I am confused as to why he deserves to die?

The original poster provided a scenario, of a mistreated "Servent", I can only think that if i was in the same situation, I would have a hard time finding a reason why the man deserves to live.

I see now that saying he deserves to die, implies that he should be killed. Saying that he doesn't deserve to live, just means he's not worth my time. I hope that clarifies a little.

While I agree that the female is a limited resource, it would be a mistake to assume that she is not the one resource both males would crave, at least to keep an air of accepted behaviour about them, and at least for a time, no matter how limited. It could of course come to pass that the two males become more attracted to eachother over time than to the female. But until that time, she wields a certain amount of power on the island, with either one male or even two.

I feel you are basing all your assumptions on the situation on past relationships of the people involved. Once humans are caught up in a disaster, their natural survival instincts take precedence over their learned modern day behaviour. We regress, if you will, back to a time when we needed numbers to survive. There would be less chance of getting off the island and back to civilisation with two people.

I would still save him.

My statement wasn't meant in the least bit as pejorative, just that my version of honesty is often a little more brutal, but I have read enough of your post to know it was sincere.

And I realize the line was more of a joke, but I do think it was largely being overlooked that there were other basic human needs at stake with her.

I guess if every day was a struggle to just survive, it would cause other concerns to fall to the background. And I suppose if I knew I needed him for survival that might change things, but as a whole I think he would be mostly unwanted.

 

So I guess the moral of the story is,

Sail your own damned boat. Maybe?

 

That or bring a nice female to male ratio.

That is the type of ratio that might temp a resourceful guy to burn the boat himself. So yes, that sounds like a very good ratio.
