Obama did not win just because he has African blood ties or because of the color of his skin, though it certainly was a factor. The largest reason he won was because he was not a republican. This was a democratic year, and I'm surprised the race was even as close as it was.

Did the black community turn out to vote for someone they visually and culturally identified with? Yeah, absolutely. Beyond this Obama captured a huge percentage of the white vote. Plain and simple he ran a smart campaign and was from the party of choice, and when talking about 'change' it sure doesnt hurt if you look different from every other candidate ever elected to the office.

I don't think the 'black community' if we are going to lump them up like that, is any less racist than whites or any other group. They identify with what is familiar. In fact, many have said that the community simultaneously demands equality as a minority group while vehemently opposing other minority groups like homosexuals at the same time.

 

I agree with many things in your post, and disagree with many others, but I take particular issue with this. Very few people, even in blind/anonymous studies outright admit to racism or racial motivation in American society today. It is not politically correct or socially acceptable as can be demonstrated by any number of events, recently notable are those the press struck on like Michael Richards or Don Imus, and those are just examples of attempted comedy from bit players in the social landscape. It is generally couched in much more general language.

IMHO many whites voted against Obama based solely on race (though FAR less than would have done so in previous decades/centuries), and many blacks voted for him based solely on race, and I dont think any study or poll has a chance of even remotely accurately obtaining the actual percentages that did so.

 

A surprising number of people seemed willing to come right out and say it. Not that that's a scientific sampling, but I was surprised by their forthrightness in admitting to bigotry. What really seemed significant to me was how well Hillary Clinton did at mobilizing the white Appalachian vote in the primaries. These were DEMOCRATIC voters...and people in those same areas voted more Republican this year than they did four years ago.

No, I think racism is alive and well in this country. My take, though, is that a lot of those same people took a hard look at the economy in October and decided that they had better take a chance on the black man. The economic issues overwhelmed everything. If not for that (and his disastrous VP pick), McCain might well have one, in spite of Bush's unpopularity.

 

As I said, it was just a poll on here. I don't think a PORN FORUM is an accurate sampling of america (especially considering that most right-wing conservatives wouldn't be caught dead on a porn forum-Didiot and Tat aside). But I was surprised that people did admit they'd never vote for a black man. I wasn't surprised there were those who felt that way. But I was surprised they actually made it known. Add to that the MANY people I've encountered in the past year who said they would "NEVER, EVER vote for a N.....". Put simply, no one knows what you do in the ballot box or WHY you did it. So I fully believe that there are many who voted against him because of his skin color. Just as I believe several voted FOR him because of it.

My point was just that attributing Obama's win to the black population is ridiculous. They just don't have the numbers. And black youths (for the most part) don't have the commitment.

 

It depends on how you look at it. Obama actually LOST among white voters, though not by an overwhelming margin. So one could argue that it was minority voters (not just African-American) that provided him with his margin of victory.

Well, I just don’t understand all this hype about obama being the "first black president" is his mother not white? Were his grandmother and grandfather not white? He is just as much white as black, he is not the first black president, he is the first biracial president! When he was running, they tried to say he was not black, now they say he is black; he is what they want him to be when they want, and when it works for them! I don’t like him, I watch the news daily just hoping to hear that someone has assassinated him; wouldn’t that be wonderful, another day off work like with martin luther whatever! Even more ridiculous, there is now a proposed holiday to honor obama as the first black president! Obama claims he will not allow this holiday, yeah right! He campaigned from a podium with a modified presidential shield. He has "created" a new office from thin air... The Office of the President-Elect. The man cannot wait to get his hands of authentic presidential trappings, salivating for the pomp and circumstance of office. A Nat'l Holiday with his name on it will get his stamp of approval without hesitation!

I suppose I find it surprising how many make it known too. I just meant that many that don't still voted with prejudice one way or the other. I think we agree and we can certainly agree that mobilizing the black community was not the reason Obama won as well.

 

Had McCain chosen Romney, someone who ran largely on his strong knowledge of economics, I think the race would have been much closer, but I still think he would have lost.
