If you've been through rehab, you know the answer - get your ass to the nearest AA meeting and start doing the program. I've been sober for 2 years after 30+ years out there as an active alcoholic. AA works. Period.

 

So some dumb Americans think being Scotch-Irish makes the likelyhood of you being a drunk significantly higher? I think you should punch their lights out!...

my advice to you is try herione. it's not as easy to acquire as alcohol, and you could die from an infected needle. so then all your problems would have taken care of themselves. just saying.

You cannot turn a pickle back into a cucumber, once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. The difference is one person can be "Active" and a `recovering/recovered' alcoholic is productive, and likely more fun to be around.

It takes one to know one, I am near 7 years without the demon brew!

 

The best advice that I took from AA that I will never forget is this:

"I am able to say no to the first drink."

Time and time again I proved that I was unable to say not the the third, fifth, tenth or twentieth. But if I never have the first, I don't have to worry about the others.

 

Ditch the Italian wine, switch to Communion wine. Those holy alcohol units dont count -hic-

 

I`m Nine Years and Four months sober in AA. It really does work if you work it!
I tried every other way to stop drinking and AA is the only thing that ever helped at all.

My mom was an alcoholic until I was 17 and it definitely affected me. Big surprise I married (and divorced ) 2 addicts, the second one being a huge asshole and alcoholic. So don't think your son isn't paying attention, because he is. Alcoholism is a selfish addiction and if you continue it will steal all of you from your child. That being said, I'm glad you realize you need to quit, but that's not enough. Every time my mom got bombed she'd cry and say she needed to quit , blah, blah, blah. The next day she'd be drinking again, and believe me it got old and I grew cynical.
She finally went to AA and has now been sober for 22 years. She's a much better person and she completely regrets how she was during my childhood. Don't wait until your son's childhood is gone. QUIT NOW! AA, Therapy, whatever it takes, kick yourself in the ass and do it!

I'm not going to argue with any of yoor research, I'm sure it's all correct, and the experiment was carefully run. I can understand that a non-spritual program could be successful. What bothers me about it is that the subjects afterwards continued their substance abuse, just at a reduced rate. That tells me these people didn't recover. From my own experience inside AA, I can tell you that alcoholism never gets better, and if you start abusing at all after treatment, you'll continue the downward spiral. Serious alcoholics either find a way to quit entirely, or continue getting worse. I will tell you one serious advantage to AA - it's free. Lots of serious alcoholics are jobless, homeless, or both, and in most parts of this country would never get the kind of psychiatric treatment this suggests.
