Nannies,boarding school,just how much contact did they have with a family unit.

Times are tough and there are people that are destitute. I do what I can to help.

A couple things to think about

How do you think they managed that? To make that last for several generations the parents had to be teaching some money managemnt skills. And probably better skills than most of the rest of us have. Otherwise we'd all be as rich as they are.

As someone else already said, It's becomming popular to vilify the rich because they have a lot. The popular theme in Washington right now is to tax the hell out of them to give it to the poor. They are forgetting a few key things here.

First of all, unless you are rich you work for someone who is. If they get their taxes raised the people who really suffer are the people they have to lay off to pay the taxes.

Second, if you look up the Forbes list of the richest people in the world. Almost all of them are first generation, self made millionaires. That means they got that way by their own hard work and effort. They weren't born into privelege.

Third, if you just take the money from the people who are working hard to to give it to the poor you really aren't fixing anything. In the end they are still going to be poor because the thing they aren't being given is the ambition and the work ethic along with the money.

Before someone jumps all over me for not having a clue, yes I do. I grew up living in a neighborhood where I had to fight my way home from school every day. Instant mashed potatoes was a complete meal. I never had more than one pair of shoes at a time and never more than one pair a year. When the gangs moved in across the street and we had drive by shootings every night it was time for me to kmake some desparate changes. I went back to school got an education, a career, and got the hell out of there. Now, I live in one of the best areas of town. Are my kids priveledged and should we be resented for what we have?

 

Many people believe that because you are well off you get whatever you want. Now I can't say this isn't true, however, to a certain extent. I for example have never gone to bed hungry, never been cold, and never had old clothes each year for school, and we have taken a family vacation since I was 4.

However, if I asked for a 100 dollars my dad would laugh at me, and he should. If I asked for a new car with everything, he would tell me to keep dreaming. I live a great life, but somehow I remain grounded and that to me is more important. I have chosen to go into a profession that most likely I will never live in the socioeconomic class of my parents, and I am okay with that because I will be helping people. I know money doesn't buy happiness nor do I believe things make me happy. I could care less if I get anything for Christmas and would rather it go to a charity, staying true to myself and grounded is what matters

 

Good for you, sweetie....I'm confident that you'll find that to be a more rewarding and fulfilling path than relying on your parents' largesse.

 

Though many people still believe in the American Dream, working hard will gain to success in the the US. It is becoming harder to do so and less likely that people in the ghetto, projects or state housing will be successful and able to leave those areas. The men and women that do leave are the role models that more people need. Study, stay away from drugs / gangs, don't get in-trouble, play a sport / activity and you will go onto college. However, school alone is a challenge especially if one is a minority, also it depends on the role models this children have, the jobs the parents / siblings have and their ability to be optimistic

 

Upper Middle Class - May classify you as rich to some people and to others not. I guess it depends on what "rich" means and depending on if you ask someone at the poverty line which is 20,050 for a family of 4 the upper middle class is rich. But if you ask that 1% who are the top of our economy they may say your poor

As for being an upper middle class young adult and not knowing how to cook, you hate to clean and don't like the idea of working - I'd call you lazy. I live in the top 1% and I can clean, cook, and love to work. I am not lazy and do not believe in hand outs. I live on my own at college and do all the normal things that come with owning a house on my own. Being lazy is an excuse not a reason as to why you don't know or want to do these things
