Hey guys--

I'm not even sure if this is the right part of the forum but I have a question I would like some answers to. I would just like to know what religious background you guys are from. Personally I am a Catholic--but I love to look at porn and masturbate. The Catholic religion considers this stuff evil, but I really dont see it that way. I still feel very guilty. I want to be a good religious person but I want to get my rocks off too, lol. Can anybody help me?? Is anybody in the same boat as I'm in?

I definitely grew up in a very religous household and I still go to church every weekend and still have a deep belief in God and everything in The Bible.
However, I do masturbate a lot and watch porn and have pre-marital sex (only with my bf who I love with all my heart.. I'm not a slut! haha)
I feel like it's what's in your heart that matters, not necessarily your actions.
For example, if someone is a great member of the church, always helping out and being a model citizen, but in the end, he still holds deep hatred for someone in his heart or he still fantasizes about other women besides his wife, then he's going to hell for what's in his heart, not for what he's done "good" so far. Do you see?
That's how I see it. Now, I don't take this as a loophole to do whatever I want. I still take God into consideration with everything I do. But I don't think that masturbation or pornography is wrong. As long as it doesn't become more important than God in our lives.
In the bible, there IS a story about Onan, a man who "pulled out" and masturbated to orgasm and they say he was killed because he masturbated. But I don't think that's true, I think he was killed because he didn't follow God's word and impregnant that woman. There are different points of views.
Finally, I think that what's in The Bible is a list of 'guidelines' for a good, healthy life. In the end it's our decision what's healthy for us, but of course, God knows best. So take it or leave it what he has advised.

I'm not religious. I have more of an existential look on life. Ya know? I believe the only absolute truth in life is death.

I have been struggling with faith for the past couple of year. I don't really know what I believe. Only what i wish I could believe.

 

From a Catholic to a Catholic:

As Catholics we are taught that all of us carry Original Sin, from the fall of Adam and Eve, so sinning is a part of us that none of us can escape or defeat. As Catholics are only responisiblity is to accept Christ's Passion on the cross as the price paid for our salvation. From there give glory to God for His grace, and focus on peace in our lives.
Live your life, enjoy it, experience it. Sinning and forgiveness are our the very fibers of our lives.

 

I was raised in what I believe was a Christian family but I'm a highly logical person and decided I'm agnostic....so I agree with it's all about what's in your heart....If i was even remotely religious that's what I would go with lol

 

Religion is only there to give people hope and something to believe. I am Roman catholics but I do not think of myself as being religious. I just try to be nice to everyone and hope that the same will come back to me. My religion is my believes and it has nothing to do with something I can't see.

 

I'm not terribly religious (but have an incredibly strong personal faith) but I grew up 'catholic'. Frankly... I think the whole don't masturbate, don't look at others having sex thing is stupid, it has little to do with a true faith and is just a silly rule, as long as you don't let it consume you (like ANY other thing you might do, drink, play video games, gamble, etc), I don't think it's a big deal.

My mom even had a big problem with the church's view on masturbation and such, which I give her credit for getting across to me at a young age. I wouldn't feel guilty about it, life is far too short and there are far more important things to worry about than whether or not masturbating is 'evil', it's not. Murder, rape, manipulation, greed, those are evil, having fun with yourself seems pretty harmless to me (as long as you don't let it get in the way of real relationships or get addicted to porn or anything).

 

I can understand having a strong faith, and guilt following that...

The truth is I don't think anybody can tell you its okay and remove your guilt. It's your decision what you want to believe is "right" or "wrong", and what to feel guilty about.

I was raised christian, but have been atheist since adolescence. With that, I feel I don't really have the right to tell you what "god" thinks. Especially considering I feel zero guilt masturbating.

However, before i became an atheist, I figured that any god that didn't want us to enjoy our bodies on our own (and with others) would never have given us the pleasure that comes with orgasms anyway. I think it is only religious extremists that believe that masturbation (with or without a little bit of visual aid) means god will condemn you to hell. Even if that IS your belief system, religion, in my experience, has always been about forgiveness, so I wouldn't fret too much about it...

Again, nobody can tell you how to feel about it. It's your of choice what to believe and what to feel guilty about. Hopefully you won't be too hard on yourself.

I don't bother with religion. I know what I believe and what I don't, I don't need someone to tell me what to believe, and how to behave. I live my own life my way.

 

God was invented by men as a means of scaring other men into doing what they wanted them to do (read CONTROLLING) People have to have something to believe in, and the fairy tale of eternal life after death gives them HOPE. I really wish I could believe in (a) God, but if there is a God, He/She forgot about this world a long time ago.

As far as OPs post...Just do what you want sexually, and then go to confession! Same goes to all other "Christians"...if you truly believe, just do what you want and then ask "God" for frogiveness. The best selling fictional fairy tale book (the Bible) says that He will forgive you! Simple really.

 

Afterwhat some priests have been getting away with over the years, I wouldn't worry too much.

Regarding you, OP, you poor misguided youth. I don't really care one way or the other what your faith is or what guilt your struggling with. I just wanted to comment on how interesting it is, the lengths that Christians will go through to rationalize away their "sinful" behavior. As if god, if there is such a thing, could be fooled by your little work-arounds, supplications and back-door dealings that you make with your conscience. It's really very... amusing. You really think you can accept only part of the bible but not the other? I mean if you believe god is god and he says what he means and means what he says, you honestly think you're going to get in to heaven ignoring half the book you build your faith on? Don't get me wrong, I don't think there is a heaven or a hell, I just like watching you twist yourself in to mental pretzels trying to find the loop holes. Even if you do have to invent them out of nothing.
