If you could just be persuaded to take off those star spangled rose tinted glasses and look beyond your shores you would see that football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world. What you have completly missed the point of, is the PASSION it arouses in it's fans, worldwide,... take a look at a match between to rival teams, Liverpool/Everton.. Birmingham/Villa....Celtic/Rangers.....Barcellona/Real Madrid.. you may begin to understand what football means to the rest of the world..

Rugby Union is development of a game played at Rugby School, Rugby.

 

The ball in Rugby is carried by hand though, is it not? Scoring can be achieved by carrying the ball, by hand across the goal line and grounding it, right?

It is a matter of semantics. American football was derived from Rugby, as was Australian rules "football", thus the names were derived from the popular name of Rugby "football".

To argue over which is better is ridiculous, within the respective groups following the sports, who would possibly be objective?

 

The ball is either carried in the hand or kicked forward for territorial gain it cannot be thrown forward.
Scores are achieved by taking the ball over the try line and grounding it. - 5 points.
Converting a try. (the same as extra points in NFL) - 2 points.
A penalty kick. taken from the position of the offence but able to move it backwards towards your own half to obtain a clearer view of the goal. - 3 points
Drop goal a half volley kick putting the ball between the uprights above the crossbar during open pay. - 3 points.
confusing, yeah wait till you try to understand ruck, maul and scrum play.

I don't know that I am trying to find out which sport is better. I am trying to find out which sport people perfer and why. To me the two sports are rather similar, they both require similar attributes: strategy, strength, skill, and agility. Also it is obvious that American football fans are just as rabid ( try standing in a stadium in -23 F with no shirt on and your upper body painted green and gold) as their European conterparts. So how come a sport that is so popular in America has failed to be popular outside our borders?

 

i am born american in the us i have a couple of first place american football trophies. now im not into the sport. i love football on of the first sports i ever play especially when you have a father from mexico who wants you to be a football (soccer) player or boxer. Also, a while back i got sort of into rugby im still figuring the sport out.

Given the stop-start nature of Gridiron compared to Association Football or Rugby Union, I would say that it is a game of tactics not strategy.

Rubgy League of the games cited has more similarities with Gridiron but is still tougher because it is played continuously.
