No - The drag on your body due to the air in the tunnel would slow you, lessening your kinetic energy to the point you would not make it all the way to the other side. You would then fall back, but again lose energy to drag, and not going out so far on the original side. Eventually the losses due to drag would damp out your motion and you'd remain motionless at the center. Now, if you'd postulated that the tunnel was a vacuum, this wouldn't happen, but the lack of air pressure would kill you almost immediately anyway, so only your remains would make it to the other side.

since the state is: "Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth" if you were to say no then you could be lying or you could be telling the truth but you cant be compelled to say something hell...just say you plead the fifth (if your in a us court)

 

Fair point. I'm not entirely sure about UK law, but I don't think you CAN refuse to be a witness, unless you're the defendant. Incriminating yourself is considered an irrelevance since you're not the one on trial.

 

doesnt matter if you saying something could incriminate you in some way you can refuse to talk, so id just plead the fifth and argue that saying soemthing would incriminate me in something. as for refusing to be a witness you can...then they subpoena you...then id still refuse to swear to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth, especially because i would never swear on a bible

 

Every single particle making up the entire planet generates its own tiny little bit of gravity. However, Newton managed to demonstrate that any large spherical body (a planet qualifies) will behave as if the gravity was being generated entirely from its centre, provided you pretend that the body has a volume of zero.

Obviously, you can't tunnel inside a body of zero volume, so this "behaving as if" breaks down if you dig inside the Earth. In practice, at the centre of the earth gravitational pull would be zero, since there's an equal amount of rock/metal surrounding you in all directions. If you tunnel part-way into the Earth, it will behave as if gravity was being generated by two different bodies; one composed of the bit of the Earth nearer to the centre than you are, and one of the bit that's further away. Once you're far enough down (I would imagine several hundred miles) for the bit that's further away to be a significant percentage, gravity would be noticeably weaker.


This is of course all theoretical. It's flatly impossible to dig down several hundred miles, let alone to the centre, since the pressure of the surrounding material would instantly crush flat any such space that was created.

 

I know that'd work in the States, but I don't think it does over here. I don't think you have a choice; you MUST be a witness, you MUST take the oath (although a Bible is optional) and you MUST answer all the questions.

In UK law, you'd be questioned as a 'hostile witness' - ie, one who has information but is reluctant to speak out in court.

If the witness is afraid of incriminating themselves, then they would have been advised to seek their own legal council, and had their crimes 'taken into consideration' before taking the stand. That way, if they were committing an illegal and unlawful act along with the accused and that is how they know so much about the crime etc, they will may not be charged, depending on their involvement.

Of course, murder and being an accessory to, before or after the fact will generally nullify any considerations - unless one makes a deal to plead down their guilty plea.
