From what I know, the UK is age 16. Do you know anything about the female anatomy? Do you have any idea what a pregancy would do to a child? A 12 year old can not make decisions that will affect their lives like that. Stop and fucking think for a minute. Would you trust them to drive a car? Can they handle your banking for you? 'A few thousand years ago' humans only lived about 30 years and the earth had about 1/100th of 1 percent of today's population. The 'rules' were more flexible when the human race could go extinct within a generation if no one under 20 had sex.

Look around. It is not the same world today. Children CAN (and SHOULD)be children for at least 16 years and there are plenty of 30+ year old perverts today (who would not have even been alive thousands of years ago) who would prey on children if not for the law. Many do DESPITE the law.

We now have CIVILIZATION and LAW to punish those who feel they must prey on children.

 

Canada just raised their age of consent from 14 to 16.

Where I live the AOC is 17. I could see dropping it to 16 but 12-13 are you fuckin' crazy?!
When I was 12 (and do to a sexual trauma when I was young, and my general perversion, as well as my old soul; I was mature beyond my years) I didn't really know anything about sex, I had fantasies of basically-impossible beings fucking me— and 13? So I was legally a teenager...didn't do a damn thing to me. Just like when I went from 16 to 17, didn't do anything to me physically or mentally for that matter.
But; from infant-5 is a baby, 6-10 is a child, 11-13 is a preteen,14-16 is a teen and 17+ is an adult. At least to me.

Fuck someone your age OR someone at least 16.

 

+1. The average life span in America is approaching 80 now. People are now maturing slower mentally. This is because of the advancement of society. We no longer have to "grow up" quickly and provide for a family at age 16. Having taken a couple college psychology courses, the stages of cognitive development I feel are important to mention. Basically, someone is not ready for sex until they are mature enough mentally for it. That's a no brainer. I believe one needs to be formal operational before they can have sex. And as both my psychology professors have said, quite a few people don't even truly become formal operational until they are in their mid 20's to early 30's. The mind is a complex yet fragile thing. Sex is something that can only be "responsibly done" (in my words) by someone who is ready for it. Even I can admit that I was not ready for sex when I first started having it. There are those who break the mold and could really be ready for it at a younger age of say fourteen. However that is extremely rare. The age of consent should stay at around 17-18. I believe tests should be administered to see just how far people are into this last stage of development. If one passes the test at age 16(given by a doctor or someone in the psychology field), then I think that they should be allowed that privilege. Below that age is too young for anyone however. Society is a long way off from this system or anything close though. Just my thoughts on the subject. Sorry for the lack of coherence. I just type as I think.

Also, if the age was lowered, they'd have to change other laws as well. I know that where I'm from, you can't even legally work until you're 14. So if all these kids that are still dependent on their parent/guardians income start having their own kids, that just becomes a burden for you and everyone else that would start paying for other people to support their own kids through taxes and federal programs.

Seems silly, really.

I'm not sure I completely agree with this, I would think that part of kids development into adults, or formal operational minds, as you said, would be experiencing a full range of things they are likely to encounter as an adult (I have no knowledge of psych yet, I'm just going by logic here.) I would think that part of that development is learning about relationships, which often involves sex. Many states do indeed make allowances for that (my home state of utah is quite lenient, the statutory rape law states that if you are within three years of age of your partner, consent can be given if one of you is over 18, and I've never heard of a case being formed where both parties are underage. simply put, the kids are allowed to experience and explore with other kids starting at about 15 if they wish, but sexual predation is made unlikely because of the 3 year rule. It's not a perfect system, and a lot of kids that have sex are really not mature enough to start, but you have to learn sometime, neh.
