Cable Guy was actually the first one where he flashed his dark side a bit while being a goofball. It was more a "dark" comedy and was ill received by fans of his first few films. It wasn't great, but you can see him wanting to start really acting in it.

Butterfly was really good, yet another comedian taking the plunge.

 

Zulu - Cy Endfield's 1964 flick stands as such a racist film of British Imperalism that it will never be made again... untill 300 came along.

Aside from the superb acting, the very irony of the British fighting a defensive battle on foregin lands makes this film so awesome. And guess what, every enemy is black, every ally is white. But everything was real, the Zulu were real (Actually native African tribes), the British were real (Certainly more real than James Bond), and the scenery was real, the fires and gun smoke were also real.

Too bad we dont like real stuff in movies anymore... :sad:

 

Glad you liked it, BB...and I agree with Kool Madness that "One Upon a Time in America" was a great epic, especially if you happened to see the Director's Cut.

But I'd have to go with one of the B&W classics, like "Casablanca"...maybe "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Twelve Angry Men", or "Inherit the Wind". No special effects, just actors acting.

 

There was the classic line in Zulu from the "preacher?" "Don't you understand, you're ALL GOING TO DIE !" A really well delivered line - but reading this - you probably needed to see the film !

 

Now when you talk about old B&W classics not only are those 4 excellent choices but you would have to add "A Gentlemen's Agreement" a real sign of the times film.

 

Damn - forgot Top Gun - even though it was stuffed full of Yanks - it was a really good film

 

Hey I just look it up and it's (Zulu) coming on TV tonight at 8pm on TCM (Turner Classic Movies).

 

Watch out for Michael Caine saying the immortal words of "you're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off"

 

So it's best ever made? Not favorite?
