Those who cherry pick passages in the bible to prove a particular point almost always prove only that they can't formulate a cogent argument supporting their point and resort to claiming the authority of the bible as their own.

'This is pointless': House Republicans poised to revolt against Speaker Mike Johnson

    Tom Boggioni
    February 29, 2024 6:52AM ET

WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 25: U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) applauds alongside fellow lawmakers as the House of Representatives holds an election for a new Speaker of the House at the U.S. Capitol on October 25, 2023 in Washington, DC. After a contentious nominating period that has seen four candidates over a three-week period, the House GOP conference selected Johnson as their most recent nominee to succeed former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who was ousted on October 4 in a move led by a small group of conservative members of his own party. (Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images)

An agreement by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to work with Democrats on a stopgap spending plan to avoid a government shutdown has members of his caucus furious with multiple members complaining, "We're just kicking the can down the road," and that "it is just more of the same."

According to a report from the Daily Beast, Johnson plans to move key deadline dates out to March 8 and March 22, but there are worries among Republicans those dates will crumble too.

Of major concern by GOP lawmakers is that Johnson appears to have no long-term plan and continues to keep them in the dark, with one lawmaker stating they heard about his latest maneuver on social media.

ALSO READ: ‘We're wounded:’ Speaker Mike Johnson struggles to lead GOP after ‘unnecessary purging’

The way he’s handled this whole thing is abysmal. I mean, there’s been zero communication with the conference. He can do a much better job,” they declared. “I still really don’t know everything that’s involved in it. I haven’t heard from his mouth yet. That’s the most concerning.”

During a conference call with the speaker, who was characterized as "wishy-washy" as he explained his efforts, another texted, "This is pointless.”

According to the Beast's report, "The situation has gotten so toxic that conservatives are now complimenting their former leader, the exiled McCarthy," with outspoken Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) calling Johnson's manuvering "capitulation."

Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) added, "This guy, he got the job in an awkward spot,. He’s behind the eight ball already. He just needs to figure out how to get out from behind and move on.”

Johnson’s historically narrow House majority shrinks further after Democrat Tom Suozzi sworn in

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson is overseeing one of the smallest House majorities in history – and Democrat leaving the page." data-wf-tooltip-position="bottom" data-wf-reset-every="90">Tom Suozzi’s win in a New York special election shrinks it further.

Suozzi defeated Republican Mazi Pilip in a race earlier this month for the seat previously held by former GOP Rep. George Santos who was expelled from Congress last year.

With Suozzi’s swearing in Wednesday, Republicans now control 219 seats and Democrats control 213. At that margin, House Republicans will only be able to lose only two votes to pass legislation on party-line votes if all members are present and voting.

There are now three vacancies in the House. Former New York Democratic Rep. Brian Higgins resigned from Congress earlier this month, former Ohio GOP Rep. Bill Johnson resigned last month and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy resigned at the end of last year.

In addition to the tight margin, there is always the possibility that absences could further impact the vote math.

The razor-thin majority presents an enormous challenge for Speaker Johnson, leaving him with almost no room for error as he navigates demands from competing wings of his party and faces down an increasingly combative right flank.

Hardline conservatives have already shown they can hold major sway in the chamber with such a narrow majority – most notably when a group of them moved to oust McCarthy from the speakership in a historic vote last year.

The exact size of the far right of the House Republican Conference can vary from issue to issue. A contingent of roughly a dozen hardliners staged a rebellion on the House floor last month, taking down a procedural vote to show opposition to a spending deal Johnson had reached with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The ever-shrinking margin has forced Johnson to put some bills directly onto the floor under a procedural move known as suspension of the rules as his right flank has increasingly taken to tanking rule votes on the floor in a show of protest.

But that strategy compels the need for a two-thirds majority to pass bills, requiring significant Democratic support, and further alienating Johnson and the right wing of his conference.

In addition to facing pressure from conservatives, Johnson must also balance the interests of more moderate members from battleground districts who are on the front lines of the majority and who will be under intense scrutiny this election season.

There were 18 Republicans in House districts that President Joe Biden won in 2020 – a number that is now down to 17 after the expulsion of Santos. The fate of these politically vulnerable members will be key to whether the GOP can hold on to its majority.

So msman, why did Ron Johnson try to help Trump overturn the 2020 election?
On what evidence did Johnson appeal to the supreme court to intervene and stop Biden from becoming the rightful president?

GOP nervous as frustrated colleague takes aim at Mike Johnson: report

North Carolina GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry is taking aim at House Speaker Mike Johnson — and it has his fellow conservatives concerned.

McHenry, who plans to retire at the end of the session, has been critical of Johnson over what he sees as his repeated mishandling of issues such as the border and Ukraine aid.

A banking lobbyist speaking to Politico said that McHenry, “Speaks for what I would call the leadership class of the conference.”

“Patrick uses the ‘Shawshank Redemption’ metaphor,” the lobbyist said. “Andy Dufresne has to crawl three miles through a pipe full of human s--t to go and reach freedom. And Patrick’s like, ‘Well, you can crawl slowly, or you can crawl quickly.’ … The analogy is supposed to be like, just make a decision.”

Also read: E. Jean Carroll drops 'one week to pay' threat on Trump as he scrambles for cash

According to Politico, McHenry’s critique of Johnson, "Is an illustration of the extent to which the House GOP has been turned upside down during his tenure."

"The 48-year-old lawmaker was once a self-described 'bomb-thrower' — also referred to by others as the 'the GOP’s attack dog-in-training' — but then took on the mantle as an aspiring deal-maker and McCarthy fixer before finding himself on the outside again in the Johnson era," Politico's report stated.

Louisiana GOP Rep. Garret Graves said that the "extreme candor" from McHenry is based on "his 20 years of work on the Hill."

“Patrick’s candor is not just motivated by the fact that he’s leaving. But I think it’s motivated by an extraordinary amount of frustration that he feels," Graves said.

McHenry told Politico that he's only sharing what other Republicans are saying.

“I’ve been around leadership decisions for quite a while,” he said. “I’ve never been bashful about sharing my views, either in the room or outside the room. And what I’m saying is obvious to a majority of the House Republican Conference.”

House tees up vote to keep money flowing to several key federal agencies

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House is expected to vote to keep money flowing to scores of federal agencies before a midnight Friday shutdown deadline even as many members of the Republican conference are expected to vote against it.

The first package of six bills expected to be voted on Wednesday has a price tag of about $460 billion. Lawmakers are still negotiating a second package of six bills, including defense, in an effort to have all agencies fully funded before a March 22 deadline. In the end, total discretionary spending set by Congress is expected to come in at about $1.66 trillion.

A significant number of House Republicans oppose the measure, forcing House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to use an expedited process to bring the bill up for a vote. That process requires two-thirds of the House to vote for the measure for it to pass.

The nondefense spending in this year's bills is relatively flat compared to the previous year. Supporters say that keeping that spending below the rate of inflation is tantamount to a cut, forcing agencies to be more frugal and focus manpower on top priorities. Johnson touted a 10% cut to the Environmental Protection Agency, a 7% cut to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and a 6% cut to the FBI.

But many Republican lawmakers were seeking much steeper cuts and more policy wins. The House Freedom Caucus, which contains dozens of the GOP's most conservative members, urged Republicans to vote against the first spending package to be voted on Wednesday and oppose the second one still being negotiated.

“Despite giving Democrats higher spending levels, the omnibus text released so far punts on nearly every single Republican policy priority,” the group said.

Johnson countered that House Republicans have just a two-vote majority in the House while Democrats control the Senate and White House.

“We have to be realistic about what we're able to achieve,” Johnson said.

Democrats staved off most of the policy riders that House Republicans sought to include in the package. For example, they beat back an effort to block new rules that expand access to the abortion pill mifepristone.

Democrats also said the bill would fully fund a nutrition program for low-income women, infants and children, providing about $7 billion for what is known as the WIC program. That's a $1 billion increase from the previous year.

As part of those negotiations, House Republicans pushed to give a few states the ability to disallow the purchase of nonnutritious food, such as sugary drinks and snacks, in the food stamp program known as SNAP. The GOP's effort was unsuccessful for now, but supporters say they'll try again in next year's spending bills.

“The bill certainly doesn't have everything that we may have wanted, but I am very proud to say we successfully defeated the vast majority of the extreme cuts and hundreds of harmful policy riders proposed by the House Republicans,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the top-ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee.

House Republicans were able to achieve some policy wins, however. One provision, for example, will prevent the sale of oil in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to China. Another policy mandate prohibits the Justice Department from investigating parents who exercise free speech at local school board meetings.

Another provision strengthens gun rights for certain veterans. Under current law, the VA must send a beneficiary’s name to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System whenever a fiduciary is appointed to help manage someone’s benefits. This year’s spending package prohibits the VA from transmitting that information unless a relevant judicial authority rules that the beneficiary is a danger to himself or herself, or others.

A gun violence prevention group formed by former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was severely wounded in a mass shooting, said the change would make it easier for those at an elevated risk of suicide to access a gun.

“Republicans duck the issue of gun violence and instead blame mental illness, then fight to allow individuals with diminished mental capacity unfettered access to guns,” said Vanessa N. Gonzalez, a vice president at Giffords.

In a closed-door meeting with the House GOP, Johnson, looking to show that Republicans did get some policy wins in the negotiations, read from a news report about how Democrats were having “heartburn” about the gun provision, according to a Republican familiar with the discussion who was not authorized to discuss it publicly.

The bills to fund federal agencies are more than five months past due with the fiscal year beginning on Oct. 1. House Republicans are describing an improved process nevertheless, saying they've broken the cycle of passing all the spending bills in one massive package that lawmakers have little time to study before being asked to vote on it or risk a government shutdown.

“We broke the omnibus fever,” Johnson said.

But critics of the bill, such as Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., were dismissive about how much the process really changed, calling the spending packages “an omnibus cut in two parts.”

The package voted on this week covers the departments of Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Interior and Transportation, among others.

Once the package clears the House, it will then go to the Senate with supporters looking to have a vote before Friday's midnight deadline.

Speaker Johnson Calls For Defunding Federal Law Enforcement Agencies That Have ‘Turned… Against the American People’
    Jamie FreveleMar 6th, 2024, 12:40 pm

Republicans often campaign on their commitment to supporting law enforcement, but during a press conference on Wednesday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) declared that he will push for cuts to several federal law enforcement agencies.

Johnson spoke on several points including the border, crime, and the State of the Union, and he bemoaned the policies of President Joe Biden. Not unpredictable since Johnson is a Republican and Biden is a Democrat. However, in the same speech he lamented crime rates — even though crime rates are down — seconds before announcing that he’d push for cuts to agencies that exist to fight crime and enforce laws, claiming that they have “overreach[ed]” and even “turned, in some ways, against the American people”:

We have advanced and we also advanced, as you’ve seen the summary, cuts to some of the agencies that we believe are really overreaching and have been turned, in some ways, against the American people. We’re going to cut 3 percent from [the Department of Justice], 7 percent from the [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms], 6 percent from the FBI, and 10 percent from the EPA. And that’s just a start.

Then he made it clear what his real priorities were as Speaker:

We have a lot more priorities and things that we need to advance. But the reality is, as we all recognize, is that we have to grow the House majority, take back the Senate for the Republican Party, and win the White House.

'They think you're a joke': Mike Johnson slammed for boasting of meeting with NATO leader

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) took to X on Tuesday to boast of his meeting with the leader of Poland, a key U.S. NATO ally, President Andrzej Duda, and sparked almost immediate backlash.

"I was proud to host President Duda and the delegation from Poland in the Capitol to express Congress’ continued appreciation for the strong relationship between our two countries," wrote Johnson. "As host to 10,000 American troops and one of America’s key NATO allies, Poland is a strategic partner in promoting a free and prosperous future and in advocating for greater defense spending by our European partners. In an increasingly dangerous world with growing threats, America must remain united with our friends against those who threaten our security."

These words of support for Poland rang hollow to Alyssa Farah Griffin, a onetime communications official for former President Donald Trump, who pointed out the double-talk hidden in his comments.

"Weird optics," she wrote. "Mike Johnson is currently single-handedly blocking aid to Ukraine."

Griffin noted she has also met with Duda and guessed at the message he had for Johnson.

"He’s a friend to the US - he’s also very direct," Griffin wrote. "I’m confident he implored Johnson to put Ukraine aid on the floor."

Johnson is one of the most hostile congressional leaders toward Ukraine funding, which has been vital to helping the country defend itself against the invasion of Russia.

He has yet to call up a vote on a bipartisan Senate package that restores Ukraine funding, as well as providing aid to Israel and Taiwan.

He previously claimed he was holding off on such a vote to prioritize budget negotiations to avoid a partial government shutdown — but those negotiations have concluded, with no sign of a vote on the aid package.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has expressed his impatience with Johnson, saying, "We don't have time for all of this. We've got a bill that got 70 votes in the Senate."

Nor did Johnson's followers express much patience with Johnson.

"Bring the Senate border bill to a vote, Moscow Moses!" demanded Art Candee.

"Poland is supporting Ukraine. You're not," wrote X user Sandy. "They think you're a joke."

And now even the Supreme Court is trying to cover up for Trump and make sure there's no way he can be held accountable until after the election. Hoping he wins of course so as president he can make all his indictments just go away.

‘I’ve been so busy’: Speaker Johnson says no time to assess Biden impeachment evidence

Exactly three months ago, Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson moved his predecessor's impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden into a full-blown, authorized impeachment investigation. He's not quite sure yet if there's enough evidence to actually impeach the President.

Democrats have repeatedly made the case President Joe Biden has committed no impeachable offenses, which was reinforced when Republicans' latest star witness was indicted for lying to the FBI about the very evidence he provided, evidence Republicans based their impeachment investigation 0n.

At least two Republican House committees have been planning the investigation into President Biden, his son Hunter, and other family members since November of 2022. When Republicans officially took control of the House in January of 2023, they began their work. Then-Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy announced an impeachment inquiry, without a House vote, later that year, on September 12. On December 13, 2023, under Speaker Johnson, the House officially voted to formally authorize the current three-committee impeachment inquiry, "despite lack of evidence," as Reuters reported.

So after 15 months of investigations, is there enough evidence to impeach President Biden?

That is the question PBS NewsHour's Lisa Desjardins asked Speaker Johnson directly, on Wednesday.

Specifically, Desjardins reports, she asked Johnson if he "thinks there is enough evidence to impeach" President Biden.

Johnson says he hasn't had the time to figure it out.

READ MORE: ‘I’d Rather Sit Down With Hannibal Lecter’: Johnson’s Grip on Speakership Slips Further

“'I have not been able to take the time to do a deep dive' into the evidence," Johnson replied.

Punchbowl News' Max Cohen adds: "Amid confusion over the path forward for the Biden impeachment inquiry, Johnson won’t commit to me whether the House will vote on impeachment this Congress."

The Speaker "says [committees] still waiting on some documents," Cohen reports, noting Johnson said: “You've seen a very, very slow, deliberative investigative process.”

"Johnson," Cohen continues, "in a transparent impeachment admission, says 'because I've been so busy with all my other responsibilities, I haven’t been able to take the time to do the deep dive in the evidence.'"

Punchbowl News called it, "a pretty startling revelation from the top House Republican,” according to a report from Political Wire.

    Democrats pounced on Johnson's remarks.

"Republicans' sham impeachment has uncovered an extensive body of exculpatory evidence that definitively disproves their lies about the President," wrote Joseph Costello, press secretary for the House Democrats on Chairman Jim Comer's Oversight Committee. "So it is indeed 'alarming' that House Republicans would spend millions and millions of taxpayer dollars to promote debunked lies."

Ian Mariani, communications director to U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-CA), said, "Mike Johnson breaking up with his party’s own sham impeachment with the classic 'I’m just…like…really busy right now.'"
