This is difficult for me. I ran a theater for 11 years and I am a complete movie buff. As the thread grows I will probably have a few choices. Right now I am thinking "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. An extremely surreal love story.

I know dark, scary guy picks a love story. Sue me.

Thanks Exar, and I liked your choice in ESOTSM too... I enjoy things that are a little different from the norm, and that reminded me of other great surreal movies, like Brazil and The Fisher King... or even LA Story! (the latter two, love stories as well...)

I think for me, there's no one stand out movie that ticks all the boxes... but different films in different genres that I'd class as truly great. Such as "Bladerunner" for Sci-fi, or "Saw" for Horror. Unusual, intelligent and adding something new to the genre.

For my money - The Shawshank Redemption - only watched this after being recommended to me by reading Trumpet's and Kimiko's posts last year !

Once Upon A Time In America - The attention to detail was amazing, from how they went from kids to young men to old men they put in all the subtle details from begining to end. Especially for a gangters movie... not even the Godfather did that.

Ahhh, you're talking the "Jacob's Ladder" kind of thing. Love them... anything that makes you think, plays with your expectations... carefully sets you up and then pulls the rug from under you at the last minute... Brazil did that brilliantly. It was only when you saw the last thirty seconds of that movie that you realized just how seriously you'd been set up for a jaw-dropping ending.

The movie The Number 23 was like that as well.

Worth checking out Fluff. It's always good to see Jim go "against the grain". He is an excellent actor. The movie itself is intriguing.

*nods* Well I certainly enjoyed him in "The Truman Show", which I thought was an excellent story, and well acted. I've always been in two minds about "The Cable Guy", haven't watched that as yet, having endured "Ace Ventura 2" and wondering if it's that level of overacted again... but I think I might give "The number 23" a try... always one to broaden my film horizons!

By the way, I don't suppose you (or anyone else) has seen "The many deaths of Ian Stone" by any chance? Seems a truly strange movie... I wondered if it lived up to it's initial promise..?
