This of course doesn't justify racism, but I just think it is a bad argument that has been floating around for a long time.

 

she's right though. the genetics that make up different "races" came about because of people emigrating to different areas, and living there for centuries.

If you go by "1.the science that deals with the origins, physical and cultural development, biological characteristics, and social customs and beliefs of humankind. " different races are not the same from that point of view. However if you use "2.the study of human beings' similarity to and divergence from other animals. " then the statement does hold true.

And where does the genetic Eve come into all this? They supposedly traced all our genes back to one woman in Africa, and if I read the report correctly we have more genes in common with her than people in her own village do.

 

I'm white and have friends and family members of many different races. But, you won't see me posting such a raving message like that!

 

Genetic material is responsible for making the physical characteristics that we call different races. So yes you can say there is there are genetic differences between races. People will often counter that you can find more differences within a race than between them. This is true, we should expect this because we are the same species. But considering that the variable genetic information for any individual person can be stored for about the same memory as an MP3, it doesn't take a lot of "code" to make each individual difference.

I would have to see the article, but I would speculate that Eve is likely just the oldest XXXX sapien found. The steps to humanity is such a gradual process it wouldn't be like all of a sudden a human was born from a non-human and through some miracle of parthenogenesis started breeding humans. Rather at some point our set of ancestors were divided from, and gradually evolved differently than those just like them until they could no longer have viable offspring with their cousins. While it may be possible to determine a window of time when the split occurred, there wouldn't be a clean cut of "This is the generation" in which speciation occurred.

 

Thanks for the explanation which does help with my confusion. I can see the argument that we are all bothers and sisters can only be used so far and does not eliminate the classification of races.

And if I understand the Eve thing, what happened is they traced myocardial DNA and it all came back to one blood line. But I'd have to research this again to be sure and even then there's not guarantee I would understand it.

 

That makes sense that she is the oldest we have record of and that we that we could even all be directly linked to her. But as I said earlier, saying she is the absolute first human woman seems a bit impossible.
