I don't understand why people are so against me on this, I would of thought with the story area we have here, that I would be at least have some open support. Look at a large part of Europe which supports concent down to around 14-16 in many countries. I don't understand why my opinion is evil.

The reason that law is in place is to protect vulnerable minds. Just because people are physically maturing earlier does not mean they are mentally.

The average brain doesn't stop developing until you are in your early 20s or late teens. And the last part of the brain to develop is the preforntal cortex - where reasoning, and calculating long term implications comes from. Children that young may be able to consent, but they can not understand the consequences. And it could potentially negatively impact their brain development among other things.

Already, 20 European countries have ages of consent lower than l6. The minimum age is effectively l2 in the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Malta. It's 14 in Slovenia, Iceland, Montenegro, Serbia, Italy, San Marino, Albania and, in certain circumstances, Germany. All these laws apply equally to hetero and homo sex.

I think the age of 16 is just fine. I did notice in an age of consent table, Indiana and Iowa are down as legally you can fuck anything from the age of 14...why doesn't this surprise me?!

 

The problem is, people are different. I may have been mature enough at 16 to make decisions like that for myself, but there are others who clearly are not. Society needs to establish boundaries like that, for the protection of kids who may not be capable of protecting themselves from sexual predators. I have no problem with the threshhold being set at age 18.
