Two Cisgender People Were Killed in Separate Attacks Motivated by Transphobia

Trans people have long maintained that transphobia does not just affect us. That’s been proven true in the worst way, with reports of two cis people being murdered for allegedly misdirected anti-trans hostility.

In a Sunday blog post, PGH Lesbian Correspondents collected the stories of Michelle Dionne Peacock and Collin Smith. Peacock was a 59-year-old Black cis woman who was reportedly murdered by 67-year-old Tommy Wayne Earl in Richmond, Indiana in June. Officers were dispatched to the Merle Henderson Apartment complex in Richmond on June 30, according to local outlet FOX 59. Peacock’s body was found with a laceration to the throat, and she was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officers found Earl armed with a straight razor and with blood on his hands and clothing. Earl resisted arrest, and according to FOX 59, went so far as to tell one of the officers that he would kill him too.

During interviews with investigators, Earl allegedly referred to Peacock as “a male acting like a woman” several times, per FOX 59, and that he would “do it again.” Earl claimed he had been having a “dispute” with Peacock for months and made reference to the possibility of having had a psychotic break, telling investigators he had recently adjusted how he administered drugs prescribed to him by the V.A. He also reportedly told investigators that he needed to be kept away from Black inmates, saying that he “does not get along with them.”

Earl is being held at the Wayne County Jail and has been charged with a level 1 felony of murder, a level 6 felony of intimidation, and a class A misdemeanor of resisting law enforcement, according to FOX 59.

On her Facebook page, Peacock wrote that some of her many hobbies include shopping, mahjong, cooking, and trivia games. In between Facebook game updates, Peacock had even updated her profile picture to a photo of herself wearing a shirt that said “Legalize Being Black” on March 2. Her daughter, Rochelle Peacock, made a GoFundMe last week to raise money for her funeral. In the description, Rochelle shared that Peacock had lived in Richmond for three years and had been battling “a long life of cancer.” She also stated that Earl had been “bully[ing] her,” and although Peacock made numerous complaints, “nothing was done.”

It’s worth noting that cis Black women are often targeted by transphobia, especially as it intertwines with white supremacy. As Derrick Clifton wrote for Them in 2021, there’s a long history of Black women athletes’ bodies being policed in sports, with people “mak[ing] cruel remarks about their perceived femininity and creat[ing] racist depictions of their physicality.”

An 18-Year-Old Trans Man Was Killed in South Carolina

Police have charged a man Jacob Williamson met through the internet with first-degree murder.

In a separate incident, 32-year-old Colin Smith was stabbed to death in Portland, Oregon on July 2. He had been out with coworkers at the High Dive Bar when 24-year-old Rahnique Jackson started harassing one of his coworkers, who is trans. When Smith tried to intervene, Jackson allegedly stabbed him to death, according to local outlet KOIN. He was arrested by U.S. Marshals last Friday and was arrested on charges of second degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon, according to a press release from the Portland Police Bureau.

Smith was remembered as someone who “loved those around him unconditionally,” as his former partner, Paulina Solis, told KOIN. “He always looked out for the people that got overlooked, and a protector which is, you know, how he went — protecting those he cared about,” Solis said. Eater Portland additionally described Smith as having “an unrelenting dedication to service, both in his work and in his relationships.” He also loved animals, cooking, and the outdoors. A GoFundMe for Smith’s family called him a “truly special person.”

Although these incidents may seem disparate, they’re a harsh reminder that transphobia is deadly, and trans people are far from the only people affected by it.

Treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans live in some fantasy world where they think they can take on the US government and US military if need be in a civil war. Which only goes to prove how delusional and dangerous they are. US law enforcement both state and federal won't stand for that and will arrest them or put them down if they have to.

And treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans are too stupid, ignorant, and mentally ill to comprehend the odds. We are a nation of more than 330 million people. And most of them don't even bother to vote. But the one thing the very vast majority can agree with is we have a good thing going here in the United States of America. We are the richest and most powerful nation on earth. And the vast majority sure as fuck is not going to stand for a tiny minority of treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans threatening that just because they can't win elections.

Ex-terrorism official under Trump blames government for Jan. 6: 'Like Waco, Texas or Ruby Ridge'

A Republican caller to C-SPAN urged "civil war" because "Democrats suck."

During Monday's Washington Journal program, a caller from Massachusetts named Bill claimed, "Democrats had the Supreme Court for 60 or 70 years, and everything went their way."

"And everything was fine and dandy as long as it was liberalism," he continued. "Now it's only been, what, four or five, six years that it's Republican."

Bill argued that Democrats should focus on allegations that President Joe Biden "took 20-plus million dollars." And he insisted Biden was a pedophile and a rapist.

"And we're talking about the Supreme Court!" he added. "Oh, let's get this civil war going. Democrats suck, bye-bye."

Idaho jury hits Bundy, defendants with tens of millions in damages in St. Luke’s lawsuit

Fourteen months after St. Luke’s filed a defamation lawsuit against Ammon Bundy and another far-right activist, the case has reached a conclusion.

The 12 jurors deciding damages in the civil action filed back into the courtroom early Monday evening to announce what Bundy, close associate Diego Rodriguez and their various entities would be ordered to pay the health system and other plaintiffs.

The verdict: a total of $26.5 million in compensatory damages and $26 million in punitive damages.

Compensatory damages are intended to compensate plaintiffs for losses experienced because of defendants’ actions and punitive damages are to punish defendants for their actions.

St. Luke’s attorney Erik Stidham told the jury on Friday that he thought $37 million would be the fairest number for compensatory damages and $16 million should be the minimum amount considered. He did not suggest an amount for punitive damages.

“My hope is that you will look at this and you will deter (Bundy) in a way that he hasn’t been deterred yet,” Stidham said in his closing statements.

Boise police arrest Ammon Bundy on a trespassing charge on March 12, 2022, at St. Luke’s hospital in Boise.
Bundy and Rodriguez led protests at the St. Luke’s hospitals in Meridian and downtown Boise in March 2022 over a child welfare case involving Rodriguez’s 10-month-old grandchild. The lawsuit named as defendants both men, Bundy’s People’s Rights Network, Bundy’s campaign for governor, and Rodriguez’s Freedom Man website and political action committee.

The suit claimed that the defendants posted multiple lies online about the hospital system, its employees and the reasons the baby was taken into custody.

A number of health professionals testified that they had treated the baby for severe malnutrition.

“In my opinion, if he had been allowed to go home with his parents and continue on the trajectory he was on, he would have died,” said Rachel Thomas, a St. Luke’s emergency room doctor who treated Rodriguez’s grandchild.

Stidham said the defendants, through videos and blog posts, spread lies that the hospital was working with the government to take children away from Christian families to be sexually abused and given to gay couples. He alleged that businesses and groups belonging to Bundy and Rodriguez were a “massive ugly machine built to make money and radicalize people.” He said lying about the welfare case was a way to get people to donate.

After Bundy, who was running for Idaho governor at the time, and Rodriguez repeatedly failed to appear in court or respond to a judge’s orders, they were found in default, meaning they essentially forfeited the case, leaving it to head to the damages portion.

In addition to St. Luke’s, the plaintiffs bringing the lawsuit included St. Luke’s CEO Chris Roth and two medical professionals who worked on the child, Dr. Natasha Erickson and nurse practitioner Tracy Jungman. All plaintiffs were awarded millions in damages by the jury.

'Violent and reckless' O.C. Planned Parenthood firebombing plot detailed in federal indictment

Chance Brannon, a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, and Tibet Ergul of Irvine are accused of being the two masked individuals who threw a Molotov cocktail, igniting a blaze, at a Costa Mesa Planned Parenthood clinic last year. (Department of Justice)

A Florida man was arrested and identified as the third suspect involved in the 2022 firebombing of a Costa Mesa Planned Parenthood clinic along with a U.S. Marine and another accomplice, according to a federal indictment unsealed Monday.

Xavier Batten, 21, of Brooksville, Fla., was arrested by the FBI on Friday and accused of conspiring with Chance Brannon, a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, and Tibet Ergul of Irvine to burn down the clinic in March 2022 using a Molotov cocktail.

All three are charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of malicious destruction of property by fire and explosion. Brannon and Ergul are both also charged with one count of possession of an unregistered destructive device and one misdemeanor count of intentional damage to a reproductive health services facility.

Brannon, 23, of San Juan Capistrano, and Ergul, 21, are accused of being the two masked and hooded individuals who were caught on security video tossing the Molotov cocktail on March 13, 2022, igniting a blaze. Both were taken into custody without incident last month and pleaded not guilty at their arraignment Monday morning in Santa Ana.

Batten is accused of advising and directing Brannon on how to make the Molotov cocktail.

"The violent and reckless attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic alleged in the indictment is intolerable,'' U.S. Atty. Martin Estrada said. "This indictment shows that federal law enforcement will work diligently to uncover and hold accountable those who plan and carry out violent extremist acts against others."

Threats and violence targeting reproductive healthcare facilities have become increasingly common, with the U.S. Department of Justice prosecuting more than two dozen such cases in the last four years, including a group that tried to physically block an entrance to a Washington, D.C., clinic last year and a man who in 2020 and 2021 shot a BB gun at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Pasadena.

After the firebombing last year, Nichole Ramirez, vice president of communications and donor relations for Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino counties, called such attacks unacceptable.

“The safety of our staff, patients, and supporters is our highest priority, and we are working in collaboration with the FBI and local law enforcement to prosecute this attack to the fullest extent of the law,” Ramirez said in a statement last year. “[We] will continue to provide expert, compassionate care for the community as we have done for over 50 years.”

On the day of the attack, Brannon and Ergul left Ergul's Irvine home, went to Planned Parenthood and tossed the Molotov cocktail at the clinic entrance, prosecutors alleged. The resulting fire forced the facility to close the following morning and cancel about 30 appointments.

Images from the security videos in the affidavit show two men wearing hooded sweatshirts and face masks approach the Planned Parenthood facility about 1 a.m. They ignite a device and throw it at the front door of the building.

“The device landed against a southern wall next to the glass door and erupted into a fire, which spread up the wall and across the ceiling above the glass door,” according to the original complaint filed in the case.

Costa Mesa firefighters knocked down the fire on Nutmeg Place, and a subsequent analysis of evidence showed that a glass container and other materials at the scene contained gasoline.

After authorities appealed to the public for help in identifying the attackers, a witness called the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center saying that she knew the suspects from high school and could identify them.

The day after the fire, Ergul allegedly texted the witness, taking credit for the fire and noting that he wished he “could’ve recorded the combustion.” According to the affidavit, Ergul sent the acquaintance a photograph of his gloved hand holding the Molotov cocktail from inside Brannon's car.

Federal agents also obtained phone records that showed Brannon was in the vicinity of Planned Parenthood at the time of the attack and again later, about 3 a.m., according to the affidavit. A Dodge vehicle driven by Brannon found by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service outside the barracks was also tied to the crime, according to the affidavit filed last month.

Brannon and Ergul are scheduled to face trial Sept. 5 before U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney. After his arrest, Batten made his initial court appearance Friday in Florida and was ordered held without bond pending trial.

More say violence could be necessary to restore Trump to White House: survey
    [IMG]
    1.1k
    Tara Suter
Tue, July 25, 2023 at 4:48 PM MDT

A recent survey shows increasing support for the use of violence to restore former President Trump to the White House.

The report, titled “Dangers to Democracy” and released by the Chicago Project on Security Threats (CPST) earlier this month, found that 7 percent of Americans from April 6 to June 26 agree that “the use of force is justified to restore Donald Trump to the presidency.”

That number is an increase from 4.5 percent, or “the equivalent of an estimated shift from 12 million to 18 million American adults,” according to the survey, which was conducted by CPST and NORC.

It’s the first bump in the number of Americans who agree with that statement since April of last year.

The rise “likely reflects the response of more intense commitment to Trump following the announcement of the federal indictment against him for mishandling classified documents on June 9, 2023 — about two and a half weeks before our June 26, 2023 survey,” the poll said.

Trump was charged by the Justice Department with 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information, one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, one count of making false statements and four additional offenses pertaining to different forms of concealment. The obstruction charge alone carries a maximum sentence of 20 years. The former president pleaded not guilty on June 13.

It was Trump’s second indictment, and his first federal one, following his decision to run for president in 2024. He had previously been hit with charges in April by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg over alleged hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels; he has also pleaded not guilty in that case.

The former president predicted earlier this month that he would be hit with his second federal indictment, this one over his involvement in the events of Jan. 6, 2021, in which a violent mob stormed the Capitol in an effort to overturns the results of the election.

Trump has frequently been accused of being responsible for the attack, having rallied his supporters that day and urged them to march to the Capitol following his loss to President Biden. The events of Jan. 6 and Trump’s continued refusal to acknowledge that the 2020 election was free and fair have fueled concerns that the 2024 one will also be marked by violence.

Other findings in the survey included “about 40 percent of Americans” sharing “at least one attitude reflecting deep distrust of American democratic institutions” and “20 percent of Americans” believing in “anti-democratic political conspiracy theories about how the country is run.”

The survey used a random sample of 3,543 people with a margin of error of 2.30 percent and was conducted between June 22-26.

July 31 (UPI) -- Authorities in North Carolina said six migrant workers where intentionally ran over by a White man driving a sport utility vehicle in a Walmart parking lot.

The incident happened shortly before 1:20 p.m. Sunday at the Walmart located at 306 North Generals Blvd in Lincolton, a city home to fewer than 12,000 people about 38 miles northwest of Charlotte.

The six migrants were struck by what the Lincolnton Police Department said in a statement was a older model mid-sized SUV driven by an "older White male."

"The motives of the suspect are still under investigation," the department said.

Local police said the workers were hit "in what appears to be an intentional assault with a vehicle."

All six migrants were transported to a local hospital with various injuries though none appeared to be life threatening.

The Lincolnton Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying the vehicle and its driver, posting images of the black SUV to its Facebook account that were presumably taken from surveillance footage of the Walmart parking lot.

The incident comes nearly two months after a driver plowed through a group of migrants waiting for a bus in Brownsville, Texas, killing eight people.

The driver, who's been identified as 34-year-old George Alvarez, has been charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Exclusive: Killed for vogueing: Sibley’s pal says victim died in his arms after stabbed at Brooklyn gas station in anti-gay hate crime: ‘Not going to live hiding’
    2023/07/31

Fighting back tears, O’Shae Sibley’s best friend described on Facebook Live the horror of watching his pal die in his arms — but vowed gay New Yorkers will not cower in the face of hate.

“They killed my brother right in front of me,” Otis Pena said in the nearly 15-minute long video he posted hours after Sibley was stabbed to death at a Brooklyn gas station.

“I’m covered in his blood. They murdered him because he was gay, because he stood up for his friends ... I’m trying to put pressure on the wound. There’s blood squirting everywhere.”

“That’s all I had, bro.” Pena added. “He didn’t deserve this. He was a beacon of light...We may be gay, but we exist. We’re not going to live in fear. We’re not going to live hiding.”

Sibley, 28, a professional dancer who has performed at Lincoln Center as part of an all-queer dance group, was with four friends, including Pena, when they pulled into the Midwood Mobil station at Coney Island Ave. and Avenue P about 11 p.m. Saturday. They were all shirtless in swim trunks returning from a fun-filled day at a New Jersey beach.

While one got gas, some of the others started dancing, drawing the attention of another group of men.

“Let’s just get gas right here,” Pena said on Facebook Live. “Two blocks from my house and they murdered him. They murdered him. They murdered him.”

According to a witness, the other men identified themselves as Muslims and were especially offended by the small tight trunks one of Sibley’s friend was wearing.

“This guy was dancing in underwear and the suspect was like, ‘Why are dancing in your underwear?’” said the witness, Summy Ullah.

The tensions escalated from there, with the wanted killer using his phone to record Sibley and his friends.

“Y’all stabbed my brother in the chest saying ‘We Muslim, we don’t let gay s—t around here,’” Pena says in the video. “We’re gay. We’re just here. It’s no animosity.”

Sibley, according to Pena, told the men “We may be gay, but we’re listening to our music — but it’s no hate. It’s all love.’”

When the man recording the group walked off Sibley chased him and was stabbed, video obtained by the Daily News shows.

“You stabbed my brother and I seen him wobbling,” Pena said. “I had to run to him and hold his wound as blood is dripping on my hands. And his blood is my clothes.”

“Just because he is trying to let people know that we’re gay, we exist, we don’t disrespect,’” he added. “You all killed him.”

Medics rushed Sibley, stabbed in the upper body, to Maimonides Medical Center but he could not be saved.

“Every time before I go to sleep I would call O’Shae and we would have a conversation. Just ‘Hey bro, you good?’ Every day, every day, every day,” Pena recalled. “I miss O’Shae. When I go through s—t like this the person I called was always O’Shae.”

The killer ran off and is being sought.

“O’Shae was the salt to my pepper, the peanut butter to my jelly,” Pena said on FaceBook Live. “We were just having a good time ... They killed him. They killed him. Right in my face. Right in my arms.”

“I’ll be damned if I sit my a— down and just chill,” Pena added. “Y’all f---ed with the wrong one because y’all took him from me. And that’s all I had. Everyone knows O’Shae was my plus one. O’Shae was me. Ain’t no Otis without Shae. That is all I had, bro. That’s all I had. That’s all I had.”

Authorities shot a man after they say he fired shots at a Jewish school in Memphis, Tennessee, Monday afternoon.

Memphis police were called to the Margolin Hebrew Academy-Feinstone Yeshiva of the South around 12:20 p.m. ET after an armed man tried to enter the school, according to Memphis Police Assistant Chief Don Crowe.

Police say the suspect tried to enter the building but couldn’t get inside. “When he could not gain entry, he fired shots outside the school,” Crowe said. No one was injured at the school.

School officials gave police a photo and a description of the suspect’s maroon colored Dodge Ram pickup truck.

A short time later, Memphis police officers found a vehicle matching the description and stopped the driver. The suspect got out of the truck with a gun in his hand and was shot by an officer, Crowe said.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition.

Crowe said authorities are investigating a motive and it was “way too early” to know whether the suspect had any connection to the school or whether the incident could be a hate crime.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation with assistance from the FBI. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Bartlett Police Department helped in finding the suspect.

In a news release, Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis said, “I am proud of the vigilant and quick response of MPD officers who mitigated a potential mass shooting situation today.”

“Many thanks to our neighboring jurisdictions for also providing critical information to stop the suspect’s actions,” the chief added.

The Margolin Hebrew Academy-Feinstone Yeshiva of the South serves students from pre-K through 12th grade, according to the school’s website. The school teaches both day students and boarding school students who live in dormitories.

CNN’s Zoe Sottile, Amy Simonson, and Devon Sayers contributed to this report.

    U.S.
Peter Navarro Warns 'New Civil War' Will Break Out Over Trump Indictment
By Ewan Palmer On 7/25/23 at 4:15 AM EDT

Peter Navarro, a White House trade adviser in Donald Trump's administration, has warned that a second civil war will break out in the U.S. because of the Democratic Party's alleged targeting of the former president.

Speaking on a video released via his Substack, Navarro cited a November 2022 survey from the University of Notre Dame's Rooney Center for the Study of American Democracy, which revealed that around half of Republicans and more than third of Democrats believe America is on the brink of civil war.

Navarro, who remains a top Trump loyalist, claimed that if a civil war were to break out now, it would be the Democrtats' fault because of how they have "weaponized" federal agencies such as the FBI. He warned that these actions "will come back to haunt" the party if Trump is re-elected president.

Numerous Republicans figures have claimed the criminal investigations into Trump—including the classified documents case where the former president has pleaded not guilty to 37 charges and Special Counsel Jack Smith's January 6 probe, where Trump is reported to be facing another federal indictment—are politically motivated attempts to stop the 2024 GOP primary front runner from winning the next election.

"In their quest for power, radical elements within the Democrat Party have abandoned any pretense of fairness, tolerance, and justice," Navarro said. "In their woke new world, Democrat strategists use unscrupulous lawfare tactics to skew our election system, even as weaponized bureaucracies like the Department of Justice, FBI and National Archives—now under Democratic control—seek to destroy the Republican Party and its de facto leader, Donald Trump.

"The Democrat activists and strategists now driving this nation towards a second civil war have neither justice nor righteousness on their side," Navarro added. "My strong admonition to these Democrats—as I appeal to the wiser in your party—is this: Back this anti-democratic truck up before it runs over you.

"Do you not understand that the longer you engage in your assaults on American families and values, the more likely a new civil war becomes? And do you not understand that the perverse precedents you are creating through your weaponized bureaucracies and woke attacks will come back to haunt you as soon as Republicans take back Trump's America from your cold woke hands."

Navarro has been contacted for further comment.

Trump is reported to be facing charges relating to conspiracy to defraud the United States, violation of civil rights and tampering with a witness, victim, or informant as part of Smith's investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 election and the events leading up to the January 6 attack.

The clip of Navarro was posted on Twitter by Ron Filipkowski, a former federal prosecutor and co-host of the YouTube show MAGA Uncovered, Track & Report on the Right-Wing.

The footage was also shared by former Illinois congressman Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on the House Select committee who investigated the January 6 attack.

"This is insane," Kinzinger wrote. "Every Republican who doesn't push back on this because of their own selfish ambition is responsible."

Navarro is set to stand trial in September after refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena issued by the House Select Committee investigating the Capitol riot. He has pleaded not guilty to a charge of contempt of Congress.

Former White House adviser Steve Bannon was sentenced to four months in jail in November 2022 after being found guilty of contempt of Congress for defying his congressional subpoena related to the Januar

Trump got another one killed. But at least this time it was one pf his own.

FBI Kills ‘MAGA TRUMPER’ Linked to Biden Death Threats in Raid on Utah Home

    August 9, 2023 5:18 PM

A Donald Trump supporter, linked to death threats directed toward U.S. president Joe Biden, vice president Kamala Harris, and Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, was killed during an FBI raid on his home in Provo, Utah.

Craig Robertson, 75, was first identified as the suspect by the New York Post. Robertson described himself as a “MAGA TRUMPER” in social-media posts. According to two unnamed sources, Robertson was armed during the lethal exchange, the Associated Press reports.

“The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously,” The FBI said in a statement. “In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under review by the FBI’s Inspection Division.”

On Sunday, Robertson made a Facebook post alluding to his intention to kill Biden during the president’s visit to the state. “I hear Biden is coming to Utah,” the Air Force veteran wrote. “Digging out my old ghille [sic] suit and cleaning the dust off the M24 sniper rifle. Welcome, Buffoon-in-chief!”

In an earlier status update, Robertson wrote of a “WONDERFUL DREAM” he had of himself in a parking garage in Washington, D.C., in gory detail.

“I was standing over the body of the U.S. Attorney General, Merrick Garland, with a bullet hole dead center in his forehead. In my hand was my suppressed Smith & Weston M&P 9mm, smoke wafting from the muzzle,” Robertson wrote, entirely in capital letters, on Facebook.

“The Star Spangled Banner playing quietly in the distance. I thought to myself; ‘What an amazing, patriotic moment’ as shivers of liberty and freedom swelled my heart for our amazingly great country.”

An agency complaint was filed on Tuesday asking a court for an arrest warrant citing the post as a “knowing and willful true threat to kill or cause injury to President Biden.”

In another post from September 2022, Robertson reportedly wrote: “The time is right for a presidential assassination or two. First Joe[,] then Kamala!!!”

Biden is expected to land in Utah later on Wednesday and visit a Veteran Affairs hospital on Thursday.

‘Deadly Dangerous!’ CNN’s McCabe Rips Trump For ‘Targeting Messages’ Against Biden and Others Amid ‘MAGA Trumper’ Shooting By FBI
    By Tommy ChristopherAug 10th, 2023, 11:29 am

CNN analyst and former FBI chief Andrew McCabe ripped ex-President Donald Trump’s “targeting” language in the wake of an FBI shooting of a Trump fan who made threats against President Joe Biden and others.

A Utah man named Craig Robertson was shot and killed Wednesday when FBI agents tried to serve an arrest warrant over alleged threats to Biden, as well as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Attorney General Merrick Garland, and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

On Wednesday night’s edition of CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, guest host John King drew a line — if indirectly — between Trump’s rhetoric and the slain self-described “MAGA Trumper,” and asked how law enforcement deals with that:

KING: So help us understand help law enforcement deals with this. Nobody is directly tying the former president to this, but in the charging documents, the FBI does include one thread posted online in which the man here refers himself to as a “MAGA Trumper.”

And you can’t ignore the overlap of the people he was threatening with people the former president has gone after in speeches in his own online posts. Number one, how do you connect the dots, I guess, between free speech and potential threats? And what does law enforcement do about that?

    MCCABE: It’s really hard, John.

They are in such a tough spot now. The FBI, DHS, other law enforcement entities, they are monitoring all kinds of extremist rhetoric, threatening rhetoric online every single day. Their job is to figure out who is an actual threat, and who are the rest of the people who are just boasting or chest pounding or whatever they’re doing online, and that is not an exact science. It is something that they literally have to monitor every day.

Now, we’ll also say that this is a perfect example of a case that shows how responsible careful political leaders of both parties are very careful not to engage in this sort of violent rhetoric and targeting speech that we hear from Donald Trump very frequently.

And the reason is that the most extreme supporters of those political leaders and certainly those who follow Donald Trump, we have seen will actually follow through on some of these comments.

We know that from the January 6 people who showed up on the Capitol on January 6, many of them said, we came because Donald Trump told us, so this person is a perfect example of what happens when someone like Donald Trump encourages sort of rhetoric, targets people online.

Some of his most extreme supporters get that targeting message and they are prepared to act upon it and that is deadly dangerous.
