Here it's mainly weaponry development. We have entire cities devoted to it. I'd like to see you explain how a company that creates battleships and jet fighters would survive if the government wasn't buying them.
Most of it here is labor. They hire people to work on the bases as skilled labor, developing the weapons (prototypes and what not). They also have people who are skilled in airplane repair etc.

Even so, do you really think that if the government wasn't buying all those MREs the company would have as many employees?

 

Yes, because whether they work for the military or not people have to eat. So the MRE would be replaced by pizzas.

yeah the only thing they dont tell u about the so called unemployment rate decrease is how many people have simply exhausted their benefits. and are no longer counted into the unemployment rate figures. and part of our great american recovery act crap.. 8 billion spent on "high speed trains" because building these trains will create jobs! most of which will be at the factories that make them... not in america

I'd say most of the work would be laying the tracks and building the system. It's kind of like what they did back in the day (updating infrastructure).

Besides, we desperately need a high speed transit system. Maybe now instead of the USSR we'll be competing with China? They just built the worlds fastest high speed train, it goes 224 MPH, I think.

The Soviet Union did not want to conquer Western Europe. Communist China was independent of the Soviet Union, and occasionally had border clashes with the USSR. Communist China continues to threaten Taiwan, but no other country. North Korea continues to threaten South Korea, but no other country. None of these countries posed a credible threat to the United States. As a movement Communism was only a threat to right wing dictatorships in impoverished third world countries. Vietnam was never important to American security, or to the U.S. economy.

The United States greatly overestimated the danger of Communism. The only real danger was of a nuclear war for which the United States may have been primarily responsible.

During the Cuban missile crises John Kennedy threatened the world with nuclear war to prevent the Soviets from achieving nuclear parity. The nuclear missiles they tried to install in Cuba were equivalent to missiles we already had in Turkey. Cuba was an ally of the USSR. The Soviets had every right under international law to put missiles in Cuba. The development of ICBMs soon made the missiles obsolete anyway.

 

During the Great Depression Franklin Roosevelt did not wait for businessmen to get good and ready to start hiring people. After blaming them for the Depression, he raised their taxes, and hired people directly to compete with them. Then he encouraged their employees to join unions. It was great fun. During the great depression, the FED witheld as much money as it could, instead of putting more money on the market... thus strangling the economy even more...

The Soviets were willing and capable of launching a full scale attack on western Europe, would they have won, probably not, but it would have been a hard fight.
Also like the US they support puppet regimes across south and central America, Africa and Asia, fighting their wars by proxy. Were the Soviets dangerous and bent on world domination damn right they were.

The Soviets were capable of launching a full scale attack on Western Europe. We were capable of launching a full scale attack on Eastern Europe. Immediately after the end of the Second World War Gen. George Patton, and other prominent Americans, advocated an invasion of Eastern Europe. Even Bertrand Russell advocated a nuclear first strike.

During the Second World War the Soviet Union lost 30 million dead and one third of its industrial and farm plant. It should have been obvious to Winston Churchill and Harry Truman that a country that had been so devastated was not about to start another war.

 

When the US troops captured Berlin in 1945, Patton wanted to simply continue their mars til the allies reached Moscow, because Patton may have been a bit crazy, but he knew the threat of Jozef Stalin and Stalinism...

But since there had already been preliminary talks at Yalta (Feb. 1945) about the distribution of Europe, he was whistled back by Eisenhower and Roosevelt...
