Spending increases for middle class entitlements are popular. Spending increases for the military are popular. Tax cuts are also popular. The fact that the American people want spending programs they do not want to pay for says bad things about the moral fabric of the American people and is something that ought to concern a conservative. Nevertheless, since the campaign of 1980 the GOP has been most guilty for encouraging this irresponsibility.

In his On the Revolution in France, Edmund Burke wrote, "Society is indeed a contract...it become a partnership not only between those who are living, but between those who are living, those who are dead, and those who are to be born."

Burke would be appalled to learn that in the United States the conservative party encourages Americans to live off of past achievements, and to live as though tomorrow is not there.

Correct. There's a reason the word "entitlement" is used for social programs. They don't become permanent because they work, they become permanent because those who receive them come to feel entitled to them. Once that happens, no politician wants to take them away for fear of their re-election. Try a simple experiment - you got kids? Double each one's allowance for a month, citing economic downturn. At the end of the month, announce that the economy has improved, and their allowance is going back to its original level. Their reaction will not be positive or even understanding, because they've come to feel entitled to the extra.

P.S. The idea that entitlement programs exist only because they work is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen any leftist say.

 

Sorry, prtndr, your comment is pretty stupid. If the entitlement programs did not work, the voters would not care if they were entitled to them or not. Most Americans expect the government to help them get through life. It is just exactly that simple. Republican politicians can pretend otherwise when they give speeches, but they have to understand that when they vote on legislation, or they will have to go back to daddy's law firm, or start selling life insurance again.
