I have nothing against Muslims individually or collectively. I've only known two Muslims personally, and both were outstanding people.

That said, let me offer a reason why there's so much backlash against Muslims since 9/11. Your initial post is a perfect example of the response from the muslim community. Rarely do they come out and condemn the attacks on 9/11 without accompanying it with a complaint of how America is sticking its nose where it doesn't belong. I know this isn't your intention, but it comes across as, "I don't support terrorists, but you still deserved it."

It's a valid point; I also believe the United States shouldn't be in as many places as it is. But that's a separate issue entirely, and as long as you link that to terrorism, we're going to feel like Muslims condone terrorism.

If the international Islamic community really wants people to stop thinking of Muslims as terrorists, you have to do several things:

1. Come out with some real public denouncements of terrorism without in the same breath complaining about the United States. Do it over and over and over again. Feel free to complain about the U.S. being involved in Muslim countries, but never do it in the same speech.

2. Take some real steps in cleaning up terrorism in Muslim countries. Show us just how serious you are. Right or wrong, terrorism is the face of Islam these days, and it will stay that way until you show us a new face. Show us an anti-terrorism face. Show us a people who do not tolerate terrorism at all, who work hard to purge it from their religion.

If you're already doing both of these, well, you have a PR problem.

 

You make a fair point that juxtaposing the two statements sends the wrong message. It's also true, though, that Americans need to hear both statements, loud and often. Because we're too used to hearing, and believing, that America can do no wrong.

In all my travels I have socially met and worked on building sites with Jews, Palestinians, Jordanians, Iraqiians and Syrians and none of them has as much hatred in them as you have. We have all shared meals together, talked politics, talked about life in our countries. I have spoken to all of them about what they want for the future and all they all want nothing more than peace and to live in harmony.

I was raised to believe in liberal platitudes. My experience in life has taught me that most of them are false. I have never been mugged by a white man.
