Is the Emperor holding the same basic office as Obama? YES
Does that make Obama and the Emperor equals? YES

So if they are equal in relationship, then Obama did not have to bow. But because he did bow, the Emperor should have returned the bow.

As I stated above, according to the Japanese etiquette if a person bows before you, then you will return the bow as low as the one received.

You might want to go and learn your Japanese etiquette.

I strive to learn etiquette from around the world, because I had friends from many different countries around the world. I learned so much thanks to my high school days.

I had to learn about if I should bow or do a simple head nod to my friend's parents. And a simple head nod with a hand shake was the appropriate thing.

But tell me how I am wrong please.

I mean seriously, a handshake and a nod of the head like so many other political figures have done in the past with the Emperor was sufficient and correctly following Japanese etiquette. Then why did Obama have to do the whole bow to the Emperor and not the Empress. And why did the Emperor not return the bow back to Obama as the Japanese etiquette states?

 

I'm not an expert on this by no means,,but it seems to me as if this is 2 totally different cultures.

 

Again, Obama and the Emperor are equals, they are both in the highest position politically.

One is President and the other is an Emperor.

So the bow should not have been done.
