You think that because the checks go out, the system is great. Sorry, someone pays the bill, either you or I, or our kids, or their kids. The system is projected to fail in either 2042 or 2080, depending on which GNP growth projection you chose. It is not self perpetuating, the funds being added today will not be there for those who are contributing to it, this is not a portrait of success.

The public education system is a joke, the are many studies that point to just that. The only way that many systems can graduate the students is to lower the standards, to say the system is a success is quite idiotic. You yourself say it's illmanaged.

The military and space programs are also going bust, we have few resources dedicated to development, they are being spent on deployment and programs soon to be scrapped, i.e., the shuttle. Resource are not being committed to keep pace with other programs in the world.

BTW, get off the horse that says I think that ALL goverment programs are bad and ALL private programs good. I've never said that and never eluded to it. What I do say is the good government programs are saddled with bureaucratic boondoggle, and extreme hamstrung because of it. Many programs would be much better if they were managed correctly.

And what I have consistently said is mismanaged is the way it is politicized by corrupt politicians like George Bush who just like you use it for a scapegoat while actually hurting the system with stupid ideas. And once again whether as educational system is above or below average depends on the state it is in and the emphasis they place on education. In other words especially the southern states like the one you're in pull down the statistics of all the other school systems.

Finally you bet the military, the space program, and all of us are having financial difficulty. But that is the mismangement of Bush and the conservatives/Republicans that have been primarily in control for the past eight years. Its the money from the spend and borrow conservatives and the greed based economy that has been mismanaged not the programs.

At least the government is, to one degree or another, accountable for what it does. I'm with Stumbler -- I'm sick and tired of hearing this mantra about how the government can't do anything right. Public education in California, for example, was the envy of the country and the world until Republicans started their anti-tax crusade and instituted Proposition 13 in the mid 1970s. Education has been starved for funding ever since, and under constant attack from the right wing the entire time. It's very difficult to do a good job of educating children when the best students are cherry-picked to attend charter schools, when you can't pay teachers enough to attract qualified ones, when your teachers' and students' lives revolve around scores on a plethora of standardized tests...

 

You need to give the public school system and the schools themselves back to the parents of the children that attend those schools. Less Government is always better.

 

Really? Okay, close all the schools and leave it to the parents to fend for themselves. That will, I'm sure, fix the problem.

While we're at it, I think we should leave it to the parents to police the neighborhood, build the roads, fight fires....

 

Parents as a group can hire administrators and teachers just as good as a any government employee. Maybe, great idea? we would save lots.

 

That's exactly what government is, whether it's local government, state government, or the federal government. It is people acting collectively to tax themselves and establish programs that benefit them. That's why local governments have police and fire departments. That's why there are local school boards, and why you pay property taxes to support them. The government is not "them"...it's "you".
