Nobody teaches you how to think first of all, you should know how to think yourself to begin with. If by the time you get to college you don't know how to think or reason, then you're pretty sorry. Infact, you won't even get into a good university if you can't think or reason. And you still haven't proven exactly how having high grades takes the ability to reason and think for yourself.

Because I've studied at one of the top universities in the UK, that's how. That's how I know. I've had the experience, you have not. Bottom line. I've been there, you haven't. I can just talk from personal experience. Back in school, if you learned everything and could answer all the knowledge questions, you got a B. An A was only possible if you used your ability to reason and think. They called it transfer questions.
Yet during my time in the U.S., the exams honestly were a joke compared to what I was used to. I got an A+ without even studying at all.

Did you ever think that maybe people do bad in academics because of being distracted or not nurtured the same way people who get to go off to those top schools you mentioned do? I'm sure somebody who can understand how an engine works just by looking at it can't reason, or somebody who can build something with their hands without anything but their own inspiration, or somebody who has to pick apart a defense that you probably couldn't understand, in a matter of seconds, that person can't reason too right? Oh, and by the way, intelligence is about your understanding something and ability to either put that understanding to action, or explain something in your own words. When it comes to academics in the US at least, the only time you get to think for yourself is when writing essays, and even them you aren't required to as long as you're smart about it. But to the original point, when you take the SAT essay or fill out a college essay, you better be able to think and reason for yourself. No college is going to teach you how to think. They might open your mind a little bit(though that requires your own personal growth), or teach you things you might not have known or seen a certain way before, but they sure as hell aren't showing you how to think and reason.

So shut the fuck up about what you don't know.

Well. In biology, we had to explain a mutation of a plant and the effects, using our knowledge in genetics, photosynthesis and pretty much everything else we had in the last 2 years.

And not really. Kids with better grades have better chances of studying/learning things more often than not. A lot of times, kids don't let themselves do anything, it's out of their control. Like, if a teacher doesn't like you, or has a problem with you, they'll make your stay in their class a living hell for whatever reason. Or maybe you've got a lot of problems at school, and when you get home, you don't have a quiet place to read/do work. Or there's also the kids who have to work and help out their mom and dad/family and don't have the same opportunities. It's not always so black and white.

Edit: But that question doesn't really require you to think or reason, just to study enough and retain enough info, which was pretty much my point exactly. We had questions like that too on every test, though the actual essay questions were more only in English and History.

My example of a question that you have to be able to think and reason for would be something like the ones we have in the better Community College classes(you know, the place where you never have to think and reason apparently?). Where you have to give a solution to a complex problem that you can't look up in a book or anywhere else.

I am enrolled at Glasgow University. I have studied one year of Philosphy and Mathematics, and two years of Mechanical Engineering. I was browsed this forum before I went to this univerisity.

I was accepted without interview. I was the ONLY person in the Highlands of Scotland to hold an Advanced Higher in Applied Mathematics, widely regarded as the most difficult Advanced Higher it's possible to do. I completed an open University Philosphy degree on the philosophy of the mind in my gap year, through self-supervised study. My essays on it were marked as exceptional.

I'm pretty good with chopsticks, I learned to use them when I was really young. Try picking up a jello cube with chopsticks its almost impossible, but that is how I learned now I can use them all the time.
