You cannot compare an athlete with a soldier. Athletes are trained for the one discipline, unless they are decathletes. Where a soldier may one day have to cover 30 miles over broken terrain maybe having to scale walls fences ditches, at speed carrying with him his food, water, and equipment. Once there he may have to advance to contact in short sprints. Also there are no time outs on a battlefield, if your knees hurt you fight with the pain, all pro athletes will leave the field of play to protect their bodies so they can keep earning money at a future date. Soldiers can't all they have is painkillers to ease the discomfort and a difficult job to do which is never understood by people like you.
So till you have done a stint in uniform try to think about what it is a soldier does, all the things an athlete does, maybe not as well but his range of activities will leave most athletes crying on the bench.
