require political office holders to resign their current position in order to qualify as a candidate for another office.

The strike-all amendment was filed Tuesday afternoon by state Senator Travis Hutson, a Republican from northeast Florida, whom DeSantis endorsed last year.

Screenshot of amendment to resign-to-run law.
Florida law currently states that “No officer may qualify as a candidate for another state, district, county, or municipal public office if the terms or any part thereof run concurrently with each other without resigning from the office he or she presently holds.”

The office holder’s “resignation is irrevocable,” the law states, and it “must be submitted at least 10 days prior to the first day of qualifying for the office he or she intends to seek.”

The Florida House is expected to file its own version of the amendment later this week.

Republican leaders have expressed openness to amending the resign-to-run law since DeSantis won a landslide re-election victory in November. While he has not officially declared his candidacy, DeSantis is seen by many as the top Republican challenger to former president Donald Trump for the GOP presidential nomination.

DeSantis is expected to formally announce his candidacy after the 2023 legislative session wraps up early next month. In the meantime, Trump has been racking up endorsements from the state’s congressional delegation.

After the November election, state House Speaker Paul Renner and state Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, who both preside over Republican supermajorities, said they were on board with changing and clarifying the law.

“If an individual who is Florida governor is running for president, I think he should be allowed to do it,” Passidomo told reporters, according to Politico. “That’s a big honor and a privilege, so it is a good idea.”

Passidomo has also questioned if the law needs to be changed at all.

“In my view, it is already apparent that resign-to-run does not apply to presidential and vice presidential candidates,” Passidomo said in a prepared statement, according to the Florida Politics website. “Under our law, the timeline for resigning is entirely based on qualifying. Presidential and vice presidential candidates do not have to qualify. Presidential and vice presidential nominees (other than write-in candidates) are decided by their respective political parties at national conventions. Currently, they do not have to complete a candidate’s oath, pay a qualifying fee, fill out a financial disclosure, or turn in any of the other qualifying documentation and paperwork required of candidates for other offices.”

Florida lawmakers have changed the law in the past. In 2008, lawmakers changed it so then-governor Charlie Crist – a Republican at the time – could be considered as a running mate for then-GOP nominee John McCain. Lawmakers reinstated the resign-to-run law in 2018.

A carve-out for an office holder whose term was about to end allowed then-governor Rick Scott to run for his U.S. Senate seat in 2018. That carve-out doesn’t apply to DeSantis, whose term as governor runs into January 2027.

Last month, Trump allies filed an ethics complaint accusing DeSantis of illegally soliciting and receiving millions of dollars in gifts as part of a “shadow presidential campaign.” DeSantis’s office called the complaint “frivolous” and “politically motivated.”

DeSantis and Florida GOP look to upend public record laws as they attempt to shield his travel and other records ahead of likely White House bid

    CNN —
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his GOP allies have moved to shield the Republican leader from the state’s notoriously robust public records laws as he prepares to launch a campaign for the White House.

One bill advancing through the Republican-controlled state legislature would conceal information about DeSantis’ travel and who he has met with at the governor’s mansion. Another would allow state political committees – like the one where DeSantis has stashed $85 million for his future political ambitions – to report their fundraising activity less frequently.

Separately, DeSantis in court cases has lately claimed “executive privilege” to block the release of records and to keep staff from testifying – a power typically reserved for presidents and which none of his predecessors had previously asserted is entrusted to the state’s governor. If realized, it would give DeSantis tremendous new discretion to keep information about his administration from the public.

    ADVERTISING

Democrats contend Republicans here are trying to protect DeSantis from news stories and opposition research that could reflect negatively on the governor as he nears a run for president in 2024. First Amendment advocates in the state warn these efforts will have a far-reaching effect on Floridians’ access to their leaders long after DeSantis’ turn in the national limelight.

In Jerusalem, DeSantis offers support for Israel and blasts Disney

“His path and aspirations are just so blatant and this is all retroactive cleanup for anything he might have done in the past,” said Sen. Jason Pizzo, a Miami Democrat. “This is the governor saying the public doesn’t have the right to know.”

DeSantis’ office did not respond to requests for comment.

DeSantis and the media have frequently clashed over how his administration has dealt with the state’s open government laws, which for decades have given Floridians a unique window into the inner workings of their government. Unlike in most states, public records laws here are enshrined in the state constitution to foster an environment of transparency and force officials to operate in the sunshine.

News organizations have sued his administration to obtain records that past governors regularly released upon request. Last year, a judge found DeSantis violated the state’s open records laws by failing to turn over documents related to the flights his administration arranged for migrants to fly from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard.

Now, Republican lawmakers have advanced legislation that would exempt DeSantis’ official travel from public records laws. The bill, which already passed the state Senate and is likely to pass the state House, would apply not just to DeSantis’ future travel, but also his extensive use of state planes throughout his time as governor.

Such information has long been public record and has at times led to uncomfortable disclosures about Florida governors. In 1996, the St. Petersburg Times cited these records in writing that then-Gov. Lawton Chiles, a Democrat, used the state plane to attend political events, igniting a controversy. In 1999, the Sarasota Herald Tribune found six months into Republican Jeb Bush’s first term that one-third of his trips on the state plane conveniently landed near his South Florida home. And in 2010, the Miami Herald reported a state plan took then-Gov. Charlie Crist to a fundraiser for his struggling campaign for the GOP nomination for US Senate.

Opponents say the legislation, as written, would also block from disclosure visitor logs for the governor’s mansion.

Republicans defended the legislation, saying it was needed to prevent potential bad actors from learning about the security details and travel habits of the state’s top executive. The bill would also exempt similar records related to the lieutenant governor, top legislative leaders and the chief justice of the state Supreme Court.

“Things are so different than even they were 10 years ago,” Senate President Kathleen Passidomo said at a press conference last week. “We have a young governor who has young children, a young family. God forbid something would happen because information is out there.”

    Democrats are unconvinced.

“I can’t believe that we are making it even easier for him to not provide that information,” state Sen. Tina Polsky said during recent debate on the bill. “He lives in a government paid building. He gets government paid transportation. He is supposedly running for president and all over the country. We should be able to see if he is flying on our dime or a donor’s dime or his own dime or his (political committee’s) dime without compromising security.”

The bill would also exempt such disclosures “for persons for whom such services are requested by the governor.” The expansive language could allow the DeSantis administration to keep secret past and future trips arranged by the governor’s office even when he wasn’t involved, including some records related to future migrant flights, opponents said. CNN previously reported that Perla Huerta, the recruiter used by the state to locate migrants in San Antonio, and Larry Keefe, DeSantis’ public safety czar, traveled to Texas ahead of the mission to meet with state officials there and appeared to stake out migrants.

“If DeSantis wanted to fly the head of the Proud Boys to DC on the state plane and give him state protection, we won’t know,” said Barbara Petersen, executive director of the Florida Center for Government Accountability. “That may seem extreme, but that’s how expansive this bill is. It really is despotic.”

In other legislation, the state Senate passed this week a sweeping elections bill that changes reporting requirements for state political committees from monthly to quarterly. That legislation would affect disclosures for Friends of Ron DeSantis, where the Florida governor has parked leftover money from his reelection and continues to collect contributions ahead of his expected run for president. CNN first reported last year that it is anticipated that the money in that committee will be transferred to a super PAC supporting DeSantis’ expected White House bid.

    Assertions of executive privilege
In addition to the legislative moves, lawyers for the DeSantis administration have recently pushed a novel argument in court cases involving access to state government: asserting that the governor has “executive privilege.”

In at least four cases since last year, DeSantis’ office cited the legal protection to block the release of records or keep his staff from testifying. Judges in three of the four cases declined to validate DeSantis’ argument. In one of those cases, a lawsuit over the state’s new congressional boundaries championed by DeSantis, a judge wrote: “Executive privilege, if one exists, would provide no relief in this case.”

But in January, a Tallahassee judge sided with the governor’s lawyers in a case over whether DeSantis should have to unveil who advised him on state Supreme Court picks. DeSantis in a 2022 interview said he had relied on “six or seven pretty big legal conservative heavyweights” to interview potential nominees, prompting a “J. Doe” to submit an anonymous records request for communications with those individuals.

DeSantis’ office objected, citing executive privilege. Leon County Circuit Court Judge Angela C. Dempsey agreed and for the first time established a precedent for executive privilege in the state. Her ruling leaned on previous court cases outside Florida.

Petersen, who has advocated on First Amendment issues for three decades in Florida, said she cannot recall a previous administration suggesting such power exists here. Her organization intends to file an amicus brief in the appeal of the case. CNN is part of a coalition of media organizations that is also seeking to appear as amicus in the state District Court of Appeal.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Petersen said. “We all feel like we’ve been beaten about the head.”

Catherine Cameron, a law professor at Stetson University in Florida, said she too “could not find any governor that had expressly claimed it before DeSantis.”

While presidents have claimed a form of executive privilege dating back to George Washington, Cameron said, it has not traditionally applied to governors. The idea, rooted in the separation of powers, generally has allowed occupants of the Oval Office to seek frank counsel from advisers without fear that the conversation will become public in congressional or judicial testimony.

Former President Donald Trump repeatedly attempted to broaden its scope, first by trying to hide special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on the Russia investigation from Congress and the public and more recently to keep Steve Bannon and others from testifying in cases related to the January 6, 2021, insurrection and his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

In recent years, some have courts extended such authority to governors in Washington and Montana. The ruling in Florida appears to conflict with the state constitution’s “express provision” and “broad law” giving public access to the records of government, Cameron said.

“This is quite a shift for us to be wholesale excluding documents from the public,” she said.

DeSantis’ office declined to say how the DeSantis administration will define “executive privilege” moving forward and how it will decide what records fall under this new power.

“I would hope, I assume, and I believe he will follow the law,” Passidomo said.

    The hypocrisy is just stunning.

So the despicables have taken extraordinary steps to secret away the "evidence" they have gathered to claim Trump led an insurrection.
They claim, among other things, that videos show escape routes and secure rooms where government officials can be safe in case of an attack.
And that releasing the videos will endanger government officials cause, you know, terrorists and that the RUSSIANS with access to them can do .......... something.

So along comes Desantis, and when despicables demand his travel records, hoping to find .................. something, Desantis plays the safety card and says he doesn't want them publicized cause some crazed despicable will do ................ something.

We can hear butt hurt despicables howling from here.

    It's like tax returns.
We had to hear, for 8 years, despicables bloviating about how Trump should release his tax returns, everyone else does, what's he got to hide, and yada yada WHOOP!!
But then we learned that Nancy Antoinette, the 3rd in line of succession, simply declines to release her tax returns, and the despicables go "well, she isn't running for president so, no problem. Let the old gal have her secrets.

The hypocrisy is simply stunning, isn't it?

See what happens when people use false information to fit a narrative... and it's not the total number of teachers that is wrong however it is before statistically factoring the number of students per teacher.

Can't argue with that... There's no source of the data.

Any genius knows, the best proof reader is yourself.
If, you know, you actually read what you write.

But check with Biden. There's probably a program ....

Florida court issues summons in Disney lawsuit against Ron DeSantis while he is in Israel

A Florida court issued a summons Thursday against Gov. Ron DeSantis in relation to Disney’s lawsuit against him, while DeSantis is more than 6,000 miles away from the state on a trip to Israel.

The summons, which was addressed to the governor’s office in Tallahassee, was issued by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida.

"A lawsuit has been filed against you," it says, adding that "[w]ithin 21 days after service of this summons on you (not counting the day you received it)… you must serve on the plaintiff an answer to the attached complaint or a motion under Rule 12 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure."

Disney filed a lawsuit against DeSantis on Wednesday, alleging the Republican orchestrated a "targeted campaign of government retaliation" against the company that violates Disney's free speech rights. Disney is challenging the legality of a new board appointed by DeSantis to govern the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District – where the Walt Disney World resort is located.

The legal complaint is an escalation of a fight between DeSantis and Disney that began last year when the company campaigned to overturn Florida's Parental Rights in Education law.

DeSantis responded by pushing the Florida legislature to strip Disney's self-governing authority and create a new board, full of his appointees, which now has control over the theme park's development.

That board recently voted to nullify two development contracts Disney signed in February.

I don't think the suit has merit," the governor said in Jerusalem Thursday when asked about the matter.

"They’re upset because they’re having to live by the same rules as everybody else. They don’t want to pay the same taxes as everybody else, and they want to be able to control things without proper oversight," DeSantis said. "The days of putting one company on a pedestal with no accountability are over in the state of Florida."

While in Jerusalem Thursday, DeSantis spoke glowingly of Israel during a speech in celebration of the country's 75th anniversary of independence.

DeSantis is in Israel this week to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the country's independence.
DeSantis called Israel a "beacon of freedom in a troubled region, an engine of economic growth and opportunity, and a center of innovation and technology that is the envy of the world."

"Israel is also one of America's most valued and trusted allies," DeSantis said. "Maintaining a strong U.S.-Israel relationship has been a priority for me during my time in elected office and I know it's been a priority for the majority of American people."
