I'm in college and have been taking some adolescent development classes. And in the books, they state that during adolsecent times, men tend to avoid women that are intelligent because they are intimidated by this. My question is this: is it still an intimidating factor when looking for women past adolescence? Do men still try to avoid the women that are obviously intelligent? Or is it a desirable trait that guys like?

 

I think it depends on the man. I am a university student and I find intelligent women very attractive. I find it unattractive if a girl cannot hold an intelligent conversation with me.

 

Intelligence is highly attractive...and one of the most arousing characteristics a woman can have!

 

One can be intelligent and not use that intelligence as a bludgeon to intimidate other people. Most girls learn early on that they have to keep their intelligence within certain boundaries if they want to have much of a social life. As they get older, it doesn't matter as much, because guys are less insecure.

Smart girls are desirable, in a variety of ways, from inventiveness to the pleasure of enjoying her company even when not fucking.

 

Its a very important factor, I would never be interested in someone long term if they were not intelligent.

 

I've always loved intelligence... Well.. maybe it's just I really liked the librarian/nerdy sort of look... but I've always loved it. I've only ever been intimidated by another intelligence when it's been shoved in my face that they were smarter, or they give you that look like you're a moron....

 

I like an intelligent woman. I do not, however, like a woman who wields her intelligence as a weapon or a defense mechanism.

e.g.

Me: Hi. I saw you sitting alone over here and I was wondering if you would like some company.

Her: So you judged me based upon a superficial glance, automatically assuming that I was starved for attention and therefore in need of your pity? Or perhaps you just think I'm pretty and have no interest at all in my mind. If I had been ugly, would you have approached me at all? Huh? Well let me tell you, I have a PhD in astrophysics. What could a man like you possibly offer me?

Me: Bitch. (Walks away)

Her: All men are the same.

Okay, that's an exaggeration, but when a woman starts quoting from Thoreau or Pythagoras because she feels the need to drive home the fact that she's not just a pretty face, that immediately turns me off.

That doesn't mean I go for the dumb blonde; looks only go so far. I'd pick a nice, friendly girl over a bombshell or a brainiac any day.

 

Intelligence: is it attractive or no?

Impossible to generalise on this. I do feel however that no matter how intelligent a person is, they can never fake a good personality.

 

Ha, your books are wrong in my case, I've always been incredibly attracted to intelligent women, intelligence is sexy and a great personality is very important as well.

 

I find really dumb men unattractive. It also leads me to believe they're really immature and I can't deal well with immaturity. I love kids but I don't want one for a bf right? But also yea I don't want a smart ass who is always throwing that in my face. Just someone who I know I can have a conversation with and then joke around with...and of course have hot, angry sex against a wall every now and then :excited:

 

I agree....I don't insist that a man be a rocket scientist. He just can't be egregiously stupid, to the extent that it's really noticeable. Like the guy who thinks the London Underground is a political movement.

Interesting - this fits with the way that many adolescent male schoolkids here in the UK seem to reject other males who try to work on their school subjects. Even to the extent of bullying. There seems to be lots of peer pressure not to study rigorously and not to do well in school. Perhaps this fits in with rejecting intelligent females at that age range, too.

In later life I wouldn't be surprised if good long term relationships are more often built by pairs with similar intelligence than by pairs with very different intelligence. I'm assuming that academic qualifications are not necessarily related to intelligence.

 

Some girls just think they're smarter than they are to the point they act bitchy. That's a turnoff.

 

It depends how you say it!

Any girl will be bitchy if you point our that they are not as smart as they think in the company of others. I once I had a student who gave a lousy lecture in a great outfit, I told her, privately, that it was a shame her data stank because according to the enquiries I got from all the "brains in their dicks" she could have had her choice of locations.

I think she ended up at the University of Hawaii.
