I do agree, and I apologize if I came off as standoffish. I am just tired of the arguments on the GD, and I did not want to see them migrate over to the stories for a matter which may have a simple resolution anyway. It irritates me when people come up with numerous ideas (e.g. bumping the thread to keep it high up, putting the link in sigs) and ignore them, and ignore the possibility of contacting the admin (As I have already, in the process of about 5 minutes) in favour of seemingly taking the mods choice as an act of malice and lashing out at them for it.

I don't really have a dog in this race, just sharing my opinion as an occasional observer of this portion of the site.

I tend to ignore the stickies as it seems to me they rarely contain posts of significance.

If this particular thread is of merit, or any thread for that matter is active it will continually find its way to the top of the list (just below the stickies, which is where I first glance when opening a section of the forum).

Rather than constantly bumping a thread just for the sake of placing it in the forefront why now make a positive contribution. For example; "I just read ______ and found it enjoyable...." If it is self promotion you seek then have at it. Either way the readers will find the stories that most appeal to them stickied or not.

Can't agree more. What will new members think if all they see is post after post of Bump...bump...bump. The thread has to live by its merits.

 

This is all so sad. This thread didn't have to be messed with. It was just fine as it was. I think that people see things are doing well, on here, and they just want to stir things up and make it bad.

Why not 'bump' the thread with recommendations. I mean, you've been spouting about how damned important the thread is so perhaps you should prove it.

Don't be silly. I already said there was no malice in my decision to unstick the thread. Nothing, whatsoever about wanting to stir things up because they are going well.

And now, I'll explain in more depth why this thread doesn't need to be a sticky:

1. The recommendations are posted by long-standing members in the main. There are very few 'newbies' making recommendations on stories/authors/etc.
2. The LSM's [should] know how to use the numerous methods to search for the thread if it falls off the first page. You can search for the thread itself; by author; or even by your posts in this forum. You will come across the thread in the results.
3. There has been a lot of opinions posted on the matter, and we're all entitled to our own. In fact, it's good to see the thread at the top of the page because people are posting in it, rather than it just being stuck on the top of the page.
4. Because there is always a number 4

 

That makes perfectly logical sense to me.

But, the LSMs also probably know a good many of the authors on the list, and could find them anyway, right?

So, what about guy's like me? Been here a couple of months. Just really trying to get used to the place. Trying to find good stories to read. I know perhaps a handful whom are on the list.

Too bad this site doesn't really function like a full-fledged website, where there could be some simple navigation to "Hall of Fame" authors. There could have been a thread to discuss adding people, but the actual list would be maintained elsewhere. That way there wouldn't have to be bumps, and, there wouldn't be pressure to have to recommend instead of bump. <shrug>

I have the list. I'm fine. But if there is any objective to try and cultivate new people, and keep them, making it more difficult to find the gems here at this site might be counterproductive.

When I first established this thread, my thought was to share my favorite writers with others who maybe didn't know about them. You know; like newbies.

 

Sorry, my mistake. But I'm not going to restick it.

Every thread is 'lost to newbies' until someone bumps it. Some people (EP excluded in this instance), will bump it 'on topic'. In this case, with a recommendation. Newbies will then see the thread, read through it and either use the links and/or comment as they see fit.

If every thread was stickied so 'newbies could see them', it starts to lose the impact, wouldn't you agree?

Besides which, the best way for anyone to learn how things work, is to try out the features for themselves instead of relying on others to do everything for them.

I have an idea: why not make this thread a "sticky" so that it will help new members find stories that are recommended? That way they won't say, "Oh, there's nothing here," and move on. Why don't you (as a "moderator") do something to HELP us rather than hurt us? If there was no malace, in your intent, why not admit your decision has not been taken well and change it?

 

Because it doesn't matter how well a decision has be taken, what does matter is how well it was made.

Before the thread was started, there was a steady influx of writers who didn't 'give up and go somewhere else because they couldn't find anything of interest'.

Stickying the thread served a purpose, a good one. It brought the thread to people's attention. And now that it is one of the most well-known on the story forum, the LTM's, can still point others in the general direction of... PLUS they can 'bump' it anytime with on-topic (or, as in the case of the past few days, off-topic) posts.

So come on EP, you keep saying how much it's needed, care to actually recommend a writer, instead of complaining?

 

And this decision was made WRONG. YOU just are too full of self-importance to admit it. This is sad for all the good writers who contribute here. This site TAKES our stories and our work but won't give us the slightest request in return. Donb9033 asked that this be a sticky, long ago, and the Moderators considered it and made it one. Now YOU come along and, on a whim, unstick it so that it will fall off the screen or efforts will have to be taken to keep it on... efforts that would not be needed if YOU would just make it a sticky again... as it SHOULD BE.

 

Like a democracy why not have a vote on it.
