Actually, it's been described to me as a compulsion. They can hold it in and stop it, but it's like a volcano building inside of them. So many of the tics could be considered "voluntary".

I was just pointing out that you don't have to get angry about everything. I also have spent my life dealing with mental illness, not only Tourettes. My brothers have a wide range of issues and I spent a large part of my childhood raising them and dealing with it. I also have studied not only Tourettes, but other diseases as I work with children and have come across many different types of disorders including autism, OCD, Down's syndrome, bi-polar disorder, and don't even get me started on ADHD. So I do feel like I speak from years of experience. Yes it can be painful. Yes life can suck sometimes. Yes there are jerks who will make fun at someone's expense (and I had to defend my brothers many times). The thing that makes life a little less painful is the ability to laugh at the absurdity of our situation.

I don't think suze was trying to belittle people with Tourettes. She was just pointing out that this particular guy had some hilarious tics. He seems ok with it, so why should you be so offended. Not everyone is out to get you.

Honestly I don't even remember. I took a bunch of tests when I was about 6 or 7 and got diagnosed, and was on medicine for it and ADHD(all different kinds) until I finally just decided I was done with it when I was 15 or 16, and haven't needed it since I stopped taking it. It almost completely went away, so much so that piece of shit kids who thought Tourettes was the cursing disease never believed me, especially since nobody only a handful of people from my gradeschool went to my high school. Yes I had to come out of school at lunch for a few years, though I had more problems than just Tourettes and ADHD as a kid. I went through a lot of shit because of my Tourettes and even got checked in a game of floor hockey in gradeschool gym because apparently I was making a face at some kid and he thought it was intentional. I got through it though, and haven't spoken about Tourettes since then except to counter this insulting bullshit.

I'm lucky, my tics have always been mild compared to the worst cases. They were just persistent really, and would change a lot, from clearing my throat to blinking my eyes to weird things I had to do to make it feel "right", which is a big part of Tourettes. Some of them are compulsions that can be suppressed, but a lot of them cannot be suppressed at all without medicine or constantly consciously getting rid of any habits you might have because they will become tics. Hell, I still have a few very mild ones, which mainly come out when I'm really tired.

The bullshit in those videos is for Tourettes what blackface is for African Americans. It's a complete mockery, and it's very offensive.

 

So the fact that I have lifelong experience is wrong? Or the fact that now you feel I'm attacking you (which I'm not) is a reason for you to tell me to shut the fuck up. You're not the only person on the forum who is an "authority" on this subjsct. I'm not going to back down just because you yell at me. I'm also not childish enough to get into an insult fest with sone so much younger. You are young, which tends to make a person self-righteous, so I will forgive you that. However, I hope at some point in your life you come down off of you high horse and see that not everyone who diagrees with you is out to get you.
