Lauren Boebert among 40 Republicans who got millions from spending bill they voted against

Among the 83 House Republicans who voted to halt a nearly $460 billion spending package designed to fund the government and stop an imminent shutdown, 40 of them secured millions of dollars to bankroll pet projects in their states, according to Business Insider.

The spending bill passed the House on Wednesday.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) nicknamed it "Swamp Ominibusm," called it a "monstrosity" and claimed it earmarked money for the Green New Deal.

But Business Insider reported that, despite her criticizing the spending package, it included more than $20 million that she personally sought out for various interests in her district.

The earmarks Boebert asked for, according to the news outlet, include a $5 million Wolf Creek water reservoir revamp, $2.2 million for water infrastructure in Craig, Colorado and millions of dollars to improve highways.

ALSO READ: A criminologist explains why half of America does not care about Trump's crimes

When approached by Business Insider, Boebert did not comment.

Another member of Congress who tried to block the bill despite having his own projects included in it was Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN). "Everything that we've asked for, I could defend," he told Insider. "I don't think you can defend some of that stuff that's in there. It's just too much."

Like Boebert, Burchett tried to sink the bill which included $12 million he'd asked for that would benefit his own district. The earmarks included $2.3 million for the University of Tennessee Medical Center, $2 million for an affordable housing project in Knoxville, and $2 million for a healthcare engineering center.

Insider reported: "Plenty of Republicans are willing — in the words of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — to "vote no and take the dough."

The story also noted that Democrats Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL) and Mark Takano (D-CA) each tried to shoot down the bill over its gun policies, which they said included rollbacks of the background check system.

In a way it was comical yesterday when multiple reports came to light of Speaker Johnson begging treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans to not act out during President Biden's SOTU in multiple ways. He literally made several different pleas. And the question became will it work? Will treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans behave themselves? And the nearly universal answer from Democratic strategists was "I hope not."

The whole key to a SOTU address is that especially in presidential election years most Americans still aren't paying much attention to politics but they will tune into the SOTU. So its the biggest audience a president can hope to get early in an election year. Its a chance to make a favorable impression and kick off the campaign.

And the biggest problem President Biden has is the carefully crafted right wing false propaganda that he's too old feeble and demented to be president. And as the analysts pointed out what President Biden needed the most was to be able to go off script. React in the moment. Mentally parry and lunge by countering the inappropriate interruptions. And of course the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans played right into President Biden's hands giving him some of the best moments of the address.

Lauren Boebert ridiculed after saying she won't even 'hold back in church'

Despite the closed door efforts by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) asking his fellow Republican lawmakers to restrain from any kind of ugliness during this year's State of the Union, at least two mavericks are making no promises that they can help themselves.

“I don’t even promise my pastor I’m going to hold back in church," Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) told CNN's Melanie Zanona today.

And Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) also was asked if she could behave during President Joe Biden's speech on Thursday night and she shot back: "Decorum broke a long time ago."

"Elect a clown, expect a circus," Republicans Against Trump posted.

"Boebert goes to Church," asked @Geo_Is_Pissed.

@DogginTrump tweeted: "Can any of the House Republicans spell decorum?"

"$100 says MTG has no idea what the word 'decorum' means," says @tomtomkavanaugh.

Others appeared to remind the critics that it was former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) who ripped up Trump's speech after he concluded.

@bobbyjoeybilly captioned a gif of Pelosi ripping up the speech: "Ah yes decorum."

Greene notably put the spotlight on herself when she hurled insults at Biden while he was speaking about how "some Republicans want Medicare and Social Security to sunset" and Greene shouting "You lie!" and "Liar!"

The incident echoed Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) who in 2009 broke into President Barack Obama's speech yapping, "You lie!" to a chorus of boos. And Obama himself saying "Not true."

The two lawmakers' unwillingness to agree to hold back their heckling came after Speaker Johnson on Wednesday huddled in a GOP conference calling for "decorum" toward Biden.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) confirmed he told the body "we should be professional, we should maintain a high standard of decorum."

"He's reminding us to be respectful of the institution," said Rep. Mark Alford (R-MO). "And to the president of the United States and the office, whether we agree or not."

People who try to overthrow the results of a free and fair election simply because Trump lost are in fact and in deed traitors to the United States of America and our Constitution. That is not speech. That is an act of actual treason. And people who go along with it are traitors as well.

Oh yes the poor poor pitiful me eternally wounded little snowflake victims. Everything is so unfair and the Democrats are meanies. When if they had any empathy they might consider Boebert's plight. She's lost her business, her marriage, and no it looks like she's going to lose her job with kids to take care of. And its like Boebert's got a lot of skills, money, or a wealthy mommy and daddy to fall back on.What's she gong to do? Wait tab;es? Fans Only? Escort?

Boebert comes up short again in new district despite Trump endorsement: report

    Tom Boggioni

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO ) is learning the hard way that she has a lot of work to do to get voters in Colorado's 4th District to back her third bid for the House of Representatives — even with Donald Trump's endorsement.

The controversial GOP lawmaker's last few months have been filled with scandal and turmoil since she abandoned the 3rd District for a safer seat in the more solidly conservative 4th, and she's still having trouble making inroads with voters at GOP get-togethers.

According to a report from the Independent, Boebert headed off to the Phillips County Event Center last Sunday for a voter event hosted by the Phillips, Sedgwick and Yuma County Republicans. She went with a recent endorsement from Trump, who said she is a "proven conservative and effective leader who delivers for Colorado, and our America First agenda.

ALSO READ: ‘We're wounded:’ Speaker Mike Johnson struggles to lead GOP after ‘unnecessary purging’

Boebert was reportedly well received as she boasted to attendees, " Yesterday, the greatest president of the United States of America, President Donald J. Trump, has fully and completely endorsed me in this race. Because he knows he needs me alongside of him in the fight when he returns to Washington, D.C."

But, in a straw poll at the end of the day, the picture didn't look too rosy.

According to the report, "that endorsement — which she repeatedly highlighted during the forum — still didn’t stop voters from choosing longtime CD4 politician Jerry Sonnenberg as the winner of the straw poll. [Trump supporter Ted] Harvey came in second, followed by Boebert."

One longtime resident of the district claimed Boebert has her work cut out for her.

Crystal Frank, who teaches history and American government at Northeastern Junior College, told the Independent, "The bottom line is, CD4 is … still a strong, conservative agricultural district. They want somebody that was raised here that understands the agriculture of this unique district, from the north to the south, that understands our water out here, that understands our natural resources, battles, our energy battles, our livestock and crop battles.”

She suggested locals “are struggling with her coming into this district and, quite frankly, with any candidate that does not have a background in this district, it’s going to be a heavy struggle for the active voters of this district,” before adding, "She’s had several supporters out here in this area, financial supporters the last few years, that will no longer give to her."

'He got bit by the Liz Cheney bug': Boebert disses retiring Ken Buck in his own district

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) talked smack about a Trump-skeptic conservative from the Colorado Republican delegation at a recent gathering with voters in his own district.

According to the Colorado Sun, when a voter asked the far-right congresswoman, "What happened" to Rep. Ken Buck?" Boebert replied that "he got bit by the Liz Cheney bug."

Her comment was a reference to another longtime conservative who went from fourth-in-command among House Republicans to being thrown out of her own party after she took on former President Donald Trump over January 6.

Buck, a nine-year veteran of Congress and a Freedom Caucus stalwart who criticized the effort to impeach President Joe Biden as aimless and free of evidence, is retiring from Congress — a move that he hastened Tuesday with an announcement that he will resign this month.

Boebert is fighting to replace him in Colorado's 4th Congressional District.

ALSO READ: 'What a piece of work': Marjorie Greene's 'childish' SOTU response trashed by Senate Dems

"Everywhere I go in Colorado ... I hear that people are not happy with Trump, and they're not happy with Biden. And I think we need to change our electoral laws here," he said on CNN after announcing his imminent departure.

"And I have a passion for that. We've got to find better ways to elect candidates and bring America together."

He added that he felt the GOP in Congress had a "personal" grudge against him, and then hit the body as "dysfunction" and mired in "bickering and nonsense."

Boebert, who barely won re-election to her own district in 2022, has been surrounded by scandal following a public lewdness incident during a performance of "Beetlejuice."

She responded by jumping ship to Buck's even more conservative-leaning district, and is currently running in the primary to replace him. She has found the competition for the seat to be stronger than expected.

Raw Story wins 2023 'Best in Business' journalism award, earns two honorable mentions

Raw Story investigative reporter Alexandria Jacobson and Editor-in-Chief Dave Levinthal today won a 2023 Best in Business Award for their ongoing "Lawmakers, Law Breakers" series that's revealed how dozens of members of Congress have violated a federal law designed to stop insider trading and curb conflicts of interest.

The award, sponsored by the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing, comes in the contest's personal finance category.

Judges wrote of the "Lawmakers, Law Breakers" series: "In this well-executed investigation, Alexandria Jacobson and Dave Levinthal reveal that 37 members of Congress failed to properly disclose personal stock trades in just one year. Their dogged reporting effort raises important questions about the adequacy and policing of financial conflict-of-interest laws designed to give Americans confidence in their lawmakers’ impartiality."

Raw Story reporters also earned two honorable mentions in the 2023 Best in Business Awards.

Investigative reporter Mark Alesia received an honorable mention in the explanatory category for his "Monuments to Me" investigation about how former politicians use surplus campaign cash to bolster their legacies.

"The reporting includes sleuthing into under-reported public filings and holding political leaders accountable for their spending. It is a fascinating deep dive into how these leftover zombie funds are being used," judges wrote of Alesia's work.

Jacobson received an honorable mention in the government category for her "Losing Track" series, which revealed major weaknesses in the federal government's security clearance systems.

"This is an important but much overlooked and taken for granted area that calls for more scrutiny, especially given the new relevance with the investigations into former President Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents," judges wrote of Jacobson's series.

Founded in 2004, Raw Story is America’s largest independently-owned political news site. In November, Editor & Publisher named Raw Story the "best news/political blog" of 2023.

Long known for its rapid-fire breaking news reports and commentary, Raw Story has significantly expanded its investigative and enterprise reporting team. Hires during the past year include Levinthal, Executive Editor Adam Nichols, Assistant Managing Editor Kathleen Culliton, Night Editor David McAfee and investigative reporters Jacobson and Alesia.

Boebert brags about scoring $20 million in earmarks that came from bill she opposed

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) voted against the government funding bill, but reveled in the largess it delivered to her former Colorado district.

On March 6, Boebert cast a vote opposing a bill to keep the government open, according to Business Insider.

She even retweeted a thread by Rep. Chip Roy (R-CO) knocking the bills as the "Swamp Omnibus", "minibus" and "monstrosity" — griping about how the GOP gave up on "key demands."

Weeks later, when the bill allocated $20 million to Colorado's 3rd Congressional District, Boebert suddenly started gushing over the bill's benefits.

"Can't wait for the ribbon cuttings and to see these priorities come to fruition," the congresswoman stated in a release that hyped up nearly a dozen projects across the district that were getting funded by federal dollars.

That means there will be a $5 million earmarks for a Wolf Creek water reservoir, an influx of funds to improve highway in western Colorado, among other projects.

Boebert did not respond to questions from Business Insider asking why she had an apparent change of heart about a bill she opposed.

Boebert should not have last her nerve in her own district. There is a very good chance she would have lost to Democrat Adam Frisch, but at least she might have had a fighting chance . As opposed to moving into a new district as damaged goods where she is resented for it.

'Funeral for her own career': Lauren Boebert mocked for 'sad turn out' at Colorado event

Colorado Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert became the subject of mockery this weekend as social media users made jokes about the lawmaker's apparently sparse crowd at a speaking event in her state.

Boebert, who earlier in the month was ridiculed on social media as she sought to highlight an endorsement from Donald Trump, once again took to her X account to share some pictures.

"Great to be with you today, Adams County GOP!" she wrote along with the photos.

ALSO READ: A criminologist explains why half of America does not care about Trump's crimes

In the comments of her post, people were quick to point out the empty seats visible in pictures.

Referencing Boebert's earlier scandal, user @4HumanUnity said, "It looks like only 10 people showed up. That's significantly lower than the attendance at the Beetlejuice musical."

@BellAirMB added, "Ouch, that is a really small and sad turn out."

"Adams County is Blue and you are so screwed," another user wrote Saturday.

"Geez they could have met in her living room," @mgstupelo wrote in response.

An account by the name of @Marmel posted one of the photos independently and wrote, "Where was this? It's like Boebert is at a funeral for her own 'career.'"

Allison Gill, a veteran and comedian better known as Mueller, She Wrote, chimed in on that post.

"That's really sad that Boebert can't sell out a 20 seat venue," she wrote. "Speaking of selling out venues, get your tickets to The Daily Beans LIVE before they're gone: allisongill.com."

Emily Brandwin, a former disguise officer in the CIA, said, "Be nice, it's the Boebert fan club for her tens of fans....I'm sorry I meant 10 fans."

Boebert brags bill she rejected will help 'CO district she’s now abandoning': report

    Maya Boddie, Alternet

President Joe Biden's $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill did not have the support of 30 GOP senators and 200 House Republicans in 2021, but in November, several of those members took "credit for the historic investment they actively tried to stop," according to The New Republic.

Per the report, Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and John Cornyn (R-TX), and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) all voted against the legislation, but took credit via social media once the bill had proven to successfully distribute "upward of $42 billion across America to expand internet access and help bring rural and isolated communities into the increasingly digital world."

Earlier this month, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) continued the pattern when she "'celebrated the impending arrival of' funding from a bill she voted against,'" according to Business Insider on March 18.

ALSO READ: Feds quash presidential campaign of 'Literally Anybody Else'

The Colorado lawmaker took credit for $20 million funding her former Colorado district would receive after voting against the legislation, calling it a "swamp omnibus" and "monstrosity," earlier this month.

Business Insider reported the bill she is now celebrating includes "more than $20 million for the Colorado district she's now abandoning."

Although Boebert currently represents Colorado's 3rd Congressional District, the MAGA congresswoman is vying for re-election in Colorado's 4th Congressional District, is seeking a third term via Colorado's 4th Congressional District, from which Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) officially resigned.

In a press release distributed by her office last week, The Independent reported Monday that Boebert said, "These include important federal resources for new water storage, improving water quality, funding water treatment plants, building new water supply lines, reducing congestion on I-70, and building roads and bridges. I'm grateful to all the local stakeholders who brought these important projects to my attention and that worked with my team and I throughout this process to ensure that 10 out of 10 of our requests were successfully funded in public law. Can't wait for the ribbon cuttings and to see these priorities come to fruition."

When The Independent interviewed Boebert about publicly taking credit for the bill, the Republican lawmaker "bragged about bringing the money back to" her state, saying, "Sure did, I fought to get it in there, did I not. If I wasn’t working on it, then it wouldn’t have been in there."

The news outlet notes when Boebert was asked why she originally smacked down the legislation, she replied, "I didn't agree to the swampy way it came to the floor but I fought to get the stuff in the bills and it's there. And Colorado is going to benefit from it.”
