Comer insists his job was ‘never to impeach’ as GOP doubts grow about Biden impeachment vote

Republicans had hoped that Hunter Biden could have helped prove their central allegation that his father, Joe Biden, engaged in a pay-to-play scheme and acted corruptly while in office.

But Hunter Biden refused to testify behind closed doors. And now the GOP may simply assume what they haven’t been able to prove, that the bribery scheme actually happened.

“Well, I mean, if he doesn’t show up, then I guess we’ll just have to wrap it up without him and assume that these were bribes from foreign countries,” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer told CNN, adding that unproven allegations that Hunter Biden was involved in human trafficking and money laundering could also be assumed to be true.

In an interview with CNN, Comer gave his latest insight into the committee’s investigation, lowering expectations as doubts begin to grow within GOP ranks about whether it will actually lead to a successful impeachment vote of the president.

Comer said it doesn’t matter to him if Biden is ultimately impeached, arguing his true intent is to conduct the far-reaching probe and then pursue legislation to ban influence peddling. He said that his panel would soon issue a report with criminal referrals, saying he hadn’t decided yet whether to refer the president to the Justice Department for prosecution.

“I would vote to impeach him, but I’m not going to lose any sleep whether he gets impeached or not because we know the Senate’s not going to convict,” Comer said of the Democratic-controlled Senate. He insisted: “My job was never to impeach.”

Hunter Biden offered to testify publicly but not behind closed doors, arguing Republicans would have distorted his testimony. Instead, the younger Biden showed up at Comer’s committee last week where they were moving to hold him in contempt of Congress for defying their subpoena seeking a deposition behind closed doors.

Biden’s team called on Congress to issue the president’s son a new subpoena for testimony on Friday but House Republicans said they would move forward with contempt unless a private deposition was scheduled.

Comer said he wouldn’t have stopped Hunter Biden from answering questions as Republicans began to yell questions at him, but he reiterated that he must be deposed behind closed doors first before sitting for a public hearing.

“Well, the hearing for the media would be more entertainment than substantive,” Comer said. “The deposition is substantive.”

Even though his yearlong probe has not proven that Joe Biden benefited from his son’s foreign business dealings, Comer argued it has uncovered new details about the surface-level interactions the president had with his son’s business activities.

The majority of these claims stem from a business associate of the president’s son, Devon Archer, who testified to the House Oversight Committee last year that there were “maybe 20 times” when Joe Biden was placed on speakerphone during meetings with his and Hunter Biden’s business partners.
But Archer said “nothing” of importance was ever discussed during those calls.

A spokesperson for Hunter Biden’s legal team accused Comer of being “afraid of the facts” and reiterated their demand that he only be allowed to testify in public.

“He and his Republican colleagues aren’t interested in getting any answers,” the spokesperson said. “They’d rather keep peddling lies and innuendo to keep this farce of an investigation going because hearing from Hunter would put it to an end.”

CNN has reached out to the White House for comment. White House spokesperson Ian Sams has repeatedly dismissed the allegations from the GOP-led investigation as “baseless attacks” and “playing politics.”

Comer has said bank records show that the Biden family and their associates made over $24 million in foreign business deals, including from countries like China and Russia, but has yet to prove that the president personally profited or was involved in any of these deals.

Comer has also seized on an internal FBI document containing unverified allegations that the president was involved in an illegal foreign bribery scheme. The form memorializes claims from an FBI informant, but it doesn’t provide proof that the allegations are true.

“Absolutely,” Comer said, arguing the probe has been a success and also noting the revelations about Chinese sources of money to Hunter Biden undercut a claim his father made in 2020 when he was running for president.

Democrats believe it’s been a success because they have used the probe to continue to tarnish Biden’s standing in the run-up to November – but lack the evidence to prove the president did anything illegal.

“His goal is to impeach the president,” said Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat from Florida who has sparred with Comer. “What he’s admitting is what a lot of other Republicans have said, which is, well, so long as they see that this charade, what they’re doing up here is hurting the President’s poll numbers, they’re going to continue to do that.”

In the interview, Comer took a swipe at “little Moskowitz,” saying he has used the hearings to “show his rear-end.”

Moskowitz responded: “I have no beef with the chairman. I’m just trying to hold him accountable.”

    Doubts grow about impeachment vote
The comments come as many Republicans are growing skeptical the probe will lead to a successful impeachment vote, particularly in their razor-thin majority, a sign of the challenges ahead for Speaker Mike Johnson as the impeachment inquiry plods forward and their restive base wants action.

A number of Republicans in swing districts, in particular, say much more needs to be uncovered before they’d vote to make Biden just the fourth president ever to be impeached.

“I think in order to get the Republican conference to impeach the president, I think that you’ve got an extraordinary amount of groundwork that would have to be laid that is not there right now. Said another way, the votes aren’t there right now,” GOP Rep. Garret Graves of Louisiana told CNN.

Even GOP proponents of impeaching the president are growing uncertain about whether they can get the votes to impeach him.

GOP Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, poured cold water on the prospect that enough Republicans support ultimately impeaching Biden.

“I think it should go to the House floor for a vote, but I don’t know if we have the will to do it. I don’t know if it would pass, quite honestly,” Nehls said.

After the Oversight Committee’s vote of the contempt resolution against the president’s son, which included sparring on both sides of the aisle, Comer reflected that hearings from his committee are “more entertainment than substantive.”

His panel has only had one hearing on the impeachment inquiry into the president and one of the Republicans’ own witnesses said that the House did not yet have the evidence to support articles of impeachment. Everything else has happened behind closed doors in private depositions.

“Nobody wants to wrap this up more than I do,” Comer told reporters after the vote.

Now we see the despicable rage exposed.
For 8 years they have pursued, and still pursue, a campaign of scorched earth where Trump AND TRUMP supporters, aimed at destroying them at every opportunity, no matter what it takes, no matter how low they must go.
Over 40 investigations including 2 failed impeachments.
Attacks based on lies on Trump family.
Attacks of anyone Trump promotes in the most underhanded and ethically bankrupt manner we have seen in our government.

And now that Hunter Biden and his corrupt family are being exposed the despicables grab at any utterance to bring discredit on the process.

    Liberal rage noted.
    We laugh at your upset.

All the Republicans need is evidence and credible witnesses. So far, they've produced nothing they dare take before a judge.

On the other hand, there's no shortage of evidence and witnesses to Trump's crimes and it's all evidence that will stand up in court and people who will testify under oath.

The real upset is seen in people who voted for and supported a criminal who defrauded banks and the American people, sexually assaulted a middle aged woman, and thinks it's his right to walk into dressing rooms where teen girls are naked.

Now we all know that when the Feds publish a report, even a relatively easy one, they are subject to revision.
But this, well, it's an exception to the exceptions we're used to from the Feds.

U.S. Employment Reports Off by More Than 400,000 Jobs (msn.com)

U.S. Employment Reports Off by More Than 400,000 Jobs©Craig Adderly/Pexels

The recent U.S. job reports have revealed a startling revision: 439,000 jobs previously reported through November 2023 were erased. This adjustment suggests a significant overestimation in job growth, challenging the perceived health of the job market.

Understanding these changes is crucial, as job reports influence market trends, treasury yields, and the Federal Reserve's monetary policies, all of which directly impact the American consumer's financial situation. The accuracy of these reports is vital for a realistic assessment of the economy.

Originally, the job market appeared robust, with optimistic growth figures. However, the revised data paints a different picture. The elimination of 439,000 jobs indicates that initial estimates significantly inflated the health of the job market.

These revisions are not just statistical adjustments. They reflect the real state of employment and have profound implications for economic perceptions and policymaking.

One notable factor in the job reports is the increase in government sector hiring. In December 2023 alone, the sector added 52,000 jobs. Over the last three months of that year, government jobs averaged 50,000 per month, significantly bolstering the overall employment figures.

This rise in government sector employment plays a key role in understanding the dynamics of the job market and its apparent health.

Job reports often intersect with political narratives. The current administration, for instance, has been criticized for overstating its role in job creation.

While it's true that the economy has recovered many jobs lost during the pandemic, the net job creation under the current administration is a more modest figure. This highlights the importance of separating political narratives from economic realities.

The manufacturing sector, crucial for its economic ripple effects, has been decreasing for 14 consecutive months.

While the sector added back all jobs lost during the pandemic and created additional jobs, the overall growth remains limited. The state of manufacturing jobs is a vital indicator of economic health, affecting various other sectors.

The labor force participation rate stands at a historically low 62.5%. In December, 683,000 workers dropped out of the labor force.

These trends indicate a shift in the workforce, with more people opting for part-time work or leaving the workforce altogether, reflecting broader economic and social changes.

A record high of 8.69 million Americans now hold multiple jobs to make ends meet. This increase in multiple jobholders points to the challenges many face in coping with the high cost of living and the cumulative 17.4% inflation rate under the current administration.

The rise in part-time and multiple jobs signals changes in the nature of employment and financial stability.

House Republican worries his colleagues don't have 'the will' to impeach Joe Biden: 'I don't know if it would pass'

    • House Republicans' impeachment inquiry continues, but many aren't sure it will lead to impeachment.

    • Even one of Trump's staunchest acolytes in the House says he doesn't know if it would pass.

    • "I don't know if we have the will to do it," said Rep. Troy Nehls.
When Republicans retook the House majority, perhaps one of the safest predictions one could make is that they would seek to impeach President Joe Biden.

GOP candidates campaigned on it, rank-and-file lawmakers had already filed several resolutions to do so, and Rep. James Comer of Kentucky began laying out his case for investigating the Biden family even before the midterm elections.

But despite a unanimous vote among Republicans in December to initiate an impeachment inquiry, several of them are openly declaring that an actual successful impeachment vote is anything but certain.

"I think it should go to the House floor for a vote, but I don't know if we have the will to do it," Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas told CNN. "I don't know if it would pass, quite honestly."

Nehls, one of the first House Republicans to endorse former President Donald Trump in 2024, has a knack for unfortunate honesty.

The Texas Republican recently declared that he wouldn't support a compromise border security and immigration deal from the Senate because it could "help Joe Biden's approval rating," and he said in December that he wanted to give Trump "a little bit of ammo to fire back" by impeaching Biden.

But Nehls isn't alone in his prediction about impeachment's fate.

Even Comer, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee who's leading the charge on impeachment, told CNN that his "job was never to impeach" the president.

"I would vote to impeach him," Comer told CNN. "But I'm not going to lose any sleep whether he gets impeached or not because we know the Senate's not going to convict."

Republicans, at this point, may be in a bit of a bind.

Though they have poked holes in some of Biden's arguments about impropriety, Republican investigators have yet to prove that he was significantly involved in his son Hunter's dealings with foreign countries.

Yet if they fail to impeach Biden, Republicans risk anger and backlash from the GOP base, which has been primed by both political rhetoric and right-wing media to expect an impeachment.

In the near term, the House may vote to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for his refusal to sit for a closed-door deposition — even though he has agreed to testify publicly and even showed up in person at a hearing on the matter last week.

Raskin demands Trump Org turn over business records in probe of foreign payments
    Rebecca Beitsch

The top Democrat on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee is asking the Trump Organization to turn over the entirety of its business records, arguing it’s the only way the panel can understand the full extent to which former President Trump profited from foreign governments while in office.

The letter from Rep. leaving the page." data-wf-tooltip-position="bottom">Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) follows a report from the committee concluding Trump earned nearly $8 million from foreign governments while in office.

Trump failed to disclose those profits to Congress, something Raskin said violates the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, which bars leaders from accepting anything of value from foreign governments without the blessing of lawmakers.

Digging into a letter from the Trump Organization after it rebuffed his calls earlier this year to return the profits, Raskin said the written rejection from the Trump team is an “admission that, without congressional consent, he collected while in office at least $7.8 million from at least 20 foreign governments—with the People’s Republic of China and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia being his leading patrons.”

Democrats acknowledged the limitations in their report when it was released earlier this month. They note gaps in the information they received relative to Trump’s business empire, as well as the fact that accounting firm Mazars stopped producing records won via court battle, citing a notification they got from Trump’s attorneys that referenced a conversation with the panel’s GOP leadership.

However, the lion’s share of the documented foreign money — some $5.6 million — flowed from China, which, along with other countries, primarily patronized three properties: Trump hotels in Washington and Las Vegas and Trump Tower in New York.

That includes $5.4 million spent over nearly three years by the Chinese state-affiliated Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), which had secured space at Trump Tower.

The Trump Organization wrote in a letter last week that many of the leases that contributed millions toward that figure were signed before Trump was elected and noted that he donated those profits as well as his presidential salary to the Treasury.

To Raskin, that largely served as confirmation of the committee’s work.

“You conspicuously do not dispute the millions of dollars that foreign governments spent at Trump-owned properties, the identities of the corrupt and autocratic governments that spent those sums, or the myriad policy favors and changes that those governments were seeking to obtain from the Trump Administration—and, in numerous cases, did obtain—at the time they were filling Trump’s pockets,” Raskin wrote in the letter obtained by The Hill.

“Nor do you dispute that the former President never came to Congress to disclose the foreign government payments he wanted to accept or to seek congressional consent to keep them—as the Foreign Emoluments Clause required him to do.”

Trump’s team wrote that the “vast majority” of foreign government funding it took in while he was in office came from leases like those secured by ICBC and that it turned over 100 percent of the “estimated profits” from its hospitality properties.

But Raskin said by relying on estimates of profits and only from Trump’s hotels and towers, they are excluding income that may have come in through some 500 different Trump-affiliated businesses.

“[Trump] did the one thing the Constitution clearly prohibits: he accepted payments from foreign governments without congressional approval. In any case, you don’t quantify what ‘vast majority’ actually means. We’d like to do an independent audit to find out whether this statement is true,” Raskin wrote.

Earlier work from the committee found Trump donated around $450,000 in profits from his businesses to the Treasury over his four years in office — a figure that represents a significant gap from the almost $8 million in profits found by Democrats as they reviewed a fraction of Trump business records.

Raskin also took a dig at an argument Trump’s attorneys recently made in his election interference case, arguing the trial should be postponed until 2026 due to the volume of evidence they’d have to review in the case, suggesting that if stacked it would reach higher than the Washington Monument.

Raskin suggested the true scope of Trump’s foreign profits could also stretch as high.

“Perhaps if you pile up all the foreign state money former President Trump received while in office, the stack will reach as high as the Washington Monument, and we could call it the ‘Washington Emolument,’” he wrote.

The Hill has reached out to the Trump Organization and the Trump campaign for comment.

The treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans have done this to themselves and it was decades in the making. It actually started when the adopted the strategy of just lie, lie and lie some more. Use the right wing false propaganda noise machine to try and out shout reality. Which was prefect for the fossil fuel industry who had bought and paid for them got them to go against the science of global warming/climate change. Then that evolved into conservative/Republicans being anti science in general. then they became anti education and especially higher education Which resulted in conservative/Republicans electing stupid and ignorant (two different things) people to congress. Which is what set them up to elect Trump, the most stupid, ignorant, mentally ill, incompetent, corrupt, deadly and treasonous president. And so now there they are trying to go up against reality and the real world. And they are so stupid ignorant and detached from reality they don't stand a prayer against even just normal people. And nowhere does that glare more than in their stupid ignorant and phony investigations and impeachments. All they manage to do is make fools of themselves, blow up in their faces, and become like shooting fish in a barrel for the Democrats.

Biggs obviously had his attack all planned out. And it is hilarious to watch him realize he's in over his head, try to bail out on his own attack and get shot in the ass on his way out.

Hunter Biden's friend schools Republican Andy Biggs during impeachment hearing

The transcript of a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing is being shared online, and some excerpts are causing mockery of at least one of the Republican committee members.

Last week, Hunter Biden's friend Kevin Morris, a Hollywood lawyer, testified about his relationship with the younger Biden as part of the Republicans' impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden.

Among the questions asked were some concerning details uncovered by special counsel David Weiss that suggested Hunter Biden was living a "lavish" lifestyle. According to Morris, he helped Hunter Biden pay off a Porsche so he could sell it and get out from under the loan.

Another incident describes a fancy home purchased quickly, which Morris explained was for security purposes due to reporters chasing Hunter Biden.

"And you've also provided loans to Hunter Biden in order to pay for a Porsche. Is that correct?" it was asked.

"Not exactly," said Morris, according to the transcript. "The Porsche was upside down. And, you know, he was trying to get rid of it, and he was behind. So it was upside down. He couldn't give it back until he paid $11,000."

National security expert, Marcy Wheeler, cited Weiss' indictment of Hunter Biden. "From January through October 15, 2020, an entertainment lawyer (hereafter 'Personal Friend') provided the Defendant with substantial financial support, including approximately $200,000 to rent a lavish house on a canal in Venice, California; $11,000 in payments for his Porsche; and other individual items. In total, the Defendant had Personal Friend pay over $1.2 million to third parties for the Defendant's benefit from January through October 15, 2020."

Morris testified to the committee: "I wasn't paying for anything. I was loaning Hunter Biden the money for things. At the time I met him, he was in danger in his house. Paparazzi was there. People were coming up to his door with cameras, saying, 'We just want to talk to him.' People were yelling from outside of the bushes, 'Hunter Biden, come out. Hunter Biden, come out.' Melissa's five months pregnant. I got him security. And he needed to move. And so — and we had to find a place quickly. We had to find a place that had privacy. And we ended up with that house."

Weiss suggested that Hunter Biden was sitting on more than $1 million that he could have been paying to the IRS, but was sent to third parties instead. Morris explained it wasn't Biden's money, it was his, and he wouldn't hand it over, rather he made the payments directly as part of his loan.

Not long after, Morris clashed with committee member Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ).

ALSO READ: Alina Habba is persona non grata at her Pennsylvania law school

Morris, who is admitted to the Bar in California and New York, explained that he researched the ethics of loaning money to clients. "I'll just clarify, Congressman, that the California rules of professional procedure, which I've looked at, there's nothing wrong with a loan to a client when the client is fully informed and has complete knowledge."

Biggs replied, "Yeah, I've read the rules in California as well, and I'm choosing not to get into that right now. I mean, we might get into —"

"Yeah, becaue I'm right," Morris interrupted Biggs.

"We might get into that later, I don't know, but we don't need to get into it now," Biggs said.

House Republicans cry James Comer's "clueless investigation" is a "disaster": report

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., is losing support among his GOP colleagues over his handling of the leaving the page." data-wf-tooltip-position="bottom">Biden impeachment probe, with some declaring the inquiry chocks up to a "clueless investigation" at best and a "disaster" at worst.

“One would be hard pressed to find the best moment for James Comer in the Oversight Committee,” one House Republican lawmaker, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, told The Messenger. “It’s been a parade of embarrassments.”

As the 2024 presidential election draws closer, Comer's impeachment investigation is nearing its conclusion with no hard-hitting accusations to level against President Joe Biden. More than a dozen Republican lawmakers, senior aides and strategists told The Messenger that how little the probe has accomplished has whittled down the faith they had in the Kentucky Republican.

Some top Republicans in the party take issue with the investigation's lack of focus, with the probe following obscure lines of inquiry, including claims of influence peddling and foreign bribery, and looking Hunter Biden's artwork sales and loan agreements between the president and his brother.

“Comer has cast a wide net and caught very little fish. That is a big problem for him,” a personal Donald Trump ally told the outlet.

Republicans' growing distrust in the chairman, however, does not sway their trust in the grounds for the probe. GOP sources said that the thousands of financial documents and slate of testimony from witnesses have offered viable points of contention, including allegations that then-Vice President Biden was connected to a bribery plot in Ukraine.

The problem lies in Comer's mismanagement of the investigation, which some believe has fumbled their chances of landing an impeachment of the president by the 2024 election.

“James Comer continues to embarrass himself and House Republicans. He screws up over and over and over,” a source close to GOP leadership told The Messenger. “I don’t know how Republicans actually impeach the president based on his clueless investigation and lack of leadership.”

Comer's back and forth with Hunter Biden over the president's son sitting for a closed-door deposition in the investigation was a common example of such "embarrassments."

Earlier this month, Republicans were readying to hold the younger Biden in contempt of Congress for dodging the deposition, despite Hunter Biden expressing interest in providing a public testimony. Two weeks ago, during an Oversight Committee hearing intended to discuss the contempt resolution, the younger Biden made a surprise appearance that sparked outcry and dissension among the lawmakers.

“It seems like they got played by Hunter Biden,” one senior House GOP aide told the outlet. “It was a disaster. They looked like buffoons.”

GOP members have also taken issue with Comer's Fox News and Newsmax appearances about the probe, where they bemoan his promises of "bombshell information" that he later fails to deliver on, The Messenger reports. One source cited the committee's first impeachment hearing in September, widely recognized as a blunder, with one star GOP witness acknowledging the investigation did not yet have enough evidence to move forward with an impeachment.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., also told the outlet that Republicans have privately complained about the committee's last hearing. “Republicans believe the Oversight Committee has been a complete failure in all these theatrical hearings that never deliver on their promise,” Moskowitz said, explaining that after the last hearing Republican committee members told him it "was a complete debacle for them.”

“This is why we shouldn't pick our chairman based on how much money they raise,” another member told Moskowitz, according to the Florida Democrat.

ATrump ally told The Messenger that Comer “set the bar too high” for what constitutes an impeachable offense by trying to prove that Joe Biden accepted a direct payment from his son or brother, James Biden, during the committee panel's dive into the transactions, which the White House dismissed as regular loan repayments.

Proving such a transaction was not necessary, the Trump ally said, explaining that the bar shouldn't be that high for impeachment. “Congress determines what is a high crime and misdemeanor,” the source said.

A Comer spokesperson defended the legislator, saying he has "made it clear this investigation's legislative purpose is to ban influence peddling and reform federal ethics laws."

"Now that we are in an impeachment inquiry, the Oversight Committee, along with the Committees on the Judiciary and Ways and Means, are continuing to follow the facts to determine whether President Biden's conduct warrants articles of impeachment," the spokesperson added.

One Republican lawmaker told The Messenger he elevated his concerns about Comer's leadership to Speaker Mike Johnson, whose office, according to the lawmaker, said Johnson was aware of the issue and agreed but couldn't really take any action. A spokesperson for the speaker denied that the exchange occurred.

In a statement to the outlet, Johnson said he is "fully supportive" of Comer's work.

"I am grateful for the superb efforts of Chairman Comer," Johnson said. "Without his and the other investigators’ work, we wouldn’t have uncovered the millions in foreign funds going to the Biden family, the dozens of exchanges between the President and Hunter Biden’s clients, and the litany of lies the White House has told."

Comer's critics, however, have their eyes set on the calendar, with the time between now and the 2024 presidential election dwindling to under 10 months. For them, the probe into the president and his family, has lagged since the GOP gained control of the House last January.

"You have to start producing," a Trump ally told The Messenger. "The base is starting to get more and more frustrated with him because they see all this smoke but they don’t see the movement."

If you see someone disparaging the sources for this story and want a good laugh do a political forum word search for "Loudermillk" and check the sources on a story about him. You will not have too look far down the list to get the laugh.

Things are going from bad to worse with the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republican clown car show.
