So when are you going to stop fronting or grow up son?

 

I'm grown, and have been for awhile now.

 

If you work in construction, I think your still in touch with reality. Nothing to worry about. Nothing wrong with growing up privileged, it's what I hope to leave for my kids.

 

If you work hard enough to privelege your kids then I'd think you have the sense enough to raise them into knowing how to act and what kind of people to be- not saying you don't by any means its not a bash at you, just a statement on having priveleged kids- I think we all want our kids to be well off, but just being well off isn't enough without them knowing what kind of people to be.

 

It's been said but yea there's nothing wrong with having money but being a brat about it is irritating. I'm tired of hearing about pampered little rich kids complaining when they're porsche or whatever is taken away and they have to drive like a chevy or something...yea Idk much about cars lol.

Well my family is like upper middle class, sometimes money is tight but usually we're fine..and I can't really want do anything for myself. I can't cook. I hate cleaning. Don't like the idea of working....so it's not just rich kids

On a serious note, I don't get it, though. I lve on my own, right? I've been doing my own shit for myself ever since. I'm not fortunate enough to have a maid.

So ... if I may ask without being personal (you see where THAT kinda shit is getting us?) How do you expect to get by when you can't cook? When you've not got a job?

Understand, I don't mean this to be a personal attack upon you, I'm merely just curious.

 

I agree with some others that the problem does not lie in growing up affluent. It lies in growing up without values, without motivation, without ambition, and without compassion for others who are less fortunate.

My husband and I are relatively affluent, and we've had long discussions about what that means for our children's growth and development. We're both determined that they not grow up thinking that everything will be provided to them, and that they will not have to work and make their own way in the world. We will make sure they can go to college and get a good education, provided that they apply themselves. But that's where the largesse will end. They will grow up knowing that they have to make a living, on their own.

Talk is cheap, and time will tell if we're able to stick to our guns. But we don't think you do children a favor by subsidizing them for their entire lives.

Don't start this shit in another fucking thread, I'm sick of reading all these damn threads where after page 1 it turns into you guys setting baller up onto his soapbox and he not even realizing hes walked RIGHT into it.
I'm just quite sick of seein the shit, I know its fun to pick at the guy with a short temper issue that gets WAY more riled up than he should, but I'm just sick of reading about it and I'm sure more people can back me on that.

 

Not a thing wrong with being born into money,infact its not their fault his it.
in saying that , i wasn't that lucky i had to work hard for what i have now. i can now say that i'm well off now due to hard work.

One of the hardest things to do is to execute tough love. We helped our kids when they truly needed it and then kicked them in the ass (metamorphically) to get to school and learn how to live in the world.

Now the three survivors are doing well.

 

I'm glad, tenguy. I've seen more than my share of failure-to-launch kids, and I'd feel terribly guilty if I ever bore the responsibility for creating another one.

 

But it still is really out of your hands when they begin to venture out of the nest. I'm pretty sure you know I lost my oldest daughter to drug abuse, I still question myself on that.

 

I grew up in the Northeast and I have seen "privileged" people; the ones who have money in the family for several generations and are relatively low-key, drive a 7 year old beat up car, don't dress flashy or trendy and they're absolutely loaded. Average people you'd never know were loaded if you saw them in line in the grocery store. Polite, not snobby, friendly and caring. Everyday kind of people.

Then there's the nouveau riche, ever-so-eager to flash their Rolex, Jaguar or Lexus and make sure you see the label they're wearing, etc. Boors, all of them. Shallow and boring. Pathetic really......

Best thing my parents ever did was make my sisters and I work if we wanted things; I can assure you I learned the value of a dollar quite young. And let me tell you, most of my peers are not on the same page, sadly. My old High School classmates are still living at home and bumming rides to the mall.

The movement in this country as of late is to vilify those with money and those who flaunt it. For those who may be "well off" as the saying goes, the key is to be discreet and stealthy. Hopefully we won't see any returns to the "gotta have it all" excess of the late 90's and early-to-mid 2000's.

What is the point of having lots of money if you don't gad about and lord it over everyone? If and when I win BIIIIG on the lotto - I'm soo taking out a full page ad in some tacky Sunday tabloid to let everyone know!! And THEN I'm going to sit back and tear up all the begging letters!!

I don't take it as an attack I'm aware that I do seem kind of helpless. I know eventually I'll have to take care of myself. But I'm only 18 and until I'm out of college there are plenty of people in my family willing to take care of me :excited:. And my mother can't cook that well either I would never want lessons from her lol.

I think it's an inevitable feature of parenting that we blame ourselves...or at least question ourselves. It just goes with the territory. But at some point, you have to accept the fact that you did your best, and be at peace.
