'Stop lying': Congressman smacks down GOP colleague for ill-conceived plot to censure Adam Schiff

A House GOP resolution seeking to censure Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) for supposedly making false statements about former President Donald Trump's association with Russia in 2016 ended in defeat this week as 20 Republican representatives voted with Democrats to sink the measure.

One of the resolution's key proponents, freshman Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), vowed to try again on Twitter. "20 Republicans voted against the recommended fine, censure, and investigation of Schiff," she wrote. "I don’t think they read the bill in entirety. Next week, we will be filing a motion to censure and investigate Schiff. We are removing fine as that seems to be what made these Republicans uneasy."

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY), however, quickly smacked her down — and pointed out there's no evidence Schiff lied about the Russia affair in the first place.

"A few suggestions for you," tweeted Goldman, an attorney who formerly worked on Trump's second impeachment. "1) Read the Mueller and OIG reports, both of which explain that the Steele dossier was irrelevant to opening the Russia investigation or the convictions of Trump campaign members. 2) do some research about what 'evidence' means. 3) Stop lying."

This is not the first move Republicans have made to single out Schiff, the former chair of the House Intelligence Committee, for punishment since taking a narrow majority last year. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) removed him from the committee after taking the gavel, ostensibly for lying about whether he knew the identity of the whistleblower who triggered Trump's first impeachment — although there's no actual evidence Schiff lied about that.

The 20 House Republicans who voted against censuring and fining Schiff came from all sides of the caucus, from vulnerable swing-district incumbents like Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ), to far-right Freedom Caucus figures like Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who said, "The Constitution says the House may make its own rules but we can’t violate other (later) provisions of the Constitution. A $16 million fine is a violation of the 27th and 8th amendments."

'We don't know': Andy Biggs and Marjorie Taylor Greene admit they can't find 'tapes' implicating Biden

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) admitted during an interview with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Sunday that Republicans cannot find "tapes" that allegedly are evidence of wrongdoings by the Biden family.

During an interview on Fox News, host Maria Bartiromo asked Biggs and Greene about raw unverified intelligence from the FBI. Republicans have claimed that the FBI documents are evidence of President Joe Biden's corruption.

"[FBI Director Christopher Wray] redacted the most important part of information on there, is that there was 17 audio recordings, 15 of Hunter, two of Joe Biden himself, about Joe Biden taking a $5 million bribe," Green asserted.

Bartiromo called the investigation "the biggest political scandal any of us have ever seen."

"So that's why I wanna get back to these tapes for a moment because you just said that there are 15 recordings of Hunter Biden and two of Joe Biden," the Fox News host said. "Andy Biggs, look, obviously, we need evidence. We've been talking about this for a long time. So far, the evidence has been bank records. Where are these tapes?"

"Well, we don't know," Biggs admitted. "The oligarch kept the tapes for his own protection."

While Greene did not know the locations of the alleged tapes, she claimed to have other "evidence" against the Bidens.

"I'm all for impeachment," she said. "And as far as evidence, we have evidence. We have bank records, tons of them, that show the Biden family, Hunter, all kinds of family members, even grandchildren, being paid millions and millions of dollars from all these foreign countries that we know they have no business to prove that they're producing a product or a service to be making all this money."

"Hunter Biden is a crackhead," Greene added. "His evidence that we have on him showing all of his prostitutes coming from Ukraine, coming from Russia, this shows that this man was only purely profiting by his father's powerful positions. Joe Biden absolutely should be impeached."

DoJ Keeps Rebuffing Jim Jordan on His Investigation into the Investigation of Trump

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) is a staunch and outspoken ally of former President Donald Trump, and he wants to get to the bottom of special counsel Jack Smith‘s federal investigation that resulted in 37 criminal charges. But the Department of Justice is not too keen on letting Jordan butt into an active federal criminal investigation.

MSNBC’s Steve Benen reports that Jordan, who is the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is going after the Justice Department and Smith to gain more information about “the scope of the criminal investigation” into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents.

Giving Attorney General Merrick Garland a deadline of June 20, Jordan requested “an unredacted copy of the memorandum outlining the scope of Mr. Smith’s probes regarding President Trump and any supporting documentation related to his appointment as special counsel.”


Ahead of deadline, the Justice Department provided some information relevant to Jordan’s request, but not everything Jordan was hoping for. Politico reported:

DOJ did tell Jordan that through March “approximately 26 Special Agents … worked either full or part-time on Special Counsel Smith’s investigations in some capacity during that timeframe.” And it provided the orders appointing both Smith and Robert Hur, who is leading the investigation into President [Joe] Biden’s handling of classified documents. The orders outline the scope of both investigations and the Justice Department said, based on a search, that memoranda has not been issued since then clarifying the scope.

This response from the Justice Department did not include much of the “supporting documentation” that Jordan requested, and the DoJ explained that they would not provide “non-public information about an ongoing criminal investigation.”

What’s more, Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte added, “Protecting the confidentiality of non-public information regarding investigations and prosecutions preserves the American people’s confidence in the evenhanded administration of justice by guarding against the appearance of political pressure or other improper attempts to influence Department decisions.”

Numerous accusations have been made against the Department of Justice that it’s unfairly targeting Trump, that there’s a “two-tier justice system” in effect that is going after a political opponent of the sitting president. But the Justice Department’s “evenhanded” approach to Rep. Jordan is consistent with the intensive reporting that appeared in The Washington Post this morning, that both the DoJ and FBI actively avoided the appearance of partisanship in their investigations.

'Giddy' Democrats see Kevin McCarthy 'playing right into their hands': Politico

Politico's Playbook reports that Democrats in the House of Representatives are "giddy" watching House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) desperately try to make amends with hardline conservatives who are revolting over the debt ceiling deal he cut with President Joe Biden.

As Politico notes, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for years showed she was willing to roll over her most progressive members' priorities to protect some of her most vulnerable members in swing districts, whereas now McCarthy is bending over backwards to cater to the most irascible members of his caucus.

"As Democrats see it, McCarthy is... playing right into their hands," writes Politico. "Since becoming speaker, McCarthy has exposed his 'majority makers' to votes on steep cuts to federal programs that benefit millions of Americans and, just last week, the reversal of a Biden administration rule that cracks down on a gun accessory used in several recent mass shootings. Both were priorities of the hard right and exposed members in swing districts to Democratic attacks."

What's more, the publication writes that even tougher votes are coming for Republican members.

Democrats have won a string of special elections in the wake of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and the party sees protecting abortion rights as its strongest issue heading into next year's elections.

Jim Jordan trolled by Democrat over Hunter Biden plea deal freakout

Rep. Jim Jordan (R) on Tuesday lashed out at the Hunter Biden plea deal involving misdemeanors, only to have the situation thrown back in his face by a Democratic colleague.

Jordan, who is reportedly leading a GOP push to cripple the "fight against disinformation" ahead of the 2024 election, posted only "DOUBLE STANDARD OF JUSTICE" in all caps on Twitter. This is in line with other quotes from Jordan, who also said on Twitter, "The Swamp always protects its own" and 10% for the Big Guy. Zero jail time for his son."

The implication is that prosecutors threw the book at Trump, but cut Hunter Biden a deal without jailtime.

While Jordan was likely expecting his tweet would be a slam dunk, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D) had other plans. Swalwell quoted Jordan's tweet and wrote, "I'm sorry all the Trump-appointed prosecutors have let you down."

Swalwell was pointing to the fact that the Hunter Biden cases were at least partially prosecuted by Trump holdover appointees, meaning it's likely not a political act.

Dem Rep. Jerry Nadler Tries to Embarrass John Durham

When Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee brought special counsel John Durham in for a hearing Wednesday, they thought it’d be an opportunity to tout Durham’s findings that the FBI should not have launched an investigation into possible collusion between Russia and Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), however, took it as an opportunity to personally embarrass Durham.

Nadler specifically went after Durham’s limited credentials.

“You only filed three criminal cases. You only brought two cases to trial, correct?” Nadler asked Durham. Durham said that was correct.


“You lost all the cases you brought to trial, correct?” Nadler asked. Durham again said that was correct.

And then Nadler questioned the length and cost of the investigation, which Durham tried to defend. Ultimately Durham had to agree, however, that his investigation into the investigation took four years to complete.

The exchange was one of several tense interactions between Durham and Democrats Wednesday—with members like Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) insisting Durham is at risk of damaging his reputation, and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) questioning the merits of the investigation, leading to some raised voices from around the room.

Durham’s exchange with Schiff led to Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) banging his knuckles on the table across the room, mimicking a gavel.

At least one Democrat, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), also criticized Chairman Jim Jordan’s conduct during the hearing after Jordan mocked a line of questioning by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) about Durham’s conversations with Attorney General Bill Barr. During Nadler’s opening statement, the Ohio Republican could be seen shaking his head and lightly chuckling at the remarks.

Durham during the hearing towed the line of spicy responses and cordial conversation, occasionally objecting to more personal lines of attacks from Democrats. After Cohen insisted Durham was risking his reputation, Durham said he only cares about his reputation among people he respects, his family and his “lord,” which drew applause from Republicans around the room.

Durham previously spoke to members of the House Intelligence Committee in a closed-door meeting on Tuesday. He’s broadly suggested enacting some reforms to the FBI and the Department of Justice.

Wednesday, he told members of the panel his recommendations were “not an easy fix.”

“It’s going to take time to rebuild the public’s confidence in the institution,” he said.

When Republicans brought Special Counsel John Durham to the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, they thought it’d be an opportunity to score points on Democrats—particularly Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who spent years hyping up Donald Trump’s connections to Russia.

What they got instead was a viral moment when Schiff got Durham—the man tasked with concluding whether the FBI’s investigation of Russia’s connections to the 2016 Trump campaign was appropriate—took Durham to task.

Schiff, a former impeachment manager against Trump, questioned Durham about whether President Trump flaunted information that was released by Russian hackers during the 2016 election. Durham repeatedly insisted he had no knowledge of the matter. But in the midst of the exchange, Durham clearly stated he doesn’t doubt the validity of evidence showing Russia was trying to help Trump—something many Republicans have vehemently denied.

I don’t think there’s any question that Russians intruded into—hacked into the systems, they released information,” Durham said.


“And that was helpful to the Trump campaign, right?” Schiff asked.

After trying to deflect the question, Durham agreed the Russians had been helpful to the Trump campaign.

“And Trump made use of that, as I said, didn’t he, by touting those stolen documents on the campaign trail over a hundred times,” Schiff said.

Durham said he didn’t “really read the newspapers, or listen to the news.”

“So I don’t know that,” he said.

“Were you totally oblivious to Donald Trump’s use of the stolen emails on the campaign trail more than a hundred times?” Schiff asked. “Did that escape your attention?”

Durham responded that he wasn’t aware of that.

The exchange was one of multiple tense moments between Schiff and Durham throughout the day as Republicans looked to prop up Durham’s report insisting the FBI should not have investigated possible collusion between Trump and Russia in the 2016 election.

Durham repeatedly tried to downplay the seriousness of Russia offering the Trump campaign help—and the Trump campaign’s eagerness to accept that help.



At one point, Schiff asked Durham whether he was aware that Robert Mueller’s investigation revealed that Donald Trump Jr. “was informed that a Russian official was offering the Trump campaign 'very high-level and sensitive information" that would be incriminating of Hillary Clinton.”

“Sure, people get phone calls all the time from individuals who claim to have information like that,” Durham claimed.

"Really? The son of a presidential candidate gets calls all the time from a foreign government offering dirt on their opponent. Is that what you're saying?" Schiff replied.

"I don't think this is unique in your experience,” Durham said.

At another point in the hearing, Schiff compared Durham and Mueller’s investigations.

“The only distinguishing thing between [Mueller's] investigation and yours is he refused to bring charges where he couldn't prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and you did,” Schiff said.

Durham brought three charges forward, went to trial with two, and won convictions on zero—a point Democrats repeatedly brought up during the hearing.

Mueller’s investigation concluded that there were “multiple links between Trump Campaign officials and individuals tied to the Russian government.”

“Those links included Russian offers of assistance to the Campaign. In some instances, the Campaign was receptive to the offer, while in other instances the Campaign officials shied way.”

The Mueller investigation ultimately brought forward roughly three dozen charges and about a half-dozen convictions.

John Durham made false statements to Congress during congressional hearing: journalist

Former special counsel John Durham, who was appointed by the Trump administration to investigate the origins of the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, made false statements when testifying before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, journalist David Corn wrote for Mother Jones.

"When Durham came before the committee, House Republicans eagerly picked over the scraps in his final report, which has been much criticized, and they treated him as a hero," wrote Corn. "But under questioning from Democratic and Republican members, Durham misrepresented key aspects of the Russia scandal, suggesting he was either unfamiliar with basic facts or was purposefully trying to mislead the committee and the American public."

At times, Durham couched his claims in cautious language like, "I'm not aware," when asked by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) about efforts by Russian officials to hack into Hillary Clinton's email server.

But at other times, he simply stated things that were clearly false.

For example, when Schiff questioned Durham about the infamous meeting between the Trump campaign and a Russian lawyer in Trump Tower, Durham said, “The more complete story is that they met, and it was a ruse, and they didn’t talk about Mrs. Clinton.” But former special counsel Robert Mueller's report already found they did, in fact, talk about Clinton. Durham also said that, “There was no such evidence" anyone on Trump's team met with Russian intelligence officials, even though it is established Paul Manafort met with Konstantin Kilimnik, believed by U.S. officials to be a Russian agent.

"Durham’s investigation and report raised several questions about his aims," wrote Corn. "Was he running a fair and balanced probe or weaponizing a government inquiry to buttress Trump’s self-serving lies about the Russia scandal? Durham’s false statements to Congress about essential facts provide more reason for suspicion, and they further undermine his credibility. They might even merit their own investigation."
