I think Ricky is allowed to have a point of view and express it in his art. After all, how many films have been made that assume a literal god? SO one has been made that assumes literally no god? Still the minority, but at last someone has given it a go.

As to you being an idiot it is very patent that you are, there are several villages round here requesting you take up the obvious position that you fit.

 

Its not so much that they assume no God, so much as they establish a world without lies, then have him do a bad job of satirizing Judeo-Christian beliefs in an effort to shag a girl. Sort of an inverse Liar Liar without the benefits of A) Jim Carey, B) a sense of humor and C) a sense of satire. Really, its the utter lack of subtlety that offends me. If you're going to be so damned heavy handed, why not just skip the bullshit and make a documentary?

You know someone pointed out to me recently that in spite of their notoriety, the Inquisition had a body count of around 5,000 and that was pushing it. Including the various Crusades and such the grand total is probably in the several millions of a period of about 2,000 years. The combined casualties of the USSR and Communist China, both professed Atheist nations, are well past 50 million, probably more, and that's just in the past 70 years or so. Religion has the head start, but it looks like Atheism is doing all it can to close the breach, so good job guys!

On a serious note, are you actually blaming the death toll from Communist, dictatorial regimes on the lack of religion and religious belief?

Also remember the Holocaust, which was basically a religious war against the Jews by Hitler, so add another 16 million or so to that figure. Oh and you also have to take into consideration all the other religious wars carried out by faiths other than Christianity against other religions that were different. This would include Aztec, Maya, Inca, Greek, Roman, Norse, Anglo-Saxon, Egyptian, Huns, Goths, Germanics, ancient Chinese and Japanese, Mongolian, various tribal wars between Native Americans as well as Native Africans, etc. Using those figures correctly will probably put religious wars well ahead of any "atheistic" wars or genocides.

Is cinema not supposed to be a release from real life..the intellegent majority are able to differentiate from such fiction and reality and draw our own conclusions, just as we would if we were viewing a Damian Hurst or a Rembrant...the viewer is paramount and will take what one wishes from each individual work of art!

I've not seen the film (and probably won't. He's a talent, Gervais, but not my cup of tea) but I did hear an interview with him and I think he had a great starting point for this film.

If everyone inthe world was incapable of creative thought (ie. thinking anything that wasn't already literally true and factual) then no art, no literature, no movies, no technological leaps, no scientific achievements, no religion, no flattery, no seduction, no FUN!

Lying and creativity are actually really closely linked, I guess. It's a really interestig idea to play with.

 

Sounds pretty funny to me. The notion of creating an entire religion just in an attempt to get laid is a good joke.

Not as big a joke as the actual, real-life religions we have, but still, a good joke. It's a shame the film itself is rubbish, because it was based on a terrific premiss.

Life of Brian did not postulate any non-existence of God, nor was it blasphemous; that still didn't stop the foaming loonies of its time from trying to ban it.

The Python team admitted, years later, that they'd set out with the intent of satirizing Jesus but found it impossible to do, so instead they made a film about someone who wasn't the Messiah and didn't want to be, but everyone kept insisting he was.

 

Actually, the point was that organizations claiming to be explicitly atheist can be and provably are just as homicidal as any organized faith can be. It seems kind of hypocritical to me that religion's opponents can point to all the violence done in the name of religion while conveniently ignoring all the violence caused by other causes, from politics to sex to race, right down to and including their own. There never was any justification for the persecution of religions and their adherents under Communism, just as there still isn't any justification for China's actions today, especially considering the world in general has been becoming progressively more and more tolerant.

Would a more faith oriented leadership have prevented those atrocities? Probably not, I'll grant you that. A mad, violent grab for power is a mad, violent grab for power no matter what they excuse. But at the same time, neither would a more faith oriented leadership have been more likely to cause such atrocities.

 

In communism, the State is the supreme authority. Religion diverts people's loyalty away and to some other entity. It's competition.

But please explain what it is about atheism that makes one more likely to murder or commit genocide.
