I liked Obama's speech, that which I heard. I intuited hope.There were a lot of Canadians wanting to catch a mere glimpse of him in his first visit to Canada(in Ottawa..that's our capital, for those that don't know).
I want to hear more of what he has to say on improving our trade relations, which could be better. Maybe with a Dem in office, this could happen.
Time will tell.

First, the insurance folderol: This "market" is not a free enterprise system where various insurance plans can be compared and shopped competitively. That is precisely what we have right NOW. No, instead, it's where the FEDS CONTROL THE INSURANCE PLAN and then offer a taxpayer subsidized one that makes the private insurers go bankrupt or leave the system. This will not "save" a thing, it will merely create larger national debts and more unemployment, and reduced investments, as insurers leave the market. Of course, Obama will not be honest about what it is about, as you'd reject it immediately. Instead, it's carefully misrepresented and you're fooled until it's too late to back out. Oh, you didn't know about the federal "plan" to undercut insurance in the private sector by offloading all the expenses onto the taxpayers? Maybe that's because you're not willing to listen to the critics and Obama will never, EVER tell you anything even faintly resembling THE TRUTH.

"banks and student lending". Oh, yeah. There's a gold mine for banks. NOT. Over the last five to ten years, many banks have left the student loan business because it is NOT PROFITABLE. However, it does create assets on the bank's books, as in gauranteed paper. For those that have an efficient system of processing and tracking, student loans have become a smallish revenue stream and a stabilizing pile of solid paper on the books.

Obama's promising to squeeze out even more banks out of the system, and provoke a crisis, where there's so few banks left offering them, that the feds will have to create a new department to loan money directly, this will create yet another massive new round of federal debt, as the feds have to borrow ALL the lent money for student loans, instead of letting banks fund them.

Oh, wait, he didn't tell you that, did he? Nope.

So, we're going to tax oil and gas another thirty BILLION dollars? And thirty billion dollars will fund a "green economy"? What crack is he smoking?

Ending 30 billion in tax breaks WILL NOT BRING IN 30 BILLION IN CASH. That's the first thing you have to know, and then, realize that even if it did, the deficit for this year is likely to be TWO TRILLION DOLLARS, especially if this useless "stimulus" is recognized for what it's worth, and Congress goes back and tries yet another trillion dollar round of pork barrell waste.

Thirty billion isn't going to fund a damn thing, much less restructure our economy into an inefficient and wasteful "green" vision.

But, people believe it, because they aren't paying attention, apparently.

Every one of these industries is addressed in the stimulus package with both shot term job creation and long term economic benefits.

If its the legilsators that are killing off the auto industry why did the auto industry have to run to the legislators to be saved or go out of business? That's just plain dumb.

I really have to laugh at your ignorance here. First because someone who thinks he knows something about the economy and economics doesn't know that the price of oil is a little over $40 a barrel and natural gas is down to about $3.50 per thousand qubic feet and drilling operations are shutting down from coast to coast. The drilling industry has stacked several hundred rigs in just the past six months and several hundred more will follow and they ain't going to drill much of anything in the foreseeable future.

Second because you actually believe that oil shale which is locked in rocks and has to undergo several expensive processes before the oil can be extracted is a viable alternative for oil. They've been talking about and experimenting with extracting oil from oil shale since at least the 1960's and haven't found an economical way to do it yet and that was when oil was at $147 per barrel.

And third and most importantly because you haven't figured out that oil is dead and to continue to rely on it is our doom. We knew that 40 years ago after the world passed peak production. Its plumb assed stupid to try and continue with oil and that's why Obama is finally taking the only reasonable and logical step of developing new energy sources. Which is something we could have done and should have done 40 years ago and we wouldn't be in this mess now.

Finally you're bullshitting when you try and claim these oil reserves in Utah, Colorado, Montana and North Dakota were made "off limits" to drilling by the Obama administration. They're still drilling in both North Dakota and Montana and all Ken Salazar did in Utah and Colorado was cancel some sweet heart deal leases Bush slipped to his friends in the final days of his administration.

No one has said there can't be any drilling there. They've just said it needs to be looked at first instead of allowing this cronyism to go through.

But there are people foolish enough to believe that the US still has oil. Here's the real deal. If we opened up all the off shore drilling and ANWAR, and they started drilling today, there would not be any significant amounts of oil produced for at least eight years and if that's the only oil we used at our current rate of consumption it would not last three years.

Did you know our health care system is collapsing, strangling small business and countries that have universal health care have both better health care for all citizens and stronger economies.

But the only real solution is to go to universal health care paid for out of our taxes just like nations in the EU do which provides them with both better health care and a better economy.

What banks? The ones we're already bailing out? The Ones that are already failing. The ones that may actually have to be nationalized due to their own greed, corruption, and mismanagement? You mean those banks that had already dug their own graves under the Bush mis-administration?

Everything Obama wants to spend on the stimulus package and budget is a net loss but all the waste he wants to cut out of the budget is a net loss too. Now that is some fancy figuring there.

Rather than my taking the time to refute this point by point, why don't you just reprint it a year or two hence and we'll critique it then. Is it a date? I think it would be much more fruitful to talk about what Obama DID accomplish rather than what you THINK he will accomplish.
