Venezuela first purchased Fighter jets now Russia says it is dispatching a nuclear cruiser and other warships and planes to the Caribbean for joint exercises with Venezuela, the first such maneuvers in the US vicinity since the Cold War.

 

I see this as a direct statement that Russia is willing to push back against what they see as US interference and aggression in their region and you're absolutely right we are back to cold war status which is insane if you ask me.

Here's something worth pointing out. This, just like the Cuban Missile crisis, are sheer, for show, power politics. The whole idea of the Cuban Missile crisis was that we would not tolerate nuclear weapons that close to the US. In truth then and now we have Russian Nuclear Subs cruising as close as 10 miles off our coast line.

My take on things is that Russia senses a weakness and sees the US...and maybe the rest of the west.... as being very vulnerable at the moment...given the financial meltdown situation.

It is after all Russia...along with China..... who are rushing to aid Iceland........

However...I also agree with gwalton.

It's just all playground posturing.

 

I think it is also turn about is fair play.

Most of us don't like to admit it but the US did help instigate the conflict in Georgia and like just about everything else these days the real cause was natural gas and oil. The break away regions that want to side with Russia are rich in these resources and the US especially was doing everything they could to make sure they stayed under Georgia's control. That included equiping and training the Georgian army as well has having thousands of US backed troops like Blackwater on the ground.

The Russians are obviously saying that if you want to fuck around in our back yard we can do the same thing in yours.

But like I said in an earlier post on this thread Russia has nuclear submarines off our coast and we have some off of theirs and its been that way since the early 1960's.

 

It may seem like cold war for now, but two powers need to be evenly matched for a cold war to be viable. America will continue to decline while Russia will ascend. In a few decades, Russia will be the stronger overall. Hell, the economy of the western world could collapse if it keeps going at this rate in a few more years. That's just what I fugure anyway.

 

I think the US/West and Russia are both in trouble. The one thing Russia has made sure of is despite their economic troubles (same now with the US) they have remained evenly matched at least as far as nuclear weapons.

But the new players in the game are China and India. They are ascending at an incredibly rapid pace and have not gained such stature as to shoot themselves in the foot as we have done. They are hungry and climbing while we have over stuffed ourselves to the point of being bloated and lazy.

That's where I think the real danger for us is at. Not in missiels and bullets but in dollars and cents.

Not to jeopardize our cordial relations, but Ronald Reagan was one dumb fucking B Grade actor and a D grade president that was actually nothing more than a mouth piece for the far right delivering lines from a script.

He's also the one who started this bullshit of the US acting like the world police force while he broke laws that could have and should have had him impeached.

And while there are those who would like to claim he brought down the Soviet Union those claims are false. The Soviet Union collapsed under the weight of their own failed system and that would have happened when it did no matter who was president. The only real difference was when it did it happened to have a very intelligent and far sighted leader as their president which was Mickal Gorbachev.

Reagan eviscerated this country and we have never fully recovered. And now Bush has nearly finished the job that Reagan's handlers started..
