How the hell can you get so uptight about smoking? It's just simple life style choice, I dont mind people who dont smoke and wish Id stop but when I get people in my face giving me shit about it I just want to tell them to fuck off. Like everything else in this world if you don't like then don't do it. And btw not hiring people who smoke is discrimination, you can get sued for that. As for someone sitting next to you smelling, seriously, get over it.

 

To chime in with both of you. I agree, it is the nonconsiserate folks that make smokers look bad. It is a shame all smokers are put in one group and steriotyped

 

I appreciate the "considerate" smoker and I have many friends that are. The clients I talk to on the phone don't need to hear him hacking up a lung in the background while trying to have a conversation.

 

I smoked for 25 years then I quit and then I had a heart transplant and now I can finally breathe again. That is until some asshole lights a cigarette next to me and then I have to leave the room.

 

I hear ya man. My parents both smoke and are not at all respectful of other people's right to clean air or to smell good, and have some just plain fucking disgusting habits. Almost everybody at my college smokes, and that's not bad cus it's understandable and something a lot of kids my age just do for some reason, but also at every single fucking trolley stop and bus stop you have smelly ass smokers who will come sit near you and light one up or sit next to you when they've been smoking, or are still smoking.

If people are respectful of my right to clean air and to not smell like them then they can smoke all they want, but otherwise, have some fucking consideration for other people.

When I smoke (which is very rarely, maybe one cigarette a week), I make sure to use mouthwash after, use an air freshener in the room, and what not. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke, always have but due to trying to be cool as a kid, I am stuck with a bad habit that sometimes I can not control. When I get stressed out so bad that I am forced to do something, the option is light up a cig... or eat... my two coping mechanisms. Well being that I must lose weight, I can't eat so it has to be the cigarette.

 

If a Smoker had any idea how BAD they STINK all the time,,, they wouldn't do it any more....

And as for KID'S screaming in a public place NOT!!!!!!!! I am a parent of 2 and have 2 grand kids and not one of them raised hell in a public place by screaming.... That's how we raised them!!!!! Some parents can't or don't control their kids...

As are my kids Doc. I was raised in a time where disciplining a kid didn't mean a phonecall to the police or child services like these days.

Unfortunately, it's not considered discrimination in many places...I looked it up..Only skimmed the article so I couldn't tell you the wheres, but apparently private companies in some places are considered to be within their rights to choose not to hire smokers..

One of the reasons given is in instances where hazardous chemicals are involved..Smokers are supposed to be much more vulnerable to the effects of toxins than non-smokers..

There is no federal law which bans "tobacco discrimination" but some states do protect smokers..Connecticut has a law which explicitly grants smokers' rights..

Some states like California and New York have laws against making employment decisions based on people's legal, off-duty activities..

That's in the U.S. though..According to the European Commission, companies in the European Union may legally refuse to hire smokers because EU anti-discrimination laws do not protect them..

Oh well, it's not like I was gonna move to Belgium or someplace anyway!

 

from what i have heard if the company provides insurance they can refuse to hire smokers (and probably alcoholics though that is harder to detect) because of the fact that smoking does lead to more medical problems and smokers are then taking advantage of the insurance offered. Also because it is a choice it is not discrimination, unlike not hiring someone because they are black, asian, hispanic or any other nationality which is discrimination because you have no way to change what you are.
